"It's a no then?" he mumbled, desperation and sadness showing in his voice. With a brief silence from Mai, he took that as a no. As he tried to stand up, he felt a tug on his shirt. He glanced back to Mai, who was in verge of tears.

"Mai…?"

"It's not like that Naru! I love you but…" she cried as tears began to fall.

"But?" he asked, again, sitting next to her.

"I'm afraid."

Did he heard it right? Did she just said she was afraid?

"What are you possibly afraid of Mai?" he softly questioned her, as he caressed her cheek and wiped her tears.

"I'm afraid, you would leave me… again. I know it seems stupid but…" He knew what she was saying. He did left her, and not to mention he left her broken. No wonder that she was afraid.

Mai looked down, not knowing what to say. Every second felt like hours for her, while she was deep in her thoughts she felt a pair of strong, warm hands wrapping around her.

"Naru…?" she said, her head was now against his chest. She looked up to see him staring down at her, what almost took her breath was that he was smiling, kindly.

"I love you" he said, before Mai could say anything, Naru hushed her placing a soft kiss on her forehead.

"I love you Mai" he said again, for the next 5 minutes, he kept on saying "I love you" to her, placing another soft kisses on her forehead and cheeks. It was like a dream for Mai, she knew the Naru she knew was not like this. But this is real, not a dream. Mai's eyes began to tear up again, and yes, she is crying a lot today. Although she was crying, she felt a lot calmer now.

"Naru" she managed to say his names despite the sobs, "I love you too" she said between her hiccups. Slowly, but firmly, she placed her arms around his upper torso, hugging him back.

"Please don't leave me" she mumbled weakly.

"I won't Mai, I won't let it happen again, I will not leave you."

The next day Mai was woken up by the bright sunlight, and felt great. It was as if a huge burden has been lifted from her heart. She was feeling healthier, mentally and physically. As she was stretching her arms, she forgot that she was having infusion.

"Ouch!" she screeched as she was rubbing her aching arm, she heard a low "idiot" coming from the sofa in her hospital room. She turned to see Naru, with an amused expression on his face, staring at her. Her face heated up,

"Naru!?" she cried

"Yes Mai, it's me." He said and got up, walking towards her bed.

"You know Mai, you slept yesterday without giving me an answer." He stated, Mai heated up more. The next thing she did, was covering her face with her covers, and tried her best not to harm her injected arm again.

She mumbled random words, not knowing what to say.

"I can't understand you Mai." He said. She felt him, going closer to her. Her heartbeat was going crazy right now. Squeezing her courage out, she peeked out only to see a pair dark blue eyes staring at her. Mai squealed, trying to hide herself again, but then Naru, snatched her covers, taking her one and only hiding spot.

"Hiding won't help Mai, you know I am not a patient man." Naru said, his signature smirk on his face. Soon, Mai realize that he was pinning her, having no place to escape.

With a moment of silence Mai finally gave in,

"Naru," she whispered

"Hm?"

This time, with her face red as a tomato, she leaned forward and softly placed her lips onto his. This surprised Naru, and saying that his eyes nearly popped out would be an understatement.

"This is my answer…?"

The next thing she knew, she was being attacked by storms of kisses. When the 'storm' ended, Mai found herself giggling, and she felt nice.

"Thank you" Naru said, his voice soft and gentle

"Un." She answered as they cuddled, enjoying each other's warmth.

After few days of resting, Mai was released from the hospital. Today, Mai and the rest of the gang are having a small reunion party at the SPR office. As Mai placed her feet onto the office floor, nostalgia hit her, she stared at the room for a moment, realizing at how the office hadn't changed much.

"What's wrong?" A voice from behind interrupted her thoughts, she turned to see Naru glancing at her with a slightly worried eyes.

"Nothing, I was just amazed how the office hadn't changed much." She answered.

Naru stared at her, and smirked lightly as he said

"It is because, Mai, I am the one who is keeping the office."

Mai was slightly startled of his answer and she elbowed him lightly.

"Narcissist"

Naru chuckled and gave her a peck on her cheek,

"Your one and only, Mai"

The reunion party was wonderful. They had a lot of catch up session. It turns out that Ayako and Bou-san was dating over a year, Lin and Madoka were engaged, Masako was over Naru, John was running his own orphanage, Yasuhara had graduated university and now a leader to a small research team. Through out the party, they laughed and had a great time together. As usual, Ayako was attacking Bou-san with her multifunctional purse, and John having to stop them and be the peacemaker. For Mai, it felt like she was back in the old days. She felt great, but on the other hand, she felt as if something was hitching her heart.

While everyone was busy talking and chatting, Mai stood up and walked towards the door.

"Jouchan? Where are you going? Don't tell me you're going home!" Bou-san said. Instantly, all the attention went to Mai.

"I'm just going to get some fresh air outside!" she said with a smile. As the door closed, everyone shared a worried glance.

"Is she okay? Or do you think she's not feeling well?" Ayako asked

"I don't know… I'm worried though." Bou-san said. Everyone nodded in response.

"Should we go after her? What do you think Big Boss?" Yasuhara asked. He shifted his glance to the seat Naru was sitting only to find it empty.

"Big Boss?" Yasuhara called, which was answered by the sound of a closing door.

