Chapter 17: Filtration

Creeping along in the darkness, I slowly approached the target. Without much sound, Kuro Sakura sliced through him and he fell noiselessly to the ground, sprinkling a little blood as he did so.

"Yin, point A acquired." I whispered into the earpiece.

"Proceed to point C." Came the reply.

At that moment Hei's voice said "Point B acquired."

"Proceed to point D." Yin responded.

As I sneaked along the path towards the second target, I thought about tonight's mission. We were sent to take out the sentries first and then to infiltrate the whole manor in order to find a girl. I didn't see the point of taking out the sentries, why no just sneak in and take the girl directly? And besides, why do we need this girl in the first place?

Another thrust and point C was taken. I arrived on the roof just in front of the central court, Hei arriving seconds later. Together we stared down at the dark, but grand manor. With a nod, we both plunged into the darkness, landing like a stealthy cat inside. Slowly, we crept around in search of this mysterious girl.

The place was strangely quite, it was as if it was an ambush. That we were actually expected to be there, expected to be taking the life of the target. As I crossed a door, I heard movement inside.

"Hei, target found." I whispered into the earpiece. He appeared next to me in the next few seconds and together we stood intently, trying to listen for more evidence. Scrape, a few scratches, and then silence. Then, drip, drip, drip...

We flung open the door and confronted the noise.

"Long time no see Hei, Ying." the little girl said. She had light green hair which reached down her back. Her eyes were amber, and she wore a pink jumpsuit.

"Amber..." Hei said in disbelief.

Amber, the woman Hei had loved before, the same one who broke his heart as well.

"You've grown taller Ying, when was the last time I saw you?" She said casually.

I was quiet, not knowing how to respond. Is she suppose to be an ally or enemy?

"Amber..." Hei's voice was rising, and he strode towards her and pinned her neck against the wall. He growled "Where is Bai?"

She seemed undaunted by the action he had taken, but merely responded with a smile on her face "Hei, do you want to see Bai?"

They stared at each other, silence dawned in the room. Amber continued "Bai's always beside you."

Hei almost made to slap her, but at that moment her eyes glowed red and she was highlighted in blue.

Time froze, Hei and I stood transfixed to the wooden floor. Amber walked towards Hei and tapped his ear, reviving his senses.

"Hei, you've also got Ying. Don't forget about that." She walked past me and said with a small smile "Sayonara."

Time unfroze, but we still stood rooted in the spot, alone apart from each other.

"Hei..." I said some time after. But he paid no attention and rushed out of the room back into the courtyard. I followed, and of course there was no one to be seen. Amber had already disappeared. Hei was standing in the middle, not making a move or a sound. I made my way over and hugged him from behind, wrapping my arms around his waist. He seemed so cold now, losing his usual warmth.

"We should go Hei.." I said quietly.

Hei didn't reply but followed obediently as I held his sleeve and guided him onwards.

Once back on the roof, I said into the earpiece "Yin, mission failed." And then "Huang, are you there?"

There was some distractions and then came "Yeah."

"The girl we were sent to get was Amber." I started.

"What? Either ways, get you and Hei back now." Huang commanded.

"Hai." I said and carried on our way.

We arrived a few moments later back in Huang's van. I started thinking why I hadn't asked why she was there. I could have got some answers, and yet I let go of my chance. I glanced over at Hei, he had taken his mask off now so I could see his face clearly, illuminated by the moonlight. His eyes were blank, almost as if in a memory relapse. His body looked limp against his seat.

I didn't like to see Hei like this. It wasn't him. It just isn't what I am accustomed to.

"Are you sure it's okay like that?" Amagiri asked.

"Yeah. It's fine." came Amber's reply.

They were walking down a dark alleyway, making sure they took the complete opposite way to which their visitors had taken.

"Amber, why not just tell him the truth?" Amagiri continued.

She was quiet for a moment, pondering her answer " Ying needs time to change him."

"How can you believe she can do that when she doesn't even know about it?" he pressed on.

Amber turned on him and smiled " She reminds him of Bai. That will be enough." She turned back and kept walking.

Amagiri knew that was the end of the topic. Although he was always loyal to Amber, he couldn't help but sometimes wonder why and how she had made various decisions.

