Chapter 18: Akatsuki
Standing in the blush of dawn, were four men. They stood solitary in the sunlight.
"It's finally time." The one dressed in white said.
"The time when we should set out and change the world." The man in black continued.
"For now their master has risen." The man in yellow said purposefully.
"Shall we go then?" The man in blue said finally.
They stared for a second more into the new dawn, then disappeared into the brightness of the hikari.
Hei had woken to find his chest slightly weighed down. Sitting up, he found a key dangling from a chain around his neck. It looked familiar, it was the same kind of design like the locket he had given Ying. He wondered where she found this. Getting up, he stretched and found that his body was lighter than usual. Making his way out of the room, he emerged into the living room only to find it empty. A note was lying on the table.
"Hei, meet me in the front of the round building 1200m into the woods. Make sure no one follows you. 42-42-564-201.
Ying
42-42-564-201? What was that suppose to mean? What is she planning to do? Hei sighed, sometimes he wondered what was in her head. She didn't even mention the time.
"Li kun! Oh, Xing walked out quite some time before. She wants me to tell you to have some breakfast first. Well, see ya!" The landlady adjusted her bun slightly and walked back down the flight of steps.
After having a quick breakfast, he made his way towards the place Ying had mentioned. It wasn't very hard to locate, considering it was pretty tall and it was the only building in the woods. As he approached it, he realized the door was actually a black panel with a piece of white paper attached to it.
"Death, call me."
What was that suppose to mean? Hei pondered over and over, not really realizing anything. Then, a thought struck him. Huffing a small foggy patch on the pane, he traced the numbers "42-42-564-201". The door started to glow, and eventually dissolved into nothingness, inviting him inside. Taking a look around and making sure he wasn't followed, he walked in.
It was completely dark inside, the exact opposite of the scene outside. A distant melody drifted out from the darkness.
"Oh, stars that have twinkled,
Ah, somehow, please tell me:
Why is that people hurt each other
And fight?
Oh, stars that shine within the night,
What do you see from there?
Why is it that people
Cannot forgive each other?
In the night, the rain passed
And the darkness enlightened,
Small, it twinkled
In front of you and me, Without saying a thing.
What do you think
When your friends wither? With those meteors that do not carry burdens,
How do you convey your sorrow?
The summer night is clouded
And the moon still hangs.
I shall sing
The proof that you once existed
For those who do not have a name.
Please, shine radiantly onwards."
Ying was sitting on a little mound of dirt that looked like a hill. Staring into the sky which by now had been illuminated with thousands of stars. Stars which was a distant memory, a faded dream...
"Welcome to Midnight Dream, Hei." Ying smiled up at him, pausing her song and indicated him to sit down beside her.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" She asked, lying down as she did so.
Hei was quiet, still gazing at the sky in front of him. It wasn't real, it couldn't be. The real stars had already disappeared, it was impossible.
"This," Ying continued, waving at the ceiling "is just fragments from my memory 13 years ago, when I was 6."
"I've managed to turn this place into somewhere to which the mind and scene can connect. This is a memory, I just played it right through. Look, that's the three of us."
Three children came out from the darkness, chattering happily. Two looked older than one, and yet they still played together as equals.
"Bai, Hei! Look! There are shooting stars, I want to make a wish!" said the smallest. She immediately grasped her hands together and closed her eyes, evidently dreaming about her wish. The two older ones held back, staring at the small kid in front.
After she had finished, they all lay a few feet beside where the present Ying was lying.
"It's so beautiful." said Bai in awe.
"Yeah. That's why I love stargazing." replied the younger Hei.
"I hope it stays like this. Under the starry sky, just the three of us together. That will be enough." the younger Ying said.
The three of them lay there for some time, not taking their eyes of the stars.
"Hei, Bai is always with you, and with me. It will always stay like this. Under the starry sky, we are united. That will be enough." It was the present Ying's turn to talk.
Hei still remained silent. Ying walked up to him and held his face with her hands.
"Hei, in this multicolor world, did we meet by chance? Though you and I can't believe things like fate easily. But because we are always by each others side, the road continues on. Bai and I will be there forever and ever with you."
Hei finally moved, he pulled Ying into a tight embrace.
"Thank you..." he murmured into her ear. "Zuuto issho da yo."
To be continued...
Me: Before anyone asks, "Zuuto issho da yo" means "Be together forever."
Bai: Hello!
Ying: Hi!
Hei: Bai! You're back!
Bai: For the time being...
Ying: Where did she go?
Me: Somewhere...
Hei: WA~~~
Me: Here's the end of chapter 18 Akatsuki. Reviews will be awesome!