Mai walked with thoughts filling her mind. When she realized, she was near a park. She walked over to the bench and sat there for a moment.

She was sure that everyone would be worried if she doesn't go back soon. But then, thinking about the gang made her heart clenched. She couldn't help but feel guilty. She knew everyone had forgiven her for her attitude, but she couldn't help it. Her attitude back then had hurt her 'family'. Mai stared at the ground, deep in thought. Suddenly, a pair of strong arms wrapped around her and her head was now leaning against someone's broad chest. Mai panicked, for a second she thought she was about to be kidnapped, but then, a familiar scent struck her.

"Naru…?"

"Hm?"

"What are you doing here?" she asked. Naru released his grip and sat next to her.

"You acted odd earlier so I got worried." He answered briefly. Mai nodded her head in response, and soon, Naru was holding her hand.

"Aren't you going back?" he asked but only to be answered by silence. Naru glanced at Mai, her bangs were covering her eyes.

He lowered his gaze to meet her eyes, now somewhat tearing up.

"Mai? What's wrong? Did something happened?" he asked softly

"I…" Mai answered. "Nothing happened Naru, it's just that… I feel guilty for behaving the way I did to them."

"They forgave you Mai, you don't need to feel guilty." He said, while softly patted her head.

"But…"

"You know Mai, I once had a big fight with Gene." Naru said.

"Eh?"

"When I was eight, I had a big fight with Gene. As you know, Gene and I were not as how people usually say as 'normal'. I could move things with my mind and Gene was able to talk to what others could not see." Naru paused a while, and continued,

"Even though we were 'unusual', we still had the urge and desire to play outside like most of the children around our age would. But once our 'powers' were discovered, we were bullied. From that point and on, I could not trust people around us."

"But when we were eight, Gene, he…. Made friends." He said. He glanced at Mai, as she nodded, signaling him to continue.

"I believed that they would make fun of us like how others did, so when we were playing, I used my PK and scared them off. One of the children got injured, and they refused to play with us afterwards. I know what I did was wrong but I just wanted to protect Gene, because I refuse us to through that hell and pain again. After finding out, he was furious and yelled at me saying he hated me. At first, I felt that he was over reacting, but then, I found out that he had worked so hard making friends. Afterwards Gene refuses to speak a word to me."

Naru sighed and smiled a bit. Somehow, in his eyes, Mai could see both nostalgia and sadness.

"Noticing our fight, mother came to talk to me, She asked me what's wrong and refuses to leave me alone unless I tell her. Once she knew, she was furious as well and scolded me like never before. But then, she also said she knew I did that to protect Gene. Then, she told me that people tend to do unkind actions to protect themselves. Sometimes they might do things overboard, but it is to protect themselves."

Mai stared blankly at the ground

"Mai, what you did back then was probably hurtful to others, but it was to protect yourself. The fact that they forgave you is because they love you dearly, Mai, and they know you did it for self protection."

Mai let her tears flow and sobbed, soon, Naru was embracing her, rubbing her back in circles. They spent the next few minutes like that. When they were back at the office, the gang bombarded them with questions, which was successfully hushed by Naru's laser glare.

When the party ended, everyone except Mai, Naru, Lin and Madoka was ready to leave. As they were about the leave the building, Mai tugged Ayako's multifunctional purse.

"Mai…?" she asked, everyone looked at Mai with confusion

Mai smiled warmly at them, "Thank you for the party guys, I love you lots." She said, with tears sliding down her cheeks. Ayako, Bou-san, John tear up, Masako hid her mouth behind her kimono sleeve, and Yasuhara was grinning and they all group hugged.

As Mai finished cleaning the dishes, as she went out of the small kitchenette to find Naru sitting on the couch. She sat next to Naru and rested her head on his shoulder. Naru wrapped one of his arms around her shoulder.

"Naru, it's near 9p.m. so I think I would be going home soon." She said

He turned to her,

"Do you want to stay at my place tonight?" he asked, a playful smile decorating his all mighty face.

Mai's face turned red, and elbowed Naru, this time, not as softly as before.

"Ouch Mai, that was the second time today. I wonder what I should do with you." He said teasingly. As Mai was flustered she quickly changed the topic of their conversation,

"Ne, Naru, what happened to you and Gene afterwards? How did you guys made up?" she asked hoping this would work.

Mai expected for an answer, but then, Naru stared down at her and…. Smirked.

Scratch that, it would never work.

"Well Mai, what if I tell you what happened if you decide to stay at my place? Hm?"

The next thing, Mai grabbed the cushion on the couch and hid her face. She was hoping this would end but, well, this is Naru we are talking about. When does he miss the chance to tease Mai? Never. He leaned closer to Mai to the point that she could feel his breath next to her ear.

"Taniyama san, you know that wouldn't work right?" Naru playfully asked. Strong arms that was once around her shoulder was now around her waist. As they were in their own little world, they heard a loud cough. Mai jolted and face to the source of the sound to find Lin. Yes, Lin.

"I suggest you would continue this somewhere else because we are closing up soon." He said.

Naru soon lifted Mai up despite her protest and walked towards his car. Lin could hear Mai's shout and sighed as he proceed to close the office for today.
