"Alright, Dr Isles; you're all good to go," Maura heard her doctor say. She didn't see him, though, as her eyes had drifted shut again. All she cared about was the arm she was clinging onto and the fingers laced with hers. She nodded and then felt Jane stand up and begin to push her out of the hospital. They'd kept her in overnight; that's what Jane had told her when she woke up, but she didn't remember any of it. She could recall the day before when she was in the back of Susie's car in a heap tucked under Jane's arm. She was hurting so much, but felt so tired at the same time.
She supposed she'd fallen asleep, or fallen unconscious not long after, only feeling Jane lift her out of the car when they arrived at the hospital and later that night, she heard someone singing to her. Singing... Jane was singing to her. "I didn't know you could sing, Jane," she mumbled, but no one heard her. She heard the noises of the hospital around her and figured that she probably looked terrible, all slumped over and tired in a wheelchair, so she sat up. She groaned under the pain, and then Jane was beside her with her hand on her knee.
"Honey, you okay?" Maura nodded and licked her dry lips. Jane kissed her forehead and stepped back up behind the wheelchair and continued pushing. Soon enough, the sun was warming her skin and then she was beside Jane's car. "Come on, sweetheart. Hop up," Jane encouraged, standing in front of Maura with her hands on her knees. But the sun was so nice and toasty and she really didn't want to leave.
"No," she said, and turned in her wheelchair to curl up and fall asleep.
"Maura, baby," Jane started, making Maura crack open one eye. "Let's get in the car and then we can have a hot bath when we get home." Maura sighed a deep and surrendering sigh and then held out her arms like a toddler for Jane to help her up. "Oh, god; you remind me of when I was a kid and I was sick."
"How so?" Maura asked once she was standing and had her arms wrapped around Jane's neck. The tall brunette backed Maura into the passenger seat, and waited until she was sitting before crouching down in front of her.
"Because whenever Ma walked by my room, I'd whack my arms out like a zombie and go "Maaaa, hug meeee"," she whined. "Even when I was fourteen." Maura chuckled as she swung her legs around and buckled herself in, wincing slightly when she reached over her body to lock in the seat belt. Maura had a few moments while Jane pushed the wheelchair back to the front desk of the hospital, so she pulled down the sun visor and looked in the mirror behind it. She had red swollen eyes, a bruised cheek - probably from where Officer Brian had slapped her incredibly hard, and her hair was a mess.
"Oh, god," she groaned as Jane got back into the car.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Jane asked, feeling extremely concerned.
"My hair; it's disgusting."
"Oh, my god, Maura," Jane chuckled. "If you weren't bruised from head to toe, I'd slap you right now." Maura laughed along as Jane started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Maura placed her hand over onto Jane's lap as she drove; even though it hurt a little to stretch her arm that far. Jane noticed and placed her hand on top of Maura's and worked her thumb under Maura's hand until they were holding. Maura relaxed back into the seat but kept her eyes open, fearing that she'd fall asleep again.
She tried again to remember yesterday, but most of it was a blur. She'd been in her hospital bed with a drip in her arm, making sure she was still getting nutrients. Jane was by her side, rubbing her fingertips over Maura's open hand; around her palm and down between her fingers. A deep soothing song vibrated out of Jane's mouth and played across Maura's shoulder where Jane rested her head. She couldn't recall what song it was, just the love and loyalty that Jane put into it.
The feelings that bubbled up inside of her when Jane was singing to her, felt better than all of the sex and intimate moments that she had ever experienced, even with Jane. Knowing that when she needed it most, someone would find her and love her and never leave her side, just as she had done whenever Jane was hurt...
"Jane, you got shot!" Maura exclaimed.
"I'm fine, Maura. I'm fine, really," Jane assured, looking over at Maura. The blonde dug her fingernails into Jane's thigh. "Ow, Maura."
"Jane, what happened?"
"I got shot at and the bullet hit me in the ribs, but I was wearing my vest, so I'm okay; just a little bruised, that's all." Jane gave Maura a loving smile, enjoying how they were being so concerned with each other.
"I just... Don't do that again," Maura whispered.
"What? My job? Or saving the goddamn love of my life?" Jane asked sarcastically.