Little star, what you have lost you must find. Come little star, retrieve what you have left behind. Take your friends little star, they shall guide you to what you don't have. Little star little star, take me with you.

Hei was alone in his room, still thinking about the strange encounter he had just had. Why was Amber there in the first place? Most importantly, where is Bai?

He knew he could lose control, he knew he didn't want to lose anyone important to him anymore. He didn't want to lose himself and forget all that he had held dear. And her last words "you've also got Ying. Don't forget about that..." He knew what she was hinting at, he had realized himself as well. Ying resembled Bai as a little sister.

At last, Hei smiled at the thought. The first step of becoming normal again. Yet sometimes, there was more to her than just a little sister. Hei couldn't tell what it was, he wasn't suppose to be able to , he was a contractor, he doesn't have emotions.

His stomach growled, and his hand moved unconsciously to his stomach. He got up and move towards the door, wondering whether his "little sister" cared to join him for some midnight snack.

He found Ying propped against the wall in the living room. Shoving jelly beans in her mouth as she turned the page of her book. She didn't look up from her book as Hei passed.

"Ying, can we go out and have something?" he asked, squatting beside her.

"Okay." Looking very delighted at the offer and quickly shoving her book away.

They arrived outside McRonald's 10 minutes later.

"Good evening sir! What would you like to order today?"

"Xing, what do you want?" Hei turned to Ying.

She pointed to a variety of different meals. The lady took it , looking slightly astounded at her appetite. But then she smiled again as she caught the fact that Hei was going to eat too.

They sat waiting for their meal. Ying had gotten her phone out while Hei stared blankly out the window. There were a bunch of people holding laterns and walking outside. It seemed as though they were celebrating something. A smile graced Hei's lips as he remembered the time at the fair, when he and Ying had lay down on the grass, staring at the bright sky.

He was staring at the girl wearing a black yukata. The pink petals drifted along and fixed themselves at various points, inking themselves on the fabric. Butterflies fluttered amongst the petals, darting here and there as if playing a game. Small spots of diamonds also imprinted themselves, giving it the final finishing touch.

"Kill me Hei."

Hei was instantly plunged into darkness. He was falling, falling but yet the figure in front of him was clearer than ever before. Her yukata was dissolving, the black background had become black petals that reformed themselves behind the girl. The wings looked like angels, and yet they were pitch black, reminding him of a devil. Two devilish horns appeared on her head, embedding themselves in her black hair. She was now wearing a black dress that trailed towards her knee. Her high heeled boots were decorated with a white bow at the top. A black butterfly lingered around her head and eventually stopped on her finger which she held up to her face. Her eyes were red, the only glowing thing in the pitch black surroundings.

"Hei? Hei! HEI!

Hei snapped out of his trance. Ying was staring at him with concerned eyes.

"You are crying Hei." She said uncomfortably, staring at him with worried eyes.

Hei realized that a single tear had escaped from his eyes and trailed down his cheek.

"Are you alright?" Ying inquired as he quickly wiped his off with the back of his sleeve.

He grunted and started his meal, not feeling hungry anymore. They ate in silence, not daring to speak.

They were walking in the moonlight, along the path that led back to Misuzu. Hei's eyes were blank, almost as if he was an empty shell, drifting along the world. They arrived back inside a few minutes later, and parted separate ways and returned to their room.

xxxx carrying on from Ying's view..xx

What was wrong with Hei? He seemed so empty, not reacting to anything. What had he seen, he isn't the same person I know. I could tell he almost flinched when I touched him, and the tear. The tear that betrayed his feelings. What happened?

Eventually, I think I drifted off. Only to wake up later startled, still sitting upright with my book propped on my lap. Taking a look at the clock, it was already 2:30 AM. I made up my mind.

Slowly, my feet carried myself to Hei's door, and I slowly opened it. Hei was already asleep, obviously, since it was so late. I approached the bed and stood their motionless for a few seconds. I took from my pocket a key, a matching one with the locket Hei had given me. Sliding it on his neck, I raised my left hand and whispered.

"Men for the sake of living for get to live. Hei, let go of your bonds, let go of your fears. Give all your stress wings and let if fly away. Half our life is spent trying to find something we are trying to save. Hei, that's enough. Forget everything, I will tell you when its time. Hei, let it go. For I am always by your side. I am forever yours."
