Chapter 26: Enemy or Alley?

Hei crouched behind a wall as he waited for his target. He glanced beside him, catching sight of Ying who was almost dozing off. Really, he thought, Ying would never do this. Footsteps were making their way towards them and Hei quickly turned back to his prey. He was a tall and slim man, like someone in their thirties or so.

"Ying." He muttered.

No answer.

Hei spun around, looking for the figure beside him. And she was gone. Now what? He thought.

"So you are our target." Came a voice. Hei could feel himself sneer, this was just stupid.

Sure enough, Ying was standing in front of the man, pointing Kuro Sakura at him. In fact, even the scythe seemed a little different. It looked slightly smaller than usual, the blade was blunt and the dark color it had had faded. It looked almost like a children's toy compared to the usual devil-like weapon it was.

"Let's get this over with." the man said, and darted over towards the girl, pulling out a knife. He started to chop wildly at Ying, and she actually blocked quite well. But that was until he got serious. His attacks were becoming more organized, aiming at her weak points as he slowly recognized her fighting style.

Another swipe, and it cut her arm deeply. She screamed in pain, making Hei scowl. Really, he thought, she would need to try better to impersonate Ying. The way she wielded a scythe, the various uses of her ability were all combined to make a special unique fighting technique that almost no one in the world could possibly predict was she was going to do next.

Ying turned on her heel and started to run for it. Hei sighed, and stood in between the two before the man could follow. Drawing out his dagger, he threw it at the man and he dodged it, leaning slightly to the left. Hei sprang forwards, and let his wire wrap itself around the enemies neck. He sent a high voltage charge down the wire and the man shook, then withered to the floor.

Just as Hei was about to make his departure, a voice came from behind him.

"STOP! Put your hands in the air." It was the same officer who seemed to be always there to find him, Kirihara Misaki. He turned his head slightly, penetrating her with a stare, and then turned back, wanting to continue with his escape.

"Wait! BK201, I have something to tell you." Hei stopped, but didn't turn around. He couldn't be sure whether this was a trap or trick of some kind. In the end, he decided he didn't need to hear what she had to say. So he moved to leave once again.

"It's about KS917."

That made Hei stop dead in his tracks. He slowly turned around and drew out his dagger, pointing it at her and indicating her to continue.

"A few days ago in Hokkaido, I saw KS917 in the mountains. Her star had turned black and her eyes were red. Two men were capturing her, and they did. Their plan was to send an impostor in her place."

Hei pondered the information he had just heard. Indeed, if this was the case it would prove why this impostor Ying was here in the first place. Then again, why was the police helping him?

He moved to attack, pinning Misaki to the wall behind.

"Why are you telling me this?" He asked quietly, trying to conceal his real voice just in case it gave him away.

"Ying, your cousin. She was related to KS917 wasn't she? I called her Yui, they shared that same kind of look. I suppose I just can't let her go."

Hei was slightly taken aback by her ability to find out things. At least she hadn't directly guessed the fact that she was the contractor she sought.

"Thank you." He murmured, then knocked the hilt of his dagger on her head, making her fall unconscious. He leaned her gently on the wall, and this time left without any interruptions.

After a few minutes of searching, Hei found Ying on a roof of a nearby building. He crossed over to her, and before she could say anything, took her in his hands.

"Hei." She said happily as she too wrapped her hands around his back.

"Ying, can I ask you another question?" This was it. The key to everything.

"Go on."

"Who do you love most in the world?" Hei drew out his dagger once again, and then slowly pointed to the girl who he treasured the most.

"Don't let me go.
Just hold my hand like you always do.
And tell me you won't leave me.
Your hand was warm and gentle
A something that I will never forget.

Don't let me go.
Won't you smile just once more?
Before I vanish
Embrace me.

Mou nidoto wa aenai tte koto wo shitteta no?"

