Chapter 20: The Violin
We moved on quite quickly, with me still pondering on the riddle Sora had left us. Reject the touch of dark? Embrace the one with a soul not yet devoured? What was that supposed to mean? What was dark? And I thought we all had a soul, so of course its not eaten. Yet.
The wind was blowing harder now, I could feel myself being buffeted slightly. The moon gleamed mysteriously in the sky, casting a bleary eye on all the events happening under its round, cheese-like form. We were weaving our way through many tall oak trees now, getting perhaps another scratch from the twigs and branches here and there. An owl hooted in the distance, letting it echo around the dark, daunting woods.
"Ah~Ahhh...CHOO!" I sneezed quite loudly, almost in the danger of giving our presence away if we weren't in this deserted place. I expected to feel Hei shoot his eyes on me, and I was about to mouth sorry with a small bow of my head as we sprinted onwards. Instead, he stopped, and I did the same. He walked over towards me and shed his coat, handing it to me.
I was about to take it, but asked "Aren't you cold,Hei?"
He shook his head, and indicated for me to take it.
"Are you sure?" I asked in slight disbelief.
Hei nodded, and this time he just walked over towards me and draped it underneath my cloak. It was a little big, and yet I drew it closer around me. It was very warm, giving off the unique scent of its owner.
"Arigatou" I whispered almost into the coat, the warmth lingering and instantly spread to every corner of my ice like body.
By now we had reached a clearing which was quite empty except for a lonely rectangular box, sitting innocently in the middle. No doubt we approached it carefully, wouldn't you be suspicious about the only thing in a place which was suppose to be deprived of human life?
It was pitch black and shiny, the box I mean. It had a silver handle which glittered under the still moonlight. Embroidered on the lid, was a small poem etched in honey gold letters.
"Open me,
In order to fulfill your needs.
Play me well,
And meet your wishes I shall.
Dance, rozen maiden
Under the moon to make me waken.
While you shall not perform,
Guide him through,
this icy storm."
I sighed really loudly now, why was today's mission full of riddles? Did I mention I am not much of a literature fan?
"Hei, your area of expertise, good luck." I said as I moved away from the box, wanting to find somewhere to perhaps sit down and make myself feel warmer. Fine, to be honest it was quite obvious that we or perhaps I, since it said "maiden", had to dance. I just didn't want to make fun of dancing skills in the middle of nowhere, especially when I am alone with Hei. So I spun on my heels, wanting to disappear.
But I couldn't, something was holding me back. I turned to see Hei holding on to the sleeve of my cloak, staring at my face with his emotionless mask.
"Hei..?" I asked with confusion as Hei guided me towards him and placed my hand on his waist before settling his hand on mine. The other moved up from my sleeve to the palm. We stayed like that for quite a few seconds until Hei's foot and arms started to move, escorting me to do the same.
"Hei, we're in the middle of a mission, and in the middle of no where.." I trailed off, feeling myself look away from Hei's mask, perhaps even blushing. I know we should have stopped, but somehow I just couldn't bring myself to make it happen. Hei was silent, and continued to dance, taking me with him. Under the silver moonlight, our shadows pranced about the dusty ground, drawing small patches of dust as our feet brushed past. Distant birds and insects hummed in harmony, creating the band that was needed to make this "ball" right. I realized we weren't dancing without purpose, we were actually moving slowly around the box, encircling it. I really wished this could have lasted longer, even for eternity.
Coming to an abrupt halt, we stared as the box glowed and rattled slightly in its place. It sizzled, giving off a great amount of smoke into the dark, windy night. After a few seconds, it finally settled down and gave the last puff of smoke. Hei broke away from me and edged towards the box, then settling his hand on the silver handle. I gazed at my palm, the warmth of his hand still lingered on it and I wasn't prepared to let it go. Concealing a depressed look, I too approached. Hei turned and I nodded at him.
The lid slowly ascended from its case and stood upright.
Inside, looking as if it were sleeping was a violin. It was pure white, creating a great contrast between the dark black velvet it was placed in. A black rose-like pattern was imprinted on the left half of the violin, disappearing as it reached the top bit. I wondered whether it was just my head or did it give out a strange black glow?
