Chapter 3:

Break time arrived and Lucy hurried to her locker in order to swap books over.

"Hi!"

Lucy looked up from searching the inside of her locker for her lunch. The blue-haired bookworm from homeroom was walking towards her, flanked by two tall guys

"It's Lucy, right? My name's Levy! Levy McGarden. And this is Jet and Droy." The boys expressed short greetings before informing Levy that they would go ahead to grab a table outside.

"Those two are by best friends. We've known each other since Primary School. But they're in the grade above us. Anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to join us for lunch."

Lucy smiled at the girl. "I would love that! Thanks! By the way, I noticed you reading in class, was that a Kemu Zaelon novel by any chance?"

"Ah! It was! He's so great! Are you a fan?"

"I am! Possibly one of his biggest fans. Have you read Daybreak yet?"

"His newest? No. I wish! But it was limited copies and is so hard to get a hold of." Levy pouted in frustration.

"Oh, I have a copy at home. I'll bring it in tomorrow and lend it to you, if you'd like."

"Oh my god! I love you already! You and I are going to be great friends, I know it! Come on! Let's go eat!"

Lucy grinned to herself as she followed Levy outside, towards some picnic tables where she could see the forms of Jet and Droy. Today was turning out better than expected. Classes weren't that bad, teachers were nice, and she'd made a new friend. Who knew what else was in store for her that day?

Her pleasant stream of daydreams was suddenly interrupted by being barrelled into by someone rushing past. Her eyes refocused and she found she was looking at a sheepish Natsu.

"Natsu! What the hell?" Levy was yelling at him. Lucy felt a mild jolt of surprise at the fire in the small book-loving girl. She decided she liked her even more. "Watch where you're going! And where the hell are you charging off to anyway? What could be that important?"

Natsu was grinning, but it wasn't like the innocent grin Lucy had seen on him before. No, this grin was hinting at a wild and dangerous personality. It held mischief and even a little sadism. He gave a short laugh. "There's a fight broken out. And you know I can't stand not being involved! So, I'm aiming to fix that." His grin got scarier, but before Lucy had time to shudder, he had turned around and was running away from them. "Sorry Levy! Sorry Luigi!"

Wait, what? Luigi?! Why the little… "It's Lucy!" She all but screamed back at him, thoroughly pissed off. And she had thought he was nice! She heard Levy sigh next to her and turned to her in time to see her shaking her head.

"Don't mind Natsu, Lucy. He's just trying to get a rise. He's not that bad a person, but he likes to get a rise out of as many people as he can." The girls restarted their walk towards their lunch table. "He, and Grey too, but not so much, can't seem to keep themselves out of fights. They are always in the thick of it. Resident bloody delinquents. Argh!" She made a noise of general frustration as they sat down. Jet snorted at Levy's rant.

"They're idiots, definitely. And Natsu's the worst of them. But they're loyal friends to people they deem friends. Which includes us three, even if Levy scowls at them. Even Erza calls them friend when she's not beating them for breaking rules. And Natsu has a strong sense of justice. Anyway, don't let Levy make you think badly of that lot because even she can't hate them."

Droy was nodding at Jet's words. Lucy turned to Levy to see a slightly guilty, but content smile on her face. "Nah, he's right. They're still delinquents, though. They are friends, and you can count on them for help, but I don't spend too much time around them for good reason." Levy nodded her head in finality and they all let the conversation steer away to other topics, like classes and books and what Jet and Droy were studying (Jet had no strong interests but was apparently the track-race champion; Droy was studying biology and horticulture). And then, Break was over.
