Sign of the Times

Castiel was at the Men of Letter's bunker, trying to be useful to his friends, feeling bad for not being there when they needed his help. However, the Winchesters had just figured out what he couldn't and they needed to fill him in or else he'd never think of it.

"She's pregnant." Dean said and he watched as it sunk in. Then Castiel's face paled and he seemed worried. Yeah, they were all thinking the same thing: a Cambion pregnant with another, only this one might be slightly more demon than human, if that was scientifically possible, not that hunters gave a damn about science.

"This is not good." Castiel said and the brothers just looked at him as if they couldn't believe how slowly he joined the conversation. "It will be a complete disaster. Hell will be stronger than Heaven and Earth and nothing will be able to stop it." he added, looking grim. Sam and Dean exchanged glances and couldn't believe how quickly he crashed and burned with his pessimism. Obviously, this was really bad, but the baby wasn't born yet. They still had time to do something. The question was simply what would they do.

They were silent, but the brothers could tell that Castiel was thinking about something. When he lifted his eyes to theirs, they could see he was planning something and about to ask for their help.

"There must be another way to close Hell." Castiel said, looking at Sam. The trials weren't a good idea. They tried it and Sam would have died. There had to be another way. They all knew that, but what else was there?

"The Men of Letters have nothing. The angels have nothing. All we have are those trials that Sammy did." Dean replied and they fell silent again. They weren't about to repeat that. At that moment, Dean didn't feel like talking about it. There was always something wrong that they had to deal with. Why didn't they ever get something that made Heaven and Hell tremble with fear?

He got up and walked away. Castiel looked at Sam with confusion, but Sam couldn't blame his brother. This bullshit was getting to be exhausting.

"I'll check on him." Sam said and followed his brother, leaving Castiel standing there with nothing but the silence around him. He glanced around at the bunker, his mind unable to break away from the fact that Crowley had impregnated his Cambion Queen. That was the epitome of disaster.

As if eyes glanced over a mirror in the corner, he caught sight of a familiar face that puzzled him briefly. He walked up to it and he saw his reflection standing next to Gabriel who was grinning like he usually did.

"Hey Cassie." Gabriel said, but Castiel knew he had died long ago. Was this like last time? He was seeing him, but it wasn't real? Wasn't that due to Metatron? But he couldn't be behind this, not this time.

"Are you really dead?" Castiel asked again, and like the first time, Gabriel just smirked and remained silent.

"The Nephilim isn't dead." He said and Castiel recalled her. He killed her and Gadreel resurrected her when he broke Metatron's spell. He nodded and Gabriel's smirk lingered. "The angels should accept her. She might just be what they need to fight a fair fight." He said and Castiel titled his head, not quite seeing the possibility. He could accept her, but the angels? They're still very closed minded.

"The angels are no match for Clara and her child, even with the Nephilim." Castiel said and Gabriel shrugged his shoulders and grinned.

"They just need to get well structured. They need a leader that can sort them out and give a well thought-out plan." Gabriel said and Castiel gave a slight frown.

"This is very much like the last time we spoke." He said and Gabriel continued to grin. "Can this still be Metatron's trick?" he asked and Gabriel remained silent, then he stepped forward and appeared in front of Castiel.

"I can't keep torturing you." He said and extended his arms. "I faked my death again. But I'd prefer if this was our little secret." He added and Castiel seemed more confused than enlightened as Gabriel thought he'd be. He just slowly nodded, but maintained a frown of puzzlement. "So, we'll talk strategy?" he asked and Castiel just frowned.

"Why don't you lead the angels?" he asked and Gabriel smirked, rolled his eyes and let out a sharp chuckle.

"I skipped out long ago and –" he began, but Castiel cut him off.

"You're the last Archangel." He said and Gabriel was silent for a few seconds.

"Who walked out and became the Trickster. You're better suited for the job." Gabriel said and patted Castiel on the shoulder. "You have the bronze and I have the brains. Well… I actually have both, but the angels really want to look up to you. Give them a reason, one where you aren't trying to replace Dad." He added with a wink and then vanished before Sam's walked around the corner, looking somewhat defeated.

"I hate to break it to you Cas, but by time we figure something out, the baby will be born. I don't think there's much that us, humans, can do." Sam said, looking at Castiel with a hint of hope in his eyes, indirectly asking for Heaven to deal with this.

Castiel couldn't help but repeat Gabriel's words. Perhaps this was something that required the angels to get their act together. Although, that was going to be nearly impossible.