The man watched as the girl sitting inside continued to stare out of the window, singing such a beautiful melody. The silver light of the moon bore down on her, illuminating a figure in a trance like glow. Her black dress lay scattered around her, making her look like a broken piece from a ragged doll. Manacles on her ankles and wrists connected themselves to the wall, limiting her action to only a few centimetres from the wall itself. He couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for her. She really didn't have to endure this, if she wasn't the holder of the Shinigami's powers that is. For now, they had managed to keep her in control by sealing her ability temporarily. However, this was slightly risky as the seal could be broken by the bearer if their mental strength was powerful enough. So they devised a plan for that as well. They had tempered with her mind using the ME while she was unconscious during the first day.

There she was, only left with the darkest sides of the world. All happiness merely a distant dream.

Ying lay her head back on the bricks behind her, she felt so tired, with no energy to even raise a finger. She knew she couldn't stay like this forever, she needed to get out. She had to. And yet... She tried again hopelessly to activate her ability, and of course nothing happened. A red glow shone radiantly from forehead, a small black diamond appearing.

Once again, all the energy she had drained out, if she had any in the first place.

Shinigami, what would happen if I stay here?

"You'll probably die, or most likely destruct the world."

Oh, so I am a weapon?

"What's happened to that brain of yours?"

I don't know.

*silence*

Is there a way to get out? I mean I can't move, nor can I use my ability.

"There always was a way, unless you want to leave it to that boyfriend of yours."

*silence*

What if he doesn't come?

"You could take the other choice."

What would happen to me then?

"Put it like this, I will be your only audience when you sing that song of yours."

Will I be dead?

"Dead? Maybe. Soul less, yes."

Can we make a deal?

"We always were."

Help me to finish everything I have left. You can take my soul then.

"I'll take your word."

We can start by getting out first. And breaking the seal.

"I can work that out myself."

Any ideas?

"You're the only one that's limited. Prepare to go through hell..."

Ying opened her tired eyes that were blazing with a new kind of "hope" within her black iris.

Hei. Gomen...

"Answer me."

"I don't know Hei, what are you talking about? Let me go."

Hei added force to his left hand which was pinning the neck of the girl in front of him to the wall. With his right hand he held his dagger, pointing the tip ever so closely to her flesh. He drew it much closer now, almost brushing the skin.

"Hei, stop!" She whimpered. This didn't get much sympathy, as it only made Hei become more certain that this was not Ying.

"HEI! What are you doing?" came another voice. Mao bounded up from the steps to the left, approaching the two looking surprised. He was closely followed by Yin, who looked more emotionless than ever.

Hei looked at Mao and explained "She's not Ying."

"What do you mean by she's not Ying? How do you know?" Mao didn't seem convinced about what Hei believed in.

"Reasons. She's not acting like her." Hei replied, and he added force to his left arm, causing the girl to gasp for breath.

Yin walked over and gave a long stare. "She's not Ying she concluded."

"Yin too?" Mao said.

"Tell me where she is." Hei growled, drawing the blade gently across her neck, a trail of blood followed in its wake.

"I don't know what you are talking about." She rasped. Yin walked over to her and reached into her pocket, drawing out a earpiece.

"What is this?" She asked.

Ying didn't reply. Yin handed it over to Hei, and he said into it "Your partner is dead."

There were many buzzes and beeps and then "Good evening gentleman, I'll take it you are BK201?"

Hei paused, then said "Who are you?"

"Oh, no one in particular of course. But perhaps someone who holds your fiend captive."

"Where is she?"

"She's fine, quietly living the rest of her days in her room."

Hei wondered why Ying hadn't managed to get out, was it because that these people were just too good? Or was it because of other reasons?

"Do you want to see her, BK201?"

"Where is she?" Hei growled for the nth time tonight.

"Now now, don't be so impatient. How about this, we make a deal. You leave her to us, we leave you alone. Done, simple."

"I decline."

"I knew it wasn't that easy. Yes, how about making your way to Hell's Gate? Oh, you might even want to bring the violin, perhaps we could exchange it for your girlfriend."

There was the sound of a cut, and there was silence once more.

"Huang is waiting down below." Mao said.

The three moved their way towards their partner.

It was time, to get their nakama back.
