Chapter 29: Sayonara
"Gomen Hei." The last sane thing I was ever to say.
Her attire started to change. She let out a great howl as she tore herself from his grasp. The locket with the snapped chain lay innocently on the floor, almost as if it had nothing to do with the sudden change. The black, torn dress started to refine itself into a black short dress with a line of lace perching beneath her neck which a black ribbon was forming around. Dark, long gloves and socks cascaded down her form and she almost became still as kuro heeled boots fitted themselves around her feet. She arched her back once again as wings burst from her back, still curved towards her.
At last, all was still.
Ying rose to a standing position, drawing herself to her full height. She drew her left hand beside her and Kuro Sakura materialized, ane the dual scythe was accompanied by the five floating blades. They danced around their owner, daunting the others present in the room.
"Isn't it nice to be finally let out?" She drawled. Her voice was layered with a kind of deepness that accompanied her usual tone. She yawned and stretched, looking like a butterfly that was finally let out of its cocoon it was trapped in for so long.
Ying turned to the man and said "You have caused me quite a lot of trouble." She flexed her arms, as if getting ready for battle.
"My pleasure, Fallen Angel." The man replied and bowed low. "For how long have you been asleep?"
"Oh, not long. Just long enough to... tinker with her mind." She continued.
Hei stared at the two, just a minute ago one was trying to take the others life, and now they were just casually talking. He wasn't really sure what to do, should he just grab Ying and turn back? Or should he kill this man? What was happening? Hei noticed that the man's hand was itching towards his katana, and yet Ying was still standing there vulnerably.
"That's enough for the talk now." the man whispered quietly.
"I suppose so." Ying confirmed.
Both of them jumped two steps back from each other, readying for the fight.
"To be honest, I feel regretful. In other circumstances, we could have become friends." Ying said sympathatically.
He didn't reply, but instead sprinted forwards. Hand rising in the air with the katana still gripped tightly, he brought it crashing down to Ying's undefended figure.
But it stopped.
It didn't go through the air, instead it was paralyzed although he was putting as much force as he dared. A barrier of air was blocking him and his target.
"Did you think that would really work?" Ying sneered, starting to direct her blades. They shot forwards towards the target, and followed him as he flexed and pranced into the air, wanting to dodge. She laughed shrilly as she acknowledged his attempt. Spreading her arms wide out, she performed like a conductor and the blades zoomed around doing their work.
When his mobility started to decrease, she grabbed the scythe and sprinted towards him. He only just managed to block her uncoming attack with his katana, but he was gradually being pushed back by the force of impact. With another blow, his defense was broken and Ying saw her chance. Directing the front blade around his waist, she pulled with all her might. He jumped into the air with speed that was inhumane, and a smile spread across his face as he thought he had successfully gotten away.
However, it was Ying's turn to smile as she conducted the soaring blades to pierce his body which was suspended in mid air, making him unable to dodge.
At last, they returned to their owner. He lay sprawled on the floor, bleeding to the end of winter.
She stood above him, a manic grin on her face.
As she knelt down, she said "Nice attempt." She reached towards the left, and grabbed Kuro Sakura from thin air and curved the blade in front of his neck.
"How does it feel to have a knife at your throat?" Ying hissed quietly.
A second later, his body was headless. His soul lingered in the air, wanting to taunt his killer, though it did little effect. It seemed so ironic, that he had kept her imprisoned for so long, and yet she took his life in the blink of an eye. Blue orbs rose playfully into the air surrounding his lifeless form, and moved towards their new owner.
Her black eyes shone scarlet as her wings opened to their full extent.
"YES!" She screamed her delight and spread her wings out, letting out a disgusting and evil guffaw.
"Ying?..." Hei said uncertainly.
The figure slowly turned around to face him.
"Ying?" She said somewhat spitefully. "Don't call me by such a low-life name. I am the God of Death, the Shinigami!" She gave another laugh, a merthless echo in the chamber.
She peered at him for quite a long time before continuing "Just in time. I need someone to...test my new powers out." She said the last phrase with a manic grin etched onto her face. Readying herself, she took a fighting stance.
Hei doubled back, he couldn't bring himself to fight Ying. Not the girl he had grown up with, not the one who he had gone on missions with, not the one that he...
Before he could react, Ying sprang towards him and raised her weapon high up into the sky.
But, she crashed forwards. The two fell to the ground. Hei was sprawled on the floor and Ying was sitting on top of him. "Stupid remuneration." she breathed out through ragged breaths. She gave a smile, and he noticed that fangs slowly extended. Bending down, she sent them into his flesh. Hei winced as he felt red hot liquid flow out. The figure didn't seem to mind, and instead took it in fiercly.
At last, she straightened up, wiping a trickle of blood from her pointed teeth. She gave him another wicked smile, holding Kuro Sakura over his neck.
"Good bye."
The blade was coming, it was going to severe his neck. Hei closed his eyes as he faced his fate. Images of Bai, missions, Huang, Mao, Yin, and Ying whizzed past his eyes. He couldn't bring himself to block, not her. How ironic it seemed, to be killed by someone he had treasured for so long.
But it didn't come.
His eyes fluttered open as the weight on him was instantly lifted. As he sat upright, he realized that the figure was paralyzed in mid air, unable to move.
"Wha... what is...happening?" She rasped. A shimmering white figure was slowly appearing before Hei, in front of Ying. The key that around Hei's neck glowed pure white radiently.
Hei, leave it to me. Go.
"Ying? No!"
The white shadow embraced her, and she was instantly bound by a curse. The black hole was already starting to suck her into abyss. But as she did so, the light was also merged with her.
"YING!"
He knew it was already too late.
Ying's paralyzed face was slowly moved into a smile. A painful and regretful gesture. She was becoming free of her bonds, and she moved forwards and took his mask off. Hei had a good glimpse of her face while a tear slowly trickled down.
"Forget me, Hei." She whispered.
"Why? No!" Hei replied. He moved forwards and took her in his arms.
"Because Li Yuxing, Ying doesn't exist."
"Because Sendo Erika doesn't exist anymore."
With that, all was lost. Hei, stood alone in the dark chamber, with only the last echos of her final words.
...
Me: I don't know what to say...
Mao: this isn't the last chapter though, there is going to be an epilogue after this.
