Okay so I totally intended to spread out the reveal of NJ's primary and secondary forms into different chapters but it just wouldn't work that way so have them both and a time skip. Also I've been in an extreme "don't want to write anything" mood and only just remembered at least three of my stories have chapters saved up.
Thank you to Mira SeverusSirius Black-Snape for being the only reviewer last chapter!
Of Dragons and Wyvern Too Chapter 8
NJ took a drink of hot tea with a frown. The cold had mostly passed its course by now, but his throat was still sore and he kept feeling stuffy. Oh, and the sneezing. He hated the sneezing.
"Hey Boss?"
"Yeah Enny?" Jack looked up from where he was fiddling with a small machine.
"Do you want to keep looking for those Shen Gon Wu things?"
Jack paused and thought. "…Yeah, actually. I do. Not so I can take over the world or anything, but because…" He shrugged. "I don't know. I guess because it's become a part of me by now. If that makes any sense."
NJ nodded to himself. "It does, at least to me." There was silence for a few minutes as NJ gathered his thoughts. "You're getting out of the chair tomorrow."
"And?" Jack raised an eyebrow. NJ didn't bring stuff up unless it was important. He didn't have the patience for small talk.
"Just bringing it up." He looked Jack in the eye. "Crutches are too slow. I have an idea as to how to help you get around."
"Oh?"
"It involves primary form."
"…Really?" Jack grinned hopefully. With that any reluctance inside Enny melted away and he relaxed.
"Yes. Though I won't show you primary until tomorrow," He warned. "I just need to show you secondary today. Shifting to primary requires going to secondary form first."
"Makes sense." Jack nodded, grin still there.
"So…" NJ shook his head and scowled. "Why am I being nervous about this?"
With that he began to grow.
Not by much, just a handful of inches, but enough to show that his secondary form was considered 'older' than his human form. Bones creaked and Jack made a slight face as soft lime green scales seemed to sprout from his skin in a rather nasty looking way. Oddly enough his hair stayed, though a pair of curled horns grew out of them. Amusingly they curled up in the air and back down in a funny 'z' shape.
His nose extended and his face shifted into more of a snout instead of a human shape, though his eyes were still facing forwards. Nostrils flared as (Jack assumed) his senses were boosted and his pupils gained a barely there slit shape to them. Claws grew on his hands and… his shoes disappeared? They melted away as if they were an illusion and his feet lengthened so that he balanced on his (now clawed) toes instead of his heels. His legs shifted shape appropriately, making up half of the crackling sounds.
The strangest thing (and the other half of the crackling) was his spine extending out right at his tailbone, (obviously) turning into a tail. For a moment Jack could see the bone itself before it was covered in skin and then scales. It grew and grew… Then grew some more. And more. More until NJ's tail was twice as long as he was tall, giving him a strange posture as he took a moment to get used to balancing it with his body.
Similarly to his shoes, his shorts melted to a style that fit around the base his tail.
"So…" Enny raised a scaled eyebrow at him curiously.
"Dude, what happened to your shoes?" Jack couldn't resist. "And your shorts?"
"Another mystery of wyvern." NJ shrugged with a scowl. "It got to the point that my mom literally banned my dad from trying to figure it out because he was giving himself fits. The closest he got was that it goes to a sort of pocket dimension."
"That. Is. Awesome." Jack grinned widely. Enny gave a cautious smile back. "Dude, I'm serious! You look awesome!"
"You'll say the same tomorrow." He rolled his eyes, snark on full blast.
"Maybe but this is still really cool."
"If you say so. The shift doesn't take that long actually, though it takes longer the first few times. I just made it go slow so you could see it all. When we're really going we can shift from human to secondary right to primary in about three seconds. One for the adults who are more skilled at it."
Jack was too busy staring at the sharp teeth that were visible when NJ talked. "Dude… are you guys carnivores?"
"Yes." He nodded. "We can survive on an omnivore, and in extreme cases insectivore, diet if necessary but meat is the healthiest food for us."
