Chapter 27: Unity

Around another corner, they tensed as they neared the gate. Huang turned the wheel sharply and they were pelting along another deserted alleyway. The sky outside was a dull colour that reflected the emotions of the occupants in the van. A few stars twinkled, trying to match the one in the centre but with not much success. The star of KS917 glittered menacingly, once again becoming the centre of attention as it turned pure black.

Hei reached for the key tucked beneath his shirt, it was glowing as well, as if reacting to the light in the sky. He had found out that everytime it glowed, something seemed to happen to Ying, and her star. He only hoped that she was okay.

At last, they came to a stop and they all quickly got off.

"What you gonna do now?" Huang asked, taking a cigarette out of his pocket.

"I'm going in." Hei replied simply.

Yin placed her finger in a bottle of water, and said " I can't trace her."

"I'll find her myself."

"We'll deal with the syndicate, you concentrate on getting her back." Huang said.

Hei smiled, despite Huang always complaining about contractors, he could tell that he still cared about his team.

"Good luck, Hei." Mao said.

"Arigatou. Sayonara, Yin, Mao, Huang."

I crashed into the wall, resting my back against the stone wall. My chest was singing with pain, a black flame was burning deep inside.

"Get a grip on yourself, we can't do anything like this."

I gritted my teeth as I straightened up, regaining my grip on Kuro Sakura. Disgruntled, I swished it at my dress and instantly the fabric fell, leaving it only going up to my knees. Then I wripped my at my sleeves, leaving only the end hanging loosely down my arms. Sprinting on, I clutched at my chest, trying to maintain my breathing.

Where are they?

"How do I know? Just look around."

Although I felt like my whole body was thrown into a pot of boiling water, I had managed to get out of the cell that they kept me in. I am quite greatful that at least the Shinigami's power was still usable but it still pained me deeply. By now I was running along a deserted corridor, with pratically no idea where I was going whatsoever.

As I rounded the corner, a guard gazed at me with a surprised expression which became a mask that remained on his face as the front blade of the scythe sliced through him.

"You shouldn't have done that, you could have at least asked where they were."

Shut up! I don't have time.

I approached a door, it was emitting a bright blue light. With baited breath, I placed my free hand on the handle, and pushed.

Inside, was the man who had knocked me unconscious.

We were standing inside a great chamber with very high ceilings. Two statues were standing facing each other, one was dressed in elegant robes which was dotted here and there with shiny diamonds. A halo was perched on top of his hand. He was holding a shield and in his other hand, held a pointed sword that was directed to the figure opposite him. The black cloak trailed downwards and dragged on the floor, the curved scythe swung forwards to meet the sword. The shinigami faced his enemy, the angels. On the floor below them, was a black star etched deeply into the ground. It was giving off the strange blue light.

"I've heard about your escape, Sendo Erika." The man said as he turned to me.

"What do you want to achieve?" I rasped, clasping at my chest again. Looks like the closer I am to him, the more this bond hurts like hell.

He seemed to ignore my question, and went on "You have found me, just like your predecessor did to mine. This is history over again."

"The battle between us dates back to more than centuries now, with each unable to rid the other. But this shall end today. While the past masters have failed, I will be the one to end the last in line."

"Who are you?" I asked cautiously.

"I am...how about just call me God?" he replied playfully. He quickly drew his hands out of his pockets and directed his left at me. A great jolt of pain burst through the curse on my chest and raced itself to the deepest corners of my whole body. This was great, I thought sarcastically as my knees gave way and my body crashed forwards. I couldn't even move, let alone use my ability. My face was pressed against the cold hard stone floor, I could hear his magically magnified footsteps making their way towards me.

"GET UP!"

I know that!

I struggled, trying to summon enough energy into my throbbing mind.

He kneeled down and grasped me by the collar, pinning me hard against the back wall. He drew a short katana from behind his back and pointed it at my neck, inches away from the bare skin. I tried to move, even wiggle or anything but nothing responded to my commands.

"Now, should I end your life? No, I need to torture you before I do that." His gripped slackened slightly, but then instantly became firm once more.

"But then again, BK201 is coming. Perhaps it might be easier to get the violin in exchange for your dead body." He cackled like a maniac.

Hei? Why was he coming? No, I can't let anyone else fall into danger. I have to kill this guy.

Shinigami, I accept your deal. Get him killed and you take my soul.

"That was what I was planning all along."

...

"What?"

Nothing. Give me your power.

The katana came crashing forwards, it was near. It was going to pierce my neck.

A few drops of blood dribbled to the floor, forming a small puddle here and there. Her neck was whole, the blade was caught in her right hand, pushing it away from her.

"Finally getting serious, are we?" The man danced back, holding his katana in a fighting stance.

I looked at my bloodied hand and smiled, that was nice for a start.

"We'll see about that." I said, returning his grin as I grabbed a black blade in each hand.

Rushing towards him, I drew both hands backwards and then swung both at him, forming a cross in front of my black dress. He jumped back easily with just one hand holding the hilt of his katana.

"Is this all you can do?" came his jeering voice.

I couldn't be bothered to answer and jumped back. Lunging forwards again, I tried to hit his blind spot, but with not much success either. I let the blades form Kuro Sakura, I suppose I am just more use to a scythe. Swinging up over my head, I aimed the blade at his neck which he managed to duck under just in time before it cut him.

My eyes glowed red as I tried to create a black hole to make him dissapear. The darkness materialized, but then it perished just as quickly as it had come. Another great burst of pain flooded through my chest and I leaned on my weapon for support. Why? Why can't I overcome this stupid bind?

I was dragged to my feet and pinned to the wall once again, not even the shinigami could save me now. I was drained of power. Eyes closing, I wondered why it ended up like this? Why couldn't I just have a normal life? In fact, working for the syndicate didn't seem as bad as this. My body was limped as all hope was replaced by despair.

This is the end...right?

"YING!"
