For Everything a Reason

The car came to a stop and Anne got out of the car, her heart pounding in her chest. All she had to do was perform a spell for Clara and her mother was free from Hell. However, she still wasn't sure what condition the Queen of Hell was in and what spell she specifically needed. During the last couple of miles, she thought of every spell she knew and hoped it would be good enough.

When Gadreel walked around the car and stood beside her with her bag in his hand, slipping his free arm reassuringly around her, she looked up at him and smiled.

"Ready?" he asked her and she nodded. They both crossed the empty parking lot and entered the bar, ironically named "The Devil's Alley". It sounded like a horrible warning, like she was walking into a trap, like the deal could go terribly wrong. She couldn't think like that.

They turned the doorknob of the door and when they pushed it back, it was just as empty as the parking lot. Apparently, no one was around, except for in the center of the bar, where stood Crowley and a clearly pregnant woman.

It made sense now. That was Clara, Crowley's Queen and she was in pain due to her pregnancy. A Hell pregnancy, it just sounds like pain.

Once they were in, Crowley snapped his fingers and the door slammed behind them, locking. Both Anne and Gadreel couldn't help but feel a little nervous, like trapped mice.

"Brought me a spell, Glinda?" Crowley asked her. She lifted up her chin and when Gadreel handed her the bag, she took it without breaking eye contact. She unzipped it and lifted her Book of Shadows.

"And my mother?" she asked him and he lifted up some papers. "That's it?" she asked and he grinned, then snapped his fingers. At that moment, her mother appeared like a shimmering image and then stood there, like she was really there.

"Anne." She said with hope and a bright smile. Anne smiled at her and felt a tear form in her eyes, then she noticed the handcuffs on her mother and she shot Crowley a glare.

"I'm a demon of my word, so do the voodoo that you do, Dead Girl." Crowley said and Anne narrowed her eyes, pouring as much loathe as she could into her stare. She opened her Book of Shadows and tried to calm her heart as she realized she didn't have any spells relating to pregnancies or infants. Heck, not even children.

So she flipped through the pages trying to find a sort of pain release spell. If she didn't have one, then she'd look for a protection spell or even a blessing spell. Maybe a healing spell, but a pregnancy wasn't a stubborn wound; that would only be Anne's last resort. However, she was certain she had at least one spell that would release one from pain, of course, it was the emotional kind.

But it had to do for physical pain. It just had to.

Then, there were the ingredients. She had some of them, but she was out of luck for the others. Then, an idea hit her. She looked up at Crowley and knew he'd provide.

"I need Healing Oil." She said and maintained her stare as Crowley looked at her as if in disbelief. Like Hell she was going to make the oil by hand. It just required more oils!

"Shouldn't you have that already?" he asked her, not understanding why a Wiccan was lacking key ingredients.

"Do I look the type to carry oils and plant a garden full of herbs?" she asked and the King of Hell only maintained that stare. Then, he snapped his fingers and a vile of liquid appeared on the table next to her and Gadreel.

"And some dried lavender or rosemary." She said and Crowley stared at her as if he was getting annoyed, but he snapped his fingers anyway and it appeared next to the vile. She walked over to the table and began going through her bag.

She took out a white candle, a piece of clear quartz and a safety pin. She looked over her shoulder at Clara and her expression was difficult to read, but she wasn't like Crowley. She walked over gracefully and stood beside Anne, making her feel slightly uncomfortable for some strange reason. Then, Clara smirked, having noticed Anne's expression.

"I have that effect on people." She said and Anne just nodded and returned to her spell.

The candle remained on the table, but Anne picked up the dried lavender and rosemary and scattered it in a circle around the candle. Then, carefully, Anne carved into the candle the words "no more pain" with her safety pin. Once that was done, she anointed the candle with two drops of the oil.

Then, she turned to Clara and took a second to relax, so her energy could encourage Clara to relax. The text didn't say it, but Anne knew it all too well: spells require good energy.

"Clear your mind and focus on how you'll feel when the pain is gone. When you're ready, say 'Candle's flame, burn and carry this pain away' five times." She said and Clara's expression was blank, but she closed her eyes and immediately seemed peaceful. After a few seconds, the spoke the same words exactly five times and even her tone was peaceful.

When she opened her eyes, Anne picked up the quartz and placed it in Clara's hand.

"Now focus on the flame and visualize the pain leaving you, like it's being consumed by the flame." Anne said and Clara stared at the flame and as the seconds passed, her stare was intensifying as if she was trying to make the flame grow into a blow torch. "Now gently hold the quartz against the spot where you always feel pain and charge the stone with your desire to no longer feel that pain. If you wish, you can say the chant again." Anne said and watched as Clara placed the quartz on her stomach and focused again on the flame, saying the chant once more softly.

When Anne could see that the spell had a sort of relaxing ambiance in the whole bar and that it pleased Clara, she blew out the candle. When she met Clara's eyes, she saw a quick flash of something familiar, but couldn't recognize it fast enough.

Clara held out her hand, revealing the crystal and Anne smiled.

"That is yours." She said and Clara gave a soft grin. "Repeat the spell if you have to, but I'll also give you the spell for a pain relief tea you can make if you feel discomfort." She added and ripped a page out of little notebook she had in her bag.

Once she was done, she gave it to Clara and, although she was reading it, Anne explained it.

"Mint leaves, rosemary and peppermint. Brew them with warm water for a few minutes and add some honey for sweetness, brew some more and then it's ready to go." Anne said and Clara met her eyes. Then, she had the chance to recognize the look in her eyes.

It was kind and proud.

"Thank you, Anne." She said softly and walked away with the crystal and returned by Crowley's side. Although Anne was stunned by Clara's softness, she tried her best to look at Crowley with that tough expression once again.

He lifted up the papers again, but with a dark smile. At that moment, Clara took the paper and they began to burn in her hand. Crowley turned to her, eyebrows knitted together, as if stunned and annoyed.

Anne could have screamed. What a heartless bitch! She performed a spell for her and gave her another and this is how she is repaid? Whatever happened to the deal? She watched the papers turn to ash and fall the floor like dark snow from Hell.

Just as she was getting ready to explode with rage, Clara snapped her fingers and the handcuffs on her mother fell to the floor. Anne waited for something else to happen, like her mother being dragged away, but her mother continued to stand there looking as stunned as she felt.

Then, Viviane rushed to Anne and wrapped her arms tightly around her. Anne was thrown into shock and didn't know what to think or say.

And Crowley looked just as stunned. He turned to his Queen, but it was like she was ignoring him, watching Anne and Viviane so intensely. When Anne met her eyes, she smiled and that softness was in her eyes.

"You have a good mother, Anne Cromwell." She said, her voice so smooth that for that moment, Anne forgot that she was looking at the Queen of Hell. "Cherish her." she added and then her and Crowley were gone.

It hit Anne at that moment that Clara had burned the transfer papers and resurrected her mother instead. She wrapped her arms tighter around her mother after that realization and cried a few tears.

She had her mother back.