"I thought you enjoyed that hamburger just a little too much." Jack teased as Enny scowled darkly at him. "But really dude, you should have told me!"
"The problem with it is that meat usually tastes horrible unless raw. The hamburger was a surprising exception." NJ sank into the workbench he was sitting on with a mutter, shifting oddly to sit on his hip to avoid his tail. "And humans don't like that."
"Dude, you're talking to the guy who's favorite Wu was the Monkey Staff. I get it. I still think you should have told me." Jack shook his head, putting that behind him because between them they could probably bicker for hours. "So are you hungry now? I mean, I've got stuff in my freezer we can probably thaw."
"You wouldn't mind?" NJ looked at him, mentally berating himself for not remembering this was Jack and he hadn't cared about any of the weird things going on with wyvern so far.
"No problem." Jack waved it off. "Now come on, to the kitchen!" He pointed his hand to the elevator lift leading up from his workshop with a dramatic pose. NJ snorted and walked ahead. His, quite frankly ridiculously so, long tail reached out behind him and pulled Jack's hoverchair along. "Dude, your tail is awesome too!"
"It's a pain. A long, sometimes useful pain."
"In the rear?" Jack snickered.
Enny gave him a deadpan glare.
Jack watched in fascination as NJ popped a cubed piece of steak in his mouth. The kid gave him a sidelong look.
"This cannot be that interesting, honestly."
"Dude, it totally is. You're barely even chewing!"
"I only have a few molars." NJ explained and opened his mouth surprisingly wide, having already swallowed the cube.
He tapped a few teeth towards the back of his mouth and Jack leaned in interestedly. Like he said, there were only six molars in his mouth (one on each side of his top jaw and two on each side of the bottom) and they were barely even identifiable as molars. They were still pointed a little bit.
"Wow, guess it's hard to chew."
Enny closed his mouth. "I only even have them from my human half. Most of my family doesn't have molars at all. Carnivores, remember? They don't generally need to chew."
"Cool."
"So you say."
Now that Jack knew what secondary form looked like, NJ spent all his time in that form. Apparently human form was uncomfortable if they were in it for too long. (Jack had really dug into him for that.)
It was with great excitement that Jack went to the hospital and FINALLY got that annoying cast off! Taking a while to get used to the smaller bandages and crutches, he was grateful to have NJ there to balance on every once in a while.
"To the alley." Enny pointed when Jack made to go to where his jet was parked once they'd left the hospital doors.
"…What?"
"Just do it."
Shrugging and doing as told, Jack hobbled in and nearly had a heart attack when he turned around and came face to face with slitted creamy green eyes.
"Enny?!" He realized they were at his eye level at the same time he saw soft lime green scales, larger horns, an absolutely massive pair of wings, and a friggin dragon in his face. "Dude! You just about gave me a heart attack!" He held a hand over his heart jokingly.
"…Sorry?" Jack jumped a little when NJ's voice sounded oddly… airy, as if echoing in a wind tunnel. Excuse the pun.
The albino took the next few moments to really look over his friend's natural state. Enny's actual body was almost as big as a small horse, but his crazily long tail and absolutely humongous wings made him look far bigger than he actually was. He had a rather thin neck and looking closely Jack could just barely see physical similarities to his human and secondary forms around his eyes. Oh, and he didn't have hair anymore, which for some reason really stood out to Jack.
"You weren't kidding when you said wyvern looked like western dragons." He said, impressed. "Seriously. What's the only difference?"
"This." Enny shifted his wings and Jack realized they weren't folded on his sides, but underneath him holding him up. "Western dragons: four legs and wings. Wyvern: Two legs and our arms are our wings. Makes walking in primary a huge pain."
"Yeah, I can see that. Totally see the 'Air' theme now." Jack nodded. "So what was your plan?"
NJ didn't say anything and seemed to suddenly grow bigger. Jack realized it was because he crouched down a lot while standing still as Enny reached his head over Jack. Grabbing him by the back of his shirt, Jack only just managed to snag his crutches before he was unceremoniously swung over and dropped on Enny's back.
