Dark in my Imagination
Crowley's anger burned, but he was patient. He listened to Gabriel with a smug look on his face while keeping Juliet nearby; ready to strike and rip out his grace, ready to devour it and snuff the Hell out of it.
He claimed he met Clara as a baby and took away her mother's memory of him being around. This infuriated Crowley, but he also wanted to know if Gabriel was around, why didn't he try to kill Clara?
"I was there when she thought of killing her daughter and I talked her out of it." Gabriel said and Crowley narrowed his eyes.
"The beginning please." He said coldly and Gabriel's lips twitched into a half grin.
"When she was born, the angels felt something was wrong and it was Balthazar that was the closest one to discovering what she was. That is, until I detoured his attention and took a peak myself.
"I realized what had happened: Hell had found its way into humanity, to destroy it from the inside out. When I entered the house, the moment I stepped foot into a nursery, I could sense that darkness. I expected something horrible and typically ugly for a demon," Gabriel said with a grin as Crowley narrowed his eyes once more at the insult. "But when I looked down at that little face inside the crib, sleeping peacefully, I couldn't see anything demonic. I saw humanity at its best; its innocence.
"Even as I tried to get the demon within Little Clara to react to my grace, when she opened her eyes, she didn't cry or show any hatred in those stunning little eyes. She was beautiful and I couldn't see how she was worthy of the death penalty. She was part human. How could I allow the angels to disregard that if they knew?" He said and Crowley studied him closely to see if he was telling the truth. It appeared that the angel was sensitive and compassionate underneath it all. Either that or he really was the master of deceit. If that was the case, then he was good, but not better than Crowley.
When Gabriel remained silent, the mischief in his eyes told Crowley that he knew very well he was studying him. However, Crowley didn't care. A demon can't change the color of his essence; he can't stop analyzing others and he wouldn't stop studying Gabriel even if the douchebag was annoyed with it. Too bad. What was the feathered prick to do? Strike the King of Hell in his own home? Talk about suicide.
However, Gabriel continued with a slight grin on his lips, as if this amused him.
"I later dropped in and convinced her mother that I was there to help. She understood taking Clara away, but I intended on moving them around and somewhere out of Balthazar's reach, which was damned near impossible if I wasn't also the Trickster.
"After she realized that I wasn't taking Clara away, I could see she was about to blow and when she was ready to break down, I told her that in her daughter was a drop of herself; a human with a good heart and a spirit of innocence. A child like this can't be condemned solely based on her other half; a half she had no control over.
"It was going alright, until Clara's dark side showed for the first time. She fed her mother's hamster to a snake that slivered into the back yard, simply out of curiosity. Her mother broke down and that night, she tried to kill Clara with a bread knife, but couldn't." Gabriel said and there, Crowley had a red flag go up in his mind. Something wasn't right. Clara didn't see Gabriel in her memory. If he tried so hard to keep Clara alive, why wasn't he there at that moment? What was he doing? Just standing by, watching and hoping the old hag would make the right choice? Watching humanity's free will at its best? What bullshit.
"You weren't there." Crowley said coldly and Gabriel narrowed his eyes, revealing a sort of anger in his mischief.
"And neither were you, so shut up and let me explain." He said and when Crowley's expression didn't change, although he was put off, Gabriel remained silent for a second and then continued. "It was then that Clara began sensing my grace and feeling threatened. She began lashing out at me to protect herself, so I kept a distance between us and simply projected an illusion of myself there for her mother to see, in hopes she would remember what I said.
"The second she released the thought of hurting her daughter and entered that kitchen, I was there and made her promise me she never would try again." he said and Crowley couldn't help but to give his input.
"Or else the angel will do… what, exactly?" he asked and Gabriel narrowed his eyes, not appreciating this question. "A penance? Thirty prayers and all is forgiven?" he added and Gabriel clenched his jaw.
"She'd go to Hell and once there, face the source of Clara's demonic half if not be tortured by it." he replied and when Crowley said nothing, that anger flared in his eyes again. "Killing children was never something Dad took lightly and we were supposed to do something if it ever happened. Most of the angels stopped caring when Dad hit the road, but I still cared.
"I wasn't going to let Clara die just because she was a Cambion. She's still half human." He said and, at that moment, Crowley's lips broadened in a dark grin.
"You sure about that?" he asked and Gabriel glared with dark eyes of his own.
"Not since you poisoned her." he said and Crowley let out a deep and low chuckle as if he found that to be amusing. "You entranced the demon within and took away the chance for her human half to decide for itself; to live freely." He added and Crowley just smirked.
"I gave her safety. She never felt safe or loved and at least she felt that once she met me." Crowley said and Gabriel clenched his jaw, as if this angered him. "She didn't belong among the humans; she knew it. I knew it.
"She felt threatened and she certainly wasn't free. She returned to the same apartment, plastered with sigils to protect herself, and never going any further than the town she was in." he said and enjoyed the rage in Gabriel's eyes.
At that moment, he could feel her drawing closer and his smirk only grew wider.
"If you don't believe me, why don't you ask her?" he said and lifted his eyes up to the office door as the knob turned.