Hei placed his hand on the neck of the violin and held it up to the moonlight. For that moment, it looked completely transparent. Something that let the moonlight flood into its soul.
"Play it." I suggested, eager to hear the sound of this mysterious "weapon."
Hei however shook his head and held it out. "I don't know how to."
I was slightly disappointed that I wouldn't be able to hear its voice. Of course, I knew how to play it, but I wanted to hear Hei play it. I reached out for it, wanting to take it from his hands.
As soon as I laid a finger on it, it gave a great burst of black electricity and light. Blasted back, I almost toppled to the floor. I slowly clambered back up and stared at it bewildered.
"Why...?" I asked quietly.
And then it struck me. Reject the touch of darkness, embrace the touch of one whos soul is not yet devoured. Of course, how could I have been so stupid. Though I haven't made a contract with him yet, I've already seen him before. The one who resides in Hell, he who takes the soul of those who dare to defy him. On the other hand, how could I be sure that Hei hadn't met him? But then again, if he could hold the violin in the first place, that would mean that he hadn't?
"Hei, have you...met..him before?" I asked, raising my eyes level to his mask.
But before he could answer, there was a rustle from the bushes behind. We spun around instinctively, catching out of the corner of our eye, a flash of green that whipped out of sight as soon as it had appeared.
Kuro Sakura materialized in my hand and I covered Hei as he tried to find somewhere to put the violin. Naturally, he thought about putting it back into the case, but as he spun towards it, he found that it had disappeared. Hei couldn't put it on the floor either as if somebody stood on it, that would be the end. Mission failed.
A great gush of wind came straight towards our faces, blowing my hood off my head. As my black hair flowed out behind me, another swoosh sent them back to the back of my head. A shadow swiftly appeared in front of my face and came a short "BOO!"
Disappeared.
What was that? I whipped around, still holding Kuro Sakura protectively to shield Hei, me and of course the violin.
"Ying." Hei murmured.
I spun around yet again, this time realizing that we were surrounded. Not completely, but 4 people circled us, each standing a good distance between us. The one wearing black, I recognized as the one who had just made the surprise shadow thing.
"Don't worry, we just want the violin. You have nothing to fear, unless you don't give it back of course." The man in white said with a smile on his face.
"Then we should have something to fear, since we have no intention of letting it fall into your possession." I said with a sneer.
"You probably would put up a fight, but don't forget your friend. He's holding the violin and can't battle with it~" The one in yellow said with a little snicker.
I could sense the bloodlust behind me, and I didn't dare turn around.
"We'll see about that." I said and to their surprise, let Kuro Sakura dissolve into black dust. With a great burst of velocity, I appeared behind Hei.
I slid the violin onto his shoulder and indicated him to lower his chin slightly. Grabbing his hand, I placed it on the pitch black neck of the instrument and covered it with my own. Then, I took his hand with my own and adjusted the position on the bow. All set.
Play me well, And meet your wishes I shall. While you shall not perform, guide him through this icy storm.
Lifting the bow, I implanted it on the strings and started to pilot Hei's hands into playing a tune. At first, I simply played random bits of song that still remained in my memory for so many years, hoping that the violin itself will do the magic. Then a thought struck me. I pressed Hei's forefinger to the E String, then the ring finger on the A String. Repeating that twice, continued with three other notes.
FD~FD~GAF

The other that came into mind. Which was die, die, murder.
At the last note, the violin gave a great shudder and glowed black. It was as if it was sending a great bolt of electricity into its surroundings. The four who were circling us were blasted back into the clearing, each gaining a bloody gash here and there. There was a moment where nothing moved, with Hei and I staring bewildered at the enemies.
"Now that was nasty." The one in green wiped a trickle of blood from the edge of his mouth and said.
I gritted my teeth, we couldn't win like this. Not with the weapon we couldn't really use, and only one contractor.
"Hei, count to five and jump back." I whispered into Hei's ear.
Now, I addressed the crowd. "Well gentleman, please excuse us. I bowed as my eyes glowed red, creating a black hole behind Hei and I.
"STOP HER!" The one in yellow bellowed to his companions.
Too late. With a swish, The man, the violin, and the Grand Master disappeared.
To be continued...

Me: You're not sick yet, you only sneezed.
