Chapter21: Stranded
"Where are we?"
"Somewhere near the station."
We were panting now, leaning against the railings of a tall abandoned building. I grabbed out my phone and started to phone Huang.
"Are you there yet?" I asked in frustration.
"Almost." Huang replied shortly.
"Could you hurry up?" I spat a little bit too harshly.
" Damn contractors nowadays..." I heard Huang muttered as he hung up.
I sighed deeply, perhaps I was letting things get on my nerve too much. I should probably apologize later.
"Where are we going to meet them?" Hei asked. Could I hear a straight strain in his voice? Or was it just the mask?
"A few blocks away from here. We will have to go down in public." I responded and started to change out of my current outfit. I was always surprised and impressed at how Hei and I were able to hide all our normal clothes away and pass of naturally.
5 minutes later, Hei and I were standing on the bright, windy streets. Hei was now wearing his white shirt with blue jeans and the green jacket he always had. I was wearing a black hoodie with a white short sleeve jacket along with my mission skirt I couldn't be bothered to change out of. I had tied my hear into pigtails just so they won't be a bother.
We started to walk, making our way wearily towards our meeting place. A small blot of white fell in front of my eyes, more then followed in its wake. Snow, I thought to myself and drew my jacket closer around me. Why on earth was I wearing a stupid skirt? Hei sneezed, and I glanced at him.
"Are you okay?" I asked with concern.
"Fine." Hei said shortly and carried on his way. I followed on and shortly after, we reached a van that was parked to the sidewalk.
"Huang" I greeted briefly as Hei and I clambered aboard.
"Who's late this time?" He asked with a smirk and started to drive. I however had already drifted off and stared out of the window, gazing at the scenery that whooshed past our eyes.
Hei sneezed louder this time, and I could hear his breathing becoming slightly more quicker than usual.
"Did you get it?" Huang asked in the front.
"Hai." I said "It was a violin."
Huang grunted and then said "The syndicate wants you and Hei to keep it for the time being."
"Why? I thought they wanted it to be sent to the Hokkaido scientists."
"Who knows?" He shrugged. "Oh and you won't be going back to Tokyo yet. They want you for something else tomorrow."
I sighed in reply. Knowing that our conversation was at an end, I turned my attention back outside the window. It looked so blurry outside, and yet so beautiful with all the snow drifting slowly down. Too bad I couldn't spend time outside and build a snow man. This brought a smile to my face as I remembered when Bai, Hei, and I had done so in the grounds of the training facility. Though it was just a short experience, I suppose it could be one of the happiest moments of my life.
We arrived at what looked like a hotel a few minutes later and Huang left us with the message of "Li Shengun Room 201" and also "Cafe to the left on the 1st floor 9:30" He drove off, leaving us to mind ourselves. After checking in at the counter, we stood in front of our door. I was about to enter when Hei coughed loudly and continuously.
"Are you okay?" I asked for the second time.
Hei's head lolled slightly with his eyes closed, and I realized that great beads of sweat trickled down his pale white face. His breathing was much more uneven now, sometimes coming out in big gasps.
"Fine, just a little ti..." Hei's unfinished sentence was completed as he fell fowards, putting his weight on me. I only managed to hold his body up straight. Opening the door, I heaved Hei's limp body with some difficulty into the room and laid him on one of the beds.
I got to my feet and rushed around in search for a towel and a bucket. Finding what I needed in the bathroom, I filled the bucket up with tap water and returned to Hei's bedside. Dipping the towel in the cold water, I soaked it wet and placed it on Hei's forehead. I repeated the process several times and then quickly gathered myself up and rushed to the door.
Taking a backwards glance at the figure on the bed, I closed the door shut behind me. I hurried down and ran out of the entrance hall. I am pretty sure it was this way... I thought to myself as I hurried along the snowy streets towards the pharmacy I had seen when Huang drove past. Strangely, I couldn't seem to find it although I was sure I was on the right street.
"Are you lost, my lady?" Came a voice behind me. I turned towards the person and secretly thinking, great, another jerk just when I needed to find something desperate. But perhaps, this time I could ask him.
He was wearing a white suit and his blonde hair was slightly lined with snow. He had pale blue eyes and he was smiling even though his clothing didn't look like it could make him very warm.
"Um, could you possibly point me in the direction of the pharmacy?" I said, returning his smile with my Xing persona.
"Of course, but it is kind of hard to explain. Should I accompany you instead?" He asked in a kind way.
Normally I would have preferred to reject the offer, but since today I was desperate, I accepted. So, we walked along the now thinning streets.
"How rude of me, I haven't introduced myself. My name is Jack Simon." He held out his hand to me, and I shook it.
"I am Li Yuxing." I replied.
"Is this your first time in Hokkaido?"
"Hai. I'm a transfer student."
Silence, and then he continued.
"Is there anything you need at the pharmacy?"
"Something to cure a fever and a cold perhaps."
He stared at me for a while before concluding 'You seem pretty fine to me. Is it for your parents?"
"It's for my brother." I said. I wondered why he cared so much, or was he just trying to strike up a conversation?
We turned onto another almost deserted street and finally I saw our destination. It was very warm inside which made me relieved as I was starting to regret having forgotten to grab a thicker coat again. But that was why I was here in the first place, because I had made Hei sick since he gave me his coat.
After asking the lady at the counter, Jack Simon and I finally emerged from the shop 10 minutes later with me carrying a brown bag. I turned to him and said "That will be all for now. Thank you for helping me Mr. Simon."
"My pleasure." He gave a small bow. I smiled in return and started to walk back the way we had come. A few metres away, I heard his cellphone ring.
"This is November 11. ...Okay...The violin was taken?...Okay..."
I sighed in my mind, was there really someone I met who wasn't associated with a secret group?
xxxx To Hei's side...xx
Where am I?
Hei's head was spinning, he couldn't think properly. He tried to lift himself up from the bed, but he crashed back down almost immediately. His body was boiling hot, almost as if someone had lit a blazing fire into his blood system. He lay there, trying to get his aching mind into thinking about where he was now. He remembered now, they were in Hokkaido. The violin, the four people, Huang's van, Ying's concerned face all flashed past his mind.
Where is Ying?
Trying to turn his head to survey the room, Hei heaved himself onto his side. The room was dark, nothing else was stirring apart from himself. It was so cold, and his head hurt so much.
Just then, the door opened.
"Ying..." Hei rasped, finding that even his throat was siring and his voice was merely more than a whisper. He heard footsteps making their way towards him as he laid his head back down on the pillows. There was a bit of rummaging about and then he felt someone approach him. He opened his tired eyes again and saw Ying's black ones peering anxiously back at his.
"Ying.." He said again.
"Here. This should make you better." Ying handed him a few pills. Hei shoved them feverishly in his mouth and Ying moved the glass of water to his lips. A few drops of it fell down his shirt and Ying immediately grabbed tissues to wipe them up. She then helped him back into his sleeping position and watched as he closed his eyes again. Ying reached for the bucket and towel by her feet and did the same process as before.
Ying yawned a little, getting slightly tired now. She glanced back at Hei and a small smile graced her lips as she settled down beside him. Perhaps it wouldn't matter. Just for a little while, she thought as her eyes drooped. Just for ten minutes.
"Goodnight Hei."
To be continued...