"Risk your life for m-" Maura froze and looked over at the brunette. "I'm the love of your life?"
"Yes. Aren't I yours?"
"Of course you are, Jane; I just... I've never heard you say that before, and it sounds so good."
"Well, that's good; 'cause I like the sound of us being each other's... 'loves of our lives'." Jane drummed her fingers against the steering wheel, as she got a burst of adrenaline and a giddy feeling in her stomach. She drove the rest of the way with her girlfriend's hand resting in her lap and the sun warming her tired skin.
They pulled up into Maura's driveway not five minutes later where Angela and Tommy were waiting. Jane dashed around to Maura's side of the car to help her out with Tommy and Angela grabbed Jane's change of clothes and Maura's overnight bag out of the back seat. Maura tried her best to walk by herself, but her ankles were still a little achy and when she took a step, the weight of her body crunching down on her ribs pinched and it soon became too much so she reached out for Jane. Jane grabbed her hand and came close, dropping the pile of her own clothes Angela had handed her.
"It's okay; I've got you," she whispered as she held Maura close. Tommy steadied her from behind and Angela moved over to plush up the couch. Maura sat down and Jane knelt down in front of her, rubbing her thighs.
"What do you want for lunch, guys?" Tommy asked, but Maura just looked like she wanted to sleep for a week.
"You know what, baby brother, why don't you just grab us some Chinese and some burgers and we can put whatever Maura wants in the fridge until she feels like eating." Tommy nodded and grabbed his keys as Angela bent down to kiss the top of Maura's head. "Does that sound okay, baby?" Jane whispered to Maura.
"Yeah." Tommy and Angela left and so Jane grabbed a blanket for Maura's legs. She turned the T.V on and opened the fridge to get some food for Jo Friday and Bass. It was just after 1pm and Jo was skittering around at her feet until she placed down a bowl of food. When Jane returned back over to the couch with a glass of water, Maura had fallen asleep and was already beginning to drool. Jane suppressed a laugh but pulled out a tissue from her sweatpants pocket and dabbed away the stream of saliva trailing down Maura's cheek to the pillow below.
Jane shoved the tissue back into her pocket and sat down in front of the couch and flicked through the channels until she found a game of baseball to watch. She rested her back against the couch and let her head fall beside Maura's. The doctor sensed her presence and nuzzled into the base of Jane's neck, taking in a deep breath of her calming scent. Jane closed her eyes and turned her head towards Maura, and brought her lips over to hers. She kissed her girlfriend and smiled into it, being forever proud of herself for being good enough at her job to find Maura in time.
Maura woke just a little, and began kissing Jane back, rolling to her side to kiss her better, but Jane stopped her and leant over her so that she didn't hurt herself. She breathed in her scent as she let her tongue drag across Maura's bottom lip. She sucked it in between her own lips and bit gently. Maura, now fully awake, wound her bandaged hands into Jane's hair and pulled her closer until they were pressed so close together that they could hardly move.
Jane slipped her hands under Maura's shoulders and pulled her up until she was sitting back against the plush cushions of her couch. Jane stood up and pulled back the blanket from Maura and then straddled her, being careful not to hurt her many bruised portions of skin. Maura pulled Jane back down to her mouth, not even caring if she hurt anymore, because she knew Jane would make her feel better. And she was doing such an amazing job at making her feel better right now. Jane began trailing kisses down her neck, soothing every cut and bruise while her hands gently massaged her sides. Maura sighed and groaned in pleasure under every touch but suddenly she tensed when she saw Tommy grinning down at them.
"You okay, Maura?" Jane asked, leaning back up, but then she, too, saw her brother. "Shit, Tommy! When did you-"
"Don't worry about us," Jane heard Angela's voice come from the kitchen. "We'll just take what we want and you can have what you want... when you... are finished."
"Oh, Jesus," Jane grumbled, burying her head into Maura's neck. Maura wrapped her fingers into the tips of Jane's hair.
"Thank you," Maura called, and soon heard Tommy and Angela leave, so she pulled Jane's head up to kiss her again, to take away her pain of embarrassment. "I love you, you know?" she said in between kisses.
"I know, babe. I love you too," Jane whispered before kissing her again.
