Kill of the Night

As soon as they were out of the hospital and back on the street, Clara's face was so full of anger and the second she balled her fists tightly, the windows of cars down the street began shattering as dents began mysteriously appearing in the metal of those same cars. Trash cans were virtually crushed, spilling garbage into the streets that caught on fire spontaneously. At the same time, the sky turned dark and there was even a strike of lightening with a deafening thunder that made the people cower for shelter. That lightening struck a tree down the street, lighting it on fire and causing the electricity to flicker for a few seconds.

As Nikolai glanced around, the windows of the hospital and nearby buildings began cracking and he expected them to break, but they stopped. He glanced back at Clara and could see the anger still remained. She was breathing hard like she had just hit someone with a fully loaded punch.

He glanced up at the people who had stepped out of their shelter and began walking around, looking at the cars with confusion. No one seemed to suspect her, but he watched them closely. After the angels appearing at the bar the night of the deal with Anne Cromwell, he knew Clara had to be protected like she never had been before. He gently placed a hand around her waist and guided her onward to a safe place down the street. It was a small café with a patio on the side. They sat down in the shade and he ordered her a cup of herbal tea.

When she kept her eyes low, hands on her lap, he knew something was bothering her. It was that Steven guy.

"Who is he?" he asked and when she lifted her eyes to meet his, there was nothing dark. He could see human emotions dancing in her eyes, making them look cloudy as if she wasn't mentally paying attention to him.

"I dated him twenty years ago. I looked about his age, but I was really old enough to be his mother. We met at a secret place for teens to hang out and drink." She said and he could see her eyes becoming distant as if she was looking back on her memories of him. "He was cute and he made me feel… human." She said and it was as if she was talking to herself.

"What happened?" Nikolai asked and she came back, but not completely as if she was too busy seeing those memories.

"For the first time, I was feeling more human than demon and I liked it. I felt I was supposed to be more human, so I kept seeing him. Eventually, it was getting serious and I wanted to keep feeling human, so I allowed our relationship to go that far." Clara said and at that moment, sadness crept over her face. "Ever know what happens when a Cambion pushes away her demonic side?" she asked with a hint of sadness in her voice and Nikolai remained silent, staring at her intensely. "It bursts through at the first moment you feel annoyed, angry, hurt or afraid. Even if it's just a little bit." She added and her eyes became cloudy again. "He proposed to me in the park the night of our seven month anniversary.

"It was romantic, but I knew I couldn't be with him. Those last few weeks were torturous because I had that reality haunting me, even at night. The demon in me wanted out of my human's shadow by telling me that I didn't belong with him in my dreams. They were nightmares. Not only that, but I had been sensing something and my instincts told me it was a threat. I had never stayed in one place for long, let alone seven months. That night, at that moment, I had sensed it again and not only did I have to leave Steven, but whatever was threatening me. So, I tried to gently tell him no, but he wouldn't accept my rejection.

"I couldn't take it and it was then that there was a light glowing in Steven's eyes. I looked into it and saw what I knew to be an angel. It was then that the branches on the trees around us began shattering and one nearly fell on him. The angel faded back into him and he got out of the way just in time and looked up at me with terror in his eyes. I couldn't hide the demon within and then the street lights glowed so brightly that they shattered too and everything went dark and silent.

"The angel returned and took over Steven, threatening me. I still don't understand to this day, but that angel left and Steven asked me if I was okay, despite his fear of me. I could still see the fear on his face from the moonlight. It was at that moment I couldn't take it anymore and I ran out of the park and locked myself up in my apartment, crying.

"I knew I had to pack my things and leave. But the next morning, when I was on my way out of town, he found me. He stopped me and demanded an explanation. He still loved me, but I could see that fear in his eyes. I couldn't tell him what I was, so I did the best thing I could think of: break his heart." Clara said and her eyes began watering as she relived the moment in her memories.

"I told him I was something he could never understand and his love for me was never going to be enough. No matter what he did, he would never understand me and get over that fear of me. He was just a pitiful boy and I deserved a man that could handle me and give me all of the things that I needed.

"It wasn't easy because it was the truth, but for the first time since I met him, I let the demon take the lead and it had no difficult in hurting him. I could see the pain in his eyes and I didn't care. Then I left and never saw him again, never saw anyone again. I knew I didn't belong with a human. Love was for idiots, although it was the one thing I desperately wanted. I never allowed the human in me to feel such dreadful emotions. I chose to be a demon instead." Clara concluded and a tear finally formed in her eyes, but she never allowed it to fall down her cheek.

Nikolai remained silent, but reached his hand across their table and placed it in front of her, offering comfort. She lifted her eyes up to him, eyes still full of tears that she refused to release and gave him a soft smile, finally putting a hand on the table and placing over his, squeezing it lightly.

"That's how Crowley got me, you know." She said and Nikolai half grinned. "The bastard slipped into my apartment while I was sleeping and charmed me seductively. It was hard to say no." she added and then he gave her a full grin.

"Yeah, sounds like something he'd do." he said and her herbal tea finally arrived, but she didn't seem to have an interest for it. She released Nikolai's hand and glanced around. "About the angel that possessed Steven, you say he was casted out?" he asked and Clara nodded without looking at him. "Only the one the angel possesses can cast it out." he added and Clara remained silent as she realized that Steven must have cast the angel out, knowing that she was in danger. He really loved her, but that changed nothing. She didn't belong in his world.

As Nikolai could see a hint of sadness returning to her expression, he decided to call it quits for the both of them. She was probably thinking that it might have just worked between her and Steven. He didn't want her to be trapped in that sadness, he wanted her to look at what she had; at what made her happy.

"How about we call it a day and head home?" he asked her and she nodded her head without looking back at him again.

"I hate it here anyway." She mumbled and he tried not to let out a small laugh as he stood up. He helped her up and she snapped her fingers. They were back in Hell and she seemed better already. The sadness was fading and that darkness, that authority of a Queen was returning.

She truly did chose to be a demon rather than a human and not just because she was Queen of Hell.

Then, she also frowned and worry brewed in her eyes.

"What?" he asked her and she stalked off without him, pretty quickly for a pregnant woman. It wasn't until a few seconds later that he felt it.

There was an angel in Hell!

They quickly got to the office and Clara gripped the doorknob and turned it, as Ginger appeared and trotted over with a piercing expression in her eyes, sensing her owner's anger and worry.
