Devil's Backbone

Sleep was profound and bliss, nothing but darkness; clearly too tired to dream. All of it was nice, until something woke her up and it gnawed at her. It was something old and familiar, but undesired. Clara opened her eyes and couldn't stop it no matter how hard she tried. She rubbed her face and a tear began to form in her eyes as this sinking sensation took place in her core, making the one tear turn into two.

Meeting Anne had done something never before possible: bring forward Clara's human half and silence her demonic side. When Anne had performed the spell, the demon was there, but so was the human. That half hasn't been at the surface in a long time and then seeing the way Anne and Viviane looked at each other, for the first time, the human half was strong.

Clara couldn't take away from Anne the one thing she wished someone had given her. It wasn't fair. She couldn't take something so wonderful away from her own blood relative, a girl so good and kind.

Clara actually liked Anne. The girl stood up to Crowley fearlessly! How could she not like her?

When Crowley had lifted up the transfer papers, Clara knew what she had to do. And she did.

Now? Now she could feel those human emotions floating to the top and tearing her apart; the hurt, the happiness for Anne and Viviane and the tears that stung her eyes and confused her. It was all so horrible! These wretched human emotions!

Clara sat up and wiped away the tears, but they continued to form against her will. She glanced down at her stomach and knew that her daughter was going through the same wave of emotions, which was probably the reason why Clara had no control.

She pulled back the blankets and climbed out of bed as Ginger leaped out of the way and looked up with a worried expression in her beady glowing eyes. Clara walked to the bathroom and avoiding looking at herself in the mirror. She turned on the cold water and washed her face, trying to wash away those human emotions and those damned tears.

After a few seconds, she began to feel better. She closed her eyes and focused on her breathing to calm herself. For what felt like a dozen of minutes standing there with her eyes closed, Clara felt like the human had sunk down to the deep abyss of her soul to let her demonic essence dominate once again.

The door to the apartment opened and closed and she smiled softly, at ease knowing that Crowley was there to comfort her. She could relax in his arms and fall asleep. Hopefully, his arms could offer her a human emotion free sleep.

When she turned to face him in the bathroom door way, she froze before she could meet his eyes and felt her stomach twist. A stench hit her like a brick wall and a sickening wave hit her, making her head spin and her stomach twist harder, forcing her body to contract; bringing up whatever she had in her stomach.

Clara just made it to the toilet and vomited. That smell burned her nostrils and after about a minute of hovering over the toilet bowl, she leaned back on her knees and wiped her mouth, trying hard not to look at Crowley.

She knew he was confused, but the fact that he stood back told her that he wasn't insulted.

"Sorry, babe." She said and slowly got up to her feet, only now realizing what made her vomit. "I guess the human in me got a whiff of your sulfur and couldn't stomach it." she added, feeling that dreadful heaviness that accompanied her realization that her humanity wouldn't be so easily sunk.

She returned to bed and Crowley sat in the chair, watching her with a blank expression. However, she could see concern in his eyes. She knew why. Besides seeing his Queen feeling a little human, there was an ever present threat outside the bar earlier. Clara had sensed the angels as well. Their presence alerted her that they aware of something powerful growing in Hell. Whether they knew she was pregnant or not was beyond her, but if they ever learnt of her daughter… she couldn't bring herself to think of it.

As if Crowley could hear her thought, he approached and when her stomach didn't heave, he crawled into bed with her and wrapped an arm around her, reassuringly. Clara could feel those tears fighting to return, but she wouldn't allow them this time. She refused to think of the possible dangers to her daughter's life.

So, she asked to be distracted.

"Have you more ideas for our daughter's name?" she asked Crowley and closed her eyes as he whispered into her ear. He seemed fond of quite a few names, such as Melana which meant dark. Then, he seemed to strongly like Lorelei which meant destruction and Tempest which meant stormy.

Although, the last two were nice, Clara just couldn't see them as well representing her daughter.

"I seem to remember you telling me our daughter will be a mixture of us both." Clara said and realized that it was the fatigue talking. What did that have anything to do with naming their child? However, Crowley let out a soft growl as if he was amused.

"Do you suggest we combine our names?" he asked and she let out a tired giggle. "Like Brangelina and Kimye?" he asked and her giggle was a little louder this time, as if no matter how tired she was, that was really worthy of laughter. "We would be Crowlara." He said and her giggle turned into a full laugh which hurt her chest and allowed those wretched tears to become tears of laughter. "Or Clarey." He added and then she wiped away the tears.

"How awful." She said and he chuckled like she had never heard before. "But not totally bad." She added and it seemed he disagreed. Shortly after, they both remained silent for a brief moment, until Crowley soon returned to suggesting names as she began slowly drifting off to sleep.

"Keegan means fiery and then there's Kerry, Kieran and Keara which all mean dark." he said and then Clara snapped her eyes opened and turned her head and glanced at him over her shoulder.

"What was that last one?" she asked and he repeated it softly. Keara.

It sounded perfect.

And there you have it, the name that won in my poll of names. It was actually the name I intended to name their daughter, so when it got the most votes, I was pretty pumped.
