Chapter 16: Romantic Night
"What exactly happened?" Huang asked when we finally all sat down.
I started my story. " I was doing the same kind of test like last time. It went on quite well at the start, but then it lasted longer than I expected, much longer. I remember getting hurt quite a few times, and then I blanked out. When I came back, I was already back up in the control room, and then I burst my way through the lab. Then I blanked again. Oh, I remember VI952 was there as well. After that, Hei saved me when I was about to be killed by a boy. He knew my name." I finished.
"He knew your name? How?" Mao inquired.
I shook my head.
"And why do you keep forgetting what happened?" It was Hei's turn to ask.
I shook my head again.
"Well, I'll tell the syndicate to do some research on why so many unexpected people were there." Huang said.
"Will they really care?" I asked, slightly suspicious.
"Yeah they probably will." Huang replied sarcastically. "Considering one of their star contractors were almost killed if it weren't them who sent them after you." He finished and trailed away, taking a smoke as he did so.
I walked towards Yin. "Yin, theres going to be a fair tonight. Since there are no missions anyways, do you want to come with us?"
Yin looked up at me with her blank eyes and slowly nodded her head, then said "I don't have a yukata."
I smiled and dragged her by the hand, saying "That's why you're coming right now."
"Hei?" I asked, turning around to see him still standing by Mao.
"You guyes go first, I'll catch up later." he said.
xxxxx
Ying and Yin walked out of the playground, no doubt heading towards the shops.
Hei turned towards Mao "What did you want to say?" he asked.
"Hei, has Ying been acting strangely lately?" Mao inquired, looking Hei deep in the eye.
He thought about last night when Ying's eyes had turned red, when she had drank his blood.
"I've been doing some research. Since Ying shrank, the first contractor's orb fused with her. This must mean that she now has two contracts, which also means her remuneration is doubled. But have you ever seen her complete it though? We don't even know what it is." Mao continued, seeing that Hei was in deep thought.
"Last night, Ying's eyes were red when I found her, they glowed in a dangerous way. She also licked my blood." Hei replied, somewhat hesitantly. He wasn't really sure whether he wanted anyone to know about Ying's odd behavior.
"She what?!" Mao exclaimed. "But she didn't say anything about that."
"She became unconscious again directly after." Hei continued.
They were silent for a moment, both thinking about what to say next.
"Okay, I'm going to do some more research. For the time being, just stay close to her." Mao said before jumping over the wall.
Hei stared after him, then followed the path to which Ying and Yin had taken some time before.
"How about this one?" I asked, pointing out a pale green yukata. It was decorated with red goldfish, dotted here and there as if swimming joyfully in their tanks. The blue blobs portrayed water and was outlined by a fading grass green color. The sash in the middle was dark blue with a strip of the sky slashed across it. Yin nodded and I ushered her into the changing room, making her put it on. She came out minutes later, looking very different from her usual purple dress.
It was my turn now, and I don't know if I was too picky or what, but it took ages to find one I was really happy about. After a few trying ons, I finally decided on one. Yin and I left the shop, then headed towards accessories store. At last, we parted and decided to meet see each other later.
Night came quickly, the horizon was already draped in black velvet the next time I raised my head. The stars accompanied it, shining like diamonds, contrasting the darkness with great depth. The moon illuminated the pathway as Hei, Yin, and I made our way towards the fair. A perfect night for a perfect event.
The atmosphere was full of happiness, the hikari and noise zoomed throughout the night. They sight that met my eyes was enough to keep them satisfied for an entire life time. Stalls lined the pavement, each laden with food, accessories and drinks. The voices of the advertisers rang through the air, keeping the whole square alert of the latest bargain.
"Onee chan! Yin! Here, here !" I called out to the two, as I myself headed towards a stall selling takoyaki. The smell was irresistible, the sizzle enlightened the air and drew me closer. I bought a box immediately and started on my quest of gobbling it all down. To be honest, I am surprised about how much I am becoming like Hei, just the appetite part.
I darted through the stalls, stopping every now and then and staring at the things the owners had to offer. My hands were full of sweets and balloons. We eventually sat down with me and Yin licking candied haw in a stick, or tang hulu. It was a type of candy with apple which was coated in sugar and poked through with a stick.
"Ying, I'm tired. And Kiko is about to come too." Yin said, pulling the sleeve of my yukata.
I turned and faced her, somehow sad to see her leave our company. But instead I said "Okay, are you going to be okay on your own? Or should I get Hei to take you back?"
"Onee chan! Can you take Yin back?" I called over my shoulder to Hei who was staring at the sky. He started and looked slightly confused, then said "Oh, okay."
So they walked off back towards the way we come, while I wandered off again. I passed a stall selling masks, and whether it was a coincidence or not I'm not sure. The mask looked exactly like Hei's, Kuro no Shinigami's mask. There were fans as well, looking pretty cool actually. I rushed over and bought two white ones accompanied with two purple fans. Why purple? I don't know, I liked the color anyways.
As I kept walking, I walked past a woman wearing a water blue yukata who looked oddly familiar. We brushed pass each other, completely not making any reaction. I turned when we parted, but before I could think of who she actually was, three men appeared in front of my eyes.
"Alone Missy? Do you want to hang out with us?" The first said. Although I was shorter than him by about half a head, I couldn't help but realize the very false smile he had embedded into his face.
