Chapter 15: Darkness Be My Friend
"What should we do with her now?" the first man asked.
The second man chuckled and replied "She has deemed herself worthy, perhaps we should let her off this time. We've already seen what she is capable of, besides the contractors we sent after her were just test subjects."
He laughed again, sounding more like a mad scientist.
A split blade smashed into the ground, deflecting the three oncoming darts. The boy sprang back, unable to locate the new attacker.
Hei landed from mid air and put his hand to the ground, bringing the head of the boy crashing down with it. The blue contractor aura highlighted him as his eyes shined red, sending a high voltage electricity through his veins. The life ebbed out of the body and Hei lifted himself straight.
"BK201..." He managed to rasp before he lay, lifeless on the gravel. Hei stared at him for a moment, and then quickly turned his attention to the other figure facing the ground.
"Ying" He said as he knelt down, turning the girl over in his arms. Ying's eyes were closed, a trickle of blood ran from her mouth and down her chin. A gash on the side of her head had painted the left half of her face scarlet. Hei realized that, although he only came in contact with the figure for only a few seconds, his coat was already drenched in blood from the many cuts and bruises that lined her arms and legs. Blood was still seeping from it even though some parts of it were already healed.
"Hei." Ying breathed, her eyes slowly opening. He was taken aback, her eyes were illuminated with red, the orbs inked deep with scarlet. Without warning, Ying held his arm to her face and pushed back the sleeve to reveal a small cut, which still had the final droplets of blood oozing out.
"Ying?..." Hei asked, slightly astounded as she gently licked up the blood.
"Sorry Hei..." She whispered, before falling back into unconsciousness. Hei's arm became unsupported as Ying's hand fell limp to her side, her eyes closing once again.
Hei gathered himself and stood up, holding Ying in his hands. He trudged towards the end of the alleyway, finding to his surprise Huang's van parked there waiting. The window went down, revealing the driver inside.
"Hop in." He instructed shortly.
Hei obeyed and lay Ying's head on his lap as he himself sat down.
"The syndicate wants to tell her that they are letting her off this time. What has she done now?" Huang inquired as he wove his way through the city.
"I don't know." Hei replied, glancing down at the bloody figure. Unconsciously, he raised a hand and stroked her head. Even her elegant black hair had been splattered with blood, making it slightly sticky and uneven. She always seemed like a child, acting so rashly. Or maybe this time it was because of something else. Why was the syndicate obsessed with Ying?
They arrived at Misuzu shortly after midnight ten minutes later.
"Watch out. Don't let anyone see her bloody state." Huang said before trailing off in the other direction.
Hei stared after him and went inside room 201. Once inside, he placed Ying on the bed and started to tend to her wounds. What has she been through? He thought, after taking a look, he found that she had 3 bullet wounds, quite a few deep gashes and bruises up and down. After clearing everything up, he changed her into her black button-ups and a shorts.
After hiding both his and Ying's equipment away, he returned back to her bedroom. He thought about why was Ying acting so strangely? Was it her remuneration? Aside from that, why did the boy who wanted to kill her know her name?
Unable to get an answer, Hei walked towards the still figure, tucking the blankets and himself in beside her. He leaned over, staring into her face, still facing the ceiling with its innocent features. Perhaps except for the great gash on the side of it. Bending down, he went ever so close to her. Their lips met, Hei gently caressing Ying's with his. He savored the moment, really liking the softness that met his touch.
At last he broke away, and lay his head beside her. Taking her in his arms, he mouthed.
"Goodnight Ying."
Misaki locked her apartment door and got in her car. It was a sunny day, quite unlike the conditions of the past few. The sun shone brightly above, reflecting on the water puddles that lined the floor. The birds twittered joyfully in the trees she passed. The city was full of life, people bustling about their daily business, children playing about lively. She sighed, it was so not worth it to spend a day like this locked up in her department and chasing stars around.
When she arrived at her department, Ootsuka came rushing up to her.
"Chief chief! Your friend Kanami just called." She almost screamed into her face.
"What did she say?" Misaki replied irritably, rubbing the spit of her face.
"She wants to tell you that KS917's star turned black last night." She panted, barely getting the words out of her mouth.
"WHAT!" Misaki shouted. Then continued "Where?"
"Places around the station. They couldn't get an exact location because every time they tried, something kept blocking them." Ootsuka said.
Misaki burst back out of the department and got back in her car. Speeding towards the station, she managed to arrive in front of it 8 minutes later. She was not surprised to find anything to be of notice. She sighed the second time in a day, why were they so good at cleaning up their mess? She skirted the outskirts but yet again found nothing. Maybe I shouldn't spend my time here, Misaki thought. She returned back to her car, deciding to start researching on why stars would turn black.
xxx Back to Ying's side...xx
I was here again, in the same alleyway facing the same purple glow. And there he was again, the shinigami.
"We are once again united." He said as a drew nearer, his bony hands raising in front of his shoulders.
"I hope you like my gift." he continued, seeing that I didn't make any reaction. "It saved your life this time."
"If it means bringing the people around me into danger, I prefer dying this very moment." I replied finally.
He laughed a dangerous cackle, "You should have seen your face. The grin, the pleasure you had when you murdered all those people. You know you like it Sendo Erika, you just don't want to bear the title of a murderer."
"That wasn't me, that was you!" I almost screamed.
"I shall give you another chance. Trust me, you will come back to me to plead for me to take your soul." He said, raising his scythe as he did so. I was once again sucked back into my own black hole.
I woke with a start, my eyes opening in a flash.
Hei's eyes opened as he sensed the sudden movement beside him. He found himself staring into two dark orbs.
"Ohio Hei!" came Ying's voice. She sounded full of life compared to the last few days.
"Ohio Ying." He replied as he sat up. Somehow, his face gained a slight red tinge as he remembered the kiss they had shared last night.
"What's wrong?" inquired Ying as she peered at him.
"Nothing. Are your wounds okay?" He said quickly, wanting to change the subject.
"Completely fine!" She said cheerfully.
A sudden growl erupted throughout the room. The two laughed, knowing that both of their stomachs wanted to be satisfied. They headed towards "Rriillaakkuummaa Breakfast" ten minutes later. After satisfying their tummy, they moved on towards central city, wanting to kill time until they had to meet the others back at the playground.
She seemed happy, Hei thought, smiling to himself. Much more cheerful than she usually was.
For only she knew the turmoil that was inside her mind.
To be continued...
