Kinda Outta Luck
It was finally her time to see this glorified doctor and Clara was glad. One more minute out there with those baby magazines, Nikolai reading pamphlets and freaking out the women, she would have inflicted some damage to the walls just to blow off some steam. Once he told that woman he was just the babysitter, she just stared at him oddly and whispered to the much younger one beside her who then stared at Clara oddly.
Her grin didn't last long. She felt tempted to hurt the woman just for staring, but her unborn baby stopped her. Being a pregnant woman herself, Clara didn't want to inflict pain where there was already some.
So she just walked into the doctor's office and sat down on the bed that was way too high for a pregnant woman and waited. Eventually, the guy walked in and when she met his eyes, she was rendered speechless. He was young, wavy blond hair and blue eyes that sparkled as they always did.
"I can't believe it." he said and then he smiled. After all these years, that smile still made her blush. "I saw the name and thought maybe it was you, but felt foolish. Now…" he said and just stared at her. "Now you're here, really here." He said and it felt like all of eternity he was staring at her. "You haven't changed at all." He said and she knew the awkward uncomfortable moment was about to explode in her face. "You look just like the last day I saw you." He added and she couldn't take it anymore. Luckily, he then dropped his eyes down to her stomach and his smile faded, but only slightly.
"Steven," Clara said softly, which got him to look back up at her. "I didn't know you were in Switzerland." She said, trying to smooth out the situation a little and felt better when his smile returned.
"Yeah, well after…" he said, letting the sentence drop and she felt a slight twinge of guilt. "I thought it was best to go somewhere and start fresh." He said and at that moment, she felt sort of put off.
The small room was suddenly filled with an awkward silence and he took a chair and sat down in front of her, looking at her stomach.
"So, how far along?" he asked her and when he met her eyes, she could see the pain was still there, after all these years. She wanted to smack him, tell him he placed too much blame on her indirectly and he was stupid for still feeling hurt. Their fling was over and he knew why. End of the story. Move on.
"You're the doctor. You tell me." she said and he let out a small nervous laugh and looked at her stomach again.
"Seems like –" he began to say, touching her stomach gently. Clara could feel Keara stirring as if trying to get away from this man who was not her father. Then, she knew this was useless. This whole situation was useless.
"I just want a plan to deliver my baby in the best hospital with the best doctor. That's why I'm here." She said, a little harsher than she intended. However, he didn't seem to have felt the blunt hit. His smile remained and his eyes sparkled still.
"Not a problem." He said and at that moment, she knew it was. She knew him and the last time she saw him, she left him with a broken heart. Actually, shattered would be a better fit. She stared into those eyes and sighed, not being able to continue this.
"No, it is." she said and placed her foot on the chair, between his legs and pushed him away so she could slide off gently and leave. However, he stood up and approached so she couldn't move. She met his eyes and he seemed somewhat stunned as he looked into her eyes glimmering darkly. "You should have never known me and I can't have you deliver my baby." She said and he didn't move, as if that was his way of arguing with her. "Plus, my husband would object and he's really not to be fucked with." She added, not being able to better control her anger, and then Steven hesitantly stepped away to let her leave, as if he really couldn't believe was he was seeing and hearing.
He didn't say a word; he just watched her open the door to his office.
Nikolai stepped into view and looked at her, looking at her expression and then looking over her head at Steven with an arched eyebrow and an accusing expression in his eyes.
"You must be the father." Steven said nervously, after a few seconds of silence and Clara stood still in the doorway as Nikolai answered him.
"Babysitter." He said with a serious tone of voice, although he was sort of playing around. Then, he seemed to have not noticed Clara closing her eyes and sighing with annoyance. It was funny the first time, but now she just wanted to smack him and crush something now that she was on the edge of full rage.
Steven was silent for a brief moment and just as Clara was about to push past Nikolai, his soft voice filled the silence smoothly.
"Just what is your husband? The mob? Why can't I deliver your baby, Clara?" he asked and she clenched her jaw, glancing over her shoulder with a dark grin, annoyance hidden underneath.
"He's worst and because I said so." She said with that grin darkly turning to a smile and Nikolai moved slightly enough for her to walk out. He continued to stare at Steven accusingly and then followed her out.