"Yeah, let's have some fun!" the second added.
I sighed, wondering why they had to pick me out of everyone. Well, I felt sorry for them, since I don't really know if I can control my powers should they do something "weird."
"No thanks, I'm fine by myself." I said, maintaining what I hope was a sweet smile that didn't look too "false."
"Don't worry, we'll treat you well." The third said, as he tried to swing his arm around my shoulders. I dodged professionally out of his grasp, trying to make it seem like a lucky try.
"I'm fine by myself." I repeated, trying to keep the honey in my voice, also managing to keep smiling.
"Nah, who leaves a damsel in distress? Come one." The first said and pushed me on the back towards wherever we were going, but I could feel his hand moving somewhere downwards. You are going to pay for that. While I knew too good not to get carried away, but I found myself liking the fact of making a prank, after all they started it. Besides it was a good night, so it is accepted, I think.
We arrived at this kind of forest somewhere off the main aisles of stalls. It was pitch black around us, animals and insects haunted the many trees that towered over.
"So, lets get on with this shall we?" They seemed taken aback, since it was I who had taken the lead, not them.
"This ones got experience." Snickered the second.
"No, no I think you are the one getting the wrong idea here." I managed to say finally before all the sweetness drained from my mouth.
"Let's have some fun! Or rather, just let me do the honour..."
Hei had got Yin back to her tobacco shop. Before leaving, Yin had muttered "Hei, look out for Ying." Did she know about Ying's situation as well? Still pondering, he found himself standing at the fair again. After wondering around the many aisles for multiple times, he started to get worried as to where Ying was. She wasn't by and food stalls, nor the playing ones. Could something have happened? Just as he was starting to get desperate, he felt someone materialize behind him.
A mask was placed on his face, Hei was about to retaliate, but then he heard the voice and relaxed.
"Konnichiwa, Kuro no Shinigami san" Came Ying's voice by his ear.
"Xing." Hei said as he turned and faced a person who was wearing the same mask he was wearing.
"Xing, where did you get this?" Hei said somewhat too harshly.
"Don't worry, its just from one of the stalls." Ying replied quickly. "Besides," She continued, handing him the purple fans. "It looks pretty cool don't you think?"
They had already wondered through most of the stalls, and were just waiting for the fireworks.
"Where were you anyways? I couldn't find you until you were behind me?" Hei asked.
"Well, I had some business." Ying said playfully. "I managed to have some first hand experience of hand in hand combat, even though the target didn't even attack me. Oh, I also learnt properly how to tie someones hands and legs up. "
Hei stared at Ying astounded, though not showing it on his face. "You what?!"
"I had to do it, they were harassing me with all these wierd things." Protested Ying, looking quite pleased with herself.
Though Hei didn't quite approve of Ying showing her abilities here in public, he supposed it was necessary, especially when they were trying to subdue you.
They kept walking, sensing something was wrong.
Ying whispered "Hei."
Hei nodded and indicated to keep walking. Someone wearing a blue yukata was following closely behind, she had been there for some time. Slowly, Ying realized who she was.
"It's the police." She whispered.
"Don't worry, act calm." Hei replied.
And this was what they did, until Hei felt something touch his back.
"Turn around slowly and take your mask off." Came the voice of...
"Li kun!" exclaimed Kirihara Misaki.
"Kirihara san! Nice to see you here! Did I do something wrong?" Hei immediately swapped into his Li persona and said with a smile as he took off the Kuro no Shinigami mask.
"No, I just thought you were someone else." Misaki though how stupid she was, BK201 wasn't going to just appear in a fair, wearing his mask and busting his identity.
"Aren't you the person who was on the roof that day?" I said, taking my mask off as well, remembering the last time we had met.
"Yeah. My name is Kirihara Misaki." Misaki held her hand out and the two shook hands.
After brief conversations which were exchanged, they parted as the announcement for fireworks finally sounded.
Igniting the light, they let it shine. The fireworks owned the night as they instantly took the main characters role. A dance of colors flooded down on the awe struck on lookers down below. As each rippled off the sea of darkness, more came to take its presence. Eventually, the whole atmosphere was covered in booms and "ohs" or "ahs" The display wasn't going to last much longer, but to all of us, its spectacular show would be cherished in our minds forever.
I kept thinking about it even when Hei and I were walking back to Misuzu holding hands.
"Hei." I started then paused.
"Hm?" Hei turned and looked at me.
"Lets come to the fair again next time." I said cheerfully.
"Sure." he said with a gentle smile.
Little did I know this was going to an akai no yakusoku.
To be continued...
Hei: What is "akai no yakusoku"
Me: It means scarlet promise.
Ying: Whys the promise red?
Me: YOU're the one who said it and you don't know?
Ying: Of course I don't, Im not the writer.
Hei: Yeah yeah whatever. I say the last bit since those two are having a girl fight.
Me, Ying: HEY!
Hei: What? Well either ways heres the end of chapter 16! She would like to thank all the reviews up to now, and hope for more to come. And since the authors kinda of hurt right now, she might not be able to upload for some time or so.
Me: Yeah, but the real reason is I'm going on holiday to Spain! Too excited! I think I will still update since I am bringing my laptop, but probably not so frequent. Oh well adios~