"Just so you know, you're my Soul Guarded. You can climb on me any time you like while I'm in natural form. If you wish to sit on another wyvern you need to ask permission. They'll usually say yes, but only a Soul Guarded or mate can simply get on without asking. Not even close friends and family can." Enny lifted his head sharply in an almost sniff. "It's just rude. Not to mention rather strange feeling for the wyvern being climbed on."
"That whole thing sounded kind of off. I feel there's an inappropriate joke I could make somewhere in there." Jack rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"Please don't. I'm a Brithyr. I've heard and MADE all the dirty jokes one can get out of the wyvern."
Jack looked at him oddly. "You? Dirty jokes?"
"My mom is the adopted sister to a succubus. Brithyr tend to be dirty minded by default."
"A what?!"
Before Jack could ask any further he held on for life as NJ gathered himself up. This resulted in Jack getting lifted even higher in the air as he raised on his back legs and then spread his wings as much as possible. With how big they were and how small the alley was, this wasn't much.
One small, cramped half-flap somehow got them several floors up in the air. A few more and NJ balanced on the edge of the roof. Getting his balance surprisingly fast, he unfurled his wings fully.
"Oh my god." Jack gaped as he saw just how big NJ's wings were. Each was more than twice as big as Enny was!
One flap made them shoot into the air at lightning speed.
Jack couldn't think for a few minutes as air rushed around him and he held onto Enny's neck and back for dear life. It was amazing. The air howled around him and despite the speed they must have been going the air force didn't hurt at all. If anything, it seemed to gently brush by him.
They were flying straight up and gaining altitude at an alarming rate. Jack couldn't see Enny's head but could just feel the contentment rolling off him.
"OOOOHHHH MYYYYY GOOOOOOOD!" Jack yelled out in excitement.
NJ replied with a pleased roar, which shocked Jack for a moment but the albino grinned in response.
After a minute of breakneck speeds Enny eventually began to level out and slow down. Soon they were merely gliding through the air, the wyvern not having to flap his wings at all. The wind was now barely mussing Jack's hair and clothes they were going so slow. Jack decided to label this 'leisure speed'.
"Sorry about that. We have to get as high as possible as fast as possible so we can't be seen from the ground." Somehow he didn't even have to raise his voice to reply.
"That was amazing dude!" He couldn't help a hysterical laugh. "I felt like I was about to die for a bit there but it would have been the coolest way to die!" He blinked as he calmed down. "Wait… how am I not suffocating at this altitude? Planes usually fly up here. And how'd you get enough lift to clear the alley?"
Jack couldn't help the excitement in his voice. He was an engineer, and the number one thing about engineers was that they always wanted to know how something worked. The wyvern had proved to be amazing and mysterious, always throwing unsolvable problems at him.
It was awesome. Even if he used that word too much.
"Same way I won't have to flap to maintain my height despite the fact I'm gliding." If he weren't in the air Jack would swear Enny would have shrugged. "Air wyvern, Jack. The winds are our friends. Between how much air we get, the steering such long tails allow, how strong our wings are," Here Jack looked and saw that, yes, NJ's wing muscles were very very large. "And the wind itself helping us, it's no wonder we're unmatched in the sky. If it wouldn't get us revealed to humanity we'd probably race jets for fun."
The entire time Enny sounded so… happy. This usually wasn't a word one could associate with the stoic five year old but right now he definitely was.
Jack felt extremely guilty. Being with him on the ground for so long must have been horrible. He vowed to never keep NJ away from the skies again even unintentionally.
"Dude, I will totally race you in my jet."
For second Enny actually tilted in shock, Jack holding on tighter with a squeak he would later deny. "You… You know what, I won't even ask if you would actually do that. You'd be all too happy to do that." He sounded slightly dazed.
"Damn right." Jack said smugly.
Ha ha ignore any timeline inconsistancies I'm not really sure about how that's working out myself.
(Oh my god rereading this their interactions are so cute I can see why you guys ship Jackenny)
