Jane pulled up in front of the yellow tape and strode towards Frankie who was probably the one who got notified first as he was still filling out reports. She pulled her hair up into a messy ponytail and lifted up the tape to walk under; holding it up until Maura had passed underneath as well. They'd had to stop back at the precinct for her to pick up her medical bag as she was in such a hurry to get home with Jane that she'd forgotten it.
"Weren't you wearing a different shirt, Jane?" Frankie asked.
"Spilled water on it."
"Wouldn't it have just dried?"
"What have we got, Frankie?" she asked, ignoring his interrogation of her clothes. He turned, frowning in suspicion to a female's body lying on a park bench.
"Amanda Salk, 36. Homeless man over there," he pointed to a man talking to a uniformed officer; "comes to his usual bench for the night, but finds it occupied. He gives the person a shove to wake her up. She rolls onto her back and her eyes are wide open. He jumps back, because not only are her eyes open, but her throat also is."
"It's been slit from ear to ear, Jane," Maura piped in. Jane pulled on her gloves and carefully lifted off the pieces of newspaper that were covering the victim's body, revealing that she was only dressed in her underwear.
"Looks like whoever killed her tried to make her blend in with the other homeless people of the park by covering her with papers."
"I bet she's cold," Korsak said as he entered the crime scene, pointing at the near naked woman.
"She's dead, Korsak; she won't be worried if she's cold," Frankie explained.
"I bet she's still cold; temperature wise."
"Funny, old man," Jane said. "What took you so long?"
"I was feeding my dogs." Jane just smiled as she shook her head and crouched next to Maura who was examining the victim's arms and legs.
"What is it, Maur?"
"Look at this, Jane." She pointed to markings on her wrists and ankles like she'd been restrained.
"Another BDSM case?" Frankie asked.
"No, these markings aren't consistent with any BDSM products. They look more like the work of shackles."
"Like she'd been held prisoner?"
"I'm afraid so, Jane. Note also the definition of her ribcage and hip bones. It appears that she was being starved."
"Oh, my god," Jane mumbled as she stood up to face Korsak.
"What?" Frankie asked, a little confused.
"Maura, was she raped?" Maura gently parted the woman's legs to show abrasions and bruising.
"These marks indicate that she has; over a period of time, in fact. There are bruises here that are older than the rest." Jane turned back to Frankie to explain.
"About five years ago four women disappeared over a period of seven months. As soon as we found one woman raped, murdered and dumped somewhere, never the same place, another woman went missing."
"Did you catch him?"
"No, but all of a sudden the kidnapping and murders stopped. We don't know why. Maybe he got thrown in jail for some reason; maybe he just stopped to make us think he really had. Whatever it was, he obviously got bored and started again."
"Doc, do you know how long she had been held captive?"
"I'm afraid not, Vince. I'll need to get her back to the morgue before I can tell you anything else."
An hour later, Jane came down to the morgue with some information that she'd hope would match some of Maura's findings. "Hey, Maur," she said, walking into the morgue.
"Hello, Jane. Did you find anything out?"
"Yeah, Amanda Salk is a teacher and went missing three months ago."
"And nobody suspected anything?"
"She left to go on long service leave for four months so no one was worried when she didn't show up at work, 'cause she wasn't meant to."
"Well, I would estimate that she had been missing for around three months."
"Isn't estimating like guessing?"
"It's all your fault, Detective." Jane smiled smugly to herself before moving on.
"What makes you think three months?"
"I found out that she was pregnant, most likely to her captor."
"Well, she didn't have a boyfriend, so that'd be right."
"I don't think she's ever had a boyfriend." Jane frowned in confusion, so Maura pulled down the sheet to reveal the side of the victim's left breast with a small heart tattoo on it. "Lucy. You might want to see if she's still around."
"Got it. Anything else?"
"Yes; I found these." Maura lifted Amanda's arm to show gashes around her wrist.
"You think she tried to escape?"
"I would expect that anyway, but these look like they have been created from a constant strain on her wrists. I think she was strung up against a wall."
"Oh, god," Jane said under her breath. "Could she have been raped up there, too?"
"I found abrasions on her back that would indicate so."
"Like her back scraped against the wall every time he..."
"Yes, Jane."
"Okay, thanks, babe. Call me if you find anything else." Jane left a kiss on the top of the doctor's head and headed back upstairs.
The elevator dinged open and Jane stomped out towards BRIC, passing Korsak along the way. "Korsak, there was never any motive found for why this guy did this, was there?"
"No; he's a psychopath. He doesn't need a motive."
"I think there might be. Frankie!" she yelled, bursting through the doors to BRIC.
"Yep?"
"Did Amanda know a Lucy?"
"Yeah; Lucy Barker; a teacher at the same school as Amanda until she requested a transfer five months back and moved to Indiana. Apparently they were good friends, according to other work colleagues."
"Amanda had a tattoo of her name, so I'm going to say they were dating, Frankie."
"So, Amanda takes a trip two months later to get over her girlfriend, and ends up dead. Why?"
"Frankie, bring up the old case files. Now check if the other women were in relationships."
"Two were engaged to women, but according to friends and family, the other two were also gay."
"There's your motive, Korsak."
"This sicko's attacking lesbians? Can you say 'homophobe'? But how would he know if they were gay? I mean, one was a nurse, one a dog walker, one a lawyer and the other an interior decorator," Korsak read over Frankie's shoulder. "It's not like they were in the same circles."
"No, but they were all married or getting married. They would've had to register," Jane deduced.
"What about Miss Salk? Was she engaged to this Lucy?" Frankie typed for a few moments and then answered Korsak's question.
"No, but she was engaged to a woman named Beth Carlton a few years ago, but Miss Carlton died in a car crash a few months before the wedding." Frankie pulled up a news article about how Beth Carlton and her brother had died driving in a rainstorm.
"So, she too would have had to register."
"What are you getting at, Jane? So they registered, so what?"
"That means that it would be on record."
"Which means that anyone in... the government, really, could access it."
"Yeah," Jane mumbled as she rubbed her eyes.
"Jane!" Maura called as she approached BRIC. Jane spun around at her girlfriend's sweet voice, bumping into an officer which she noticed was the same one she'd bumped into earlier that day when she was racing to meet Maura in the bathroom.
"Oh, sorry Officer," she looked at his name badge, "Brian. And I'm sorry I ran into earlier today."
"Nah, it's alright Detective." Jane waited until he went back to his filing before meeting Maura at the door.
"I have the autopsy report for you," Maura smiled at the group of detectives, giving an extra cheeky one to her girlfriend.
"Thanks, babe."
"Why don't we look at this tomorrow," Korsak said taking the report from Maura. "It's late and I'm sure we'll all appreciate a good sleep before starting on this again."
"Sounds good," Frankie said as she stood up from his chair, groaning a little. "I'm getting too old," he joked. Korsak whacked him playfully over the head and walked out to the elevator. Jane wrapped her arm around Maura's shoulders and pulled her close for a kiss as they followed the two men out.
A/N So I got this idea for a crime when I was wondering how Jane and Maura might rescue each other, so please stick with me :) xo
