As Jane snuggled herself around Maura's warm body, the rain fell heavier and she could see the blonde watching it drip down the windows. Her eyelids fluttered in the moonlight and her chest rose and fell as sleep took over her body, but her mind continued to buzz. As Jane watched her, she wondered what thoughts were swimming through her girlfriend's brain and if she thought that Jane had already fallen asleep. She wanted to move her fingertips up and along Maura's arm that lay in front of her, but she didn't want to disturb her.
A car whooshed by outside and made Maura jump a little. Jane stifled a snort and bit her lips to prevent a giant smile breaking her face in half. She pressed her nose into the back of Maura's neck and nuzzled a bit in an attempt to distract herself from laughing. The blonde's skin seemed to relax and come down from its hype of thinking and she pushed herself back into Jane. She brought her hand up and touched Jane's hand that rested on her tummy. She stroked her fingers in between Jane's until she spread and lifted them, allowing Maura to link them together. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, settling back into Jane's embrace.
"I love you," Jane whispered, never letting her lips leave Maura's neck. Maura turned slightly in Jane's arms to look at her.
"I thought you were asleep." Jane shook her head gently at the blonde. "Did I wake you, though?"
"No; I never fell asleep. I was watching you."
"Oooo; creepy," Maura said with a slight giggle. She rolled around completely so that she could be nose to nose with Jane, and wriggled it from side to side. Jane pulled back and rubbed her nose free of its tickles and then rolled herself into Maura. "Sorry, babe." She wound her hand into Jane's hair and pulled her in for a kiss. Sleep was evading them now.
There was a long silence between them, only filled with the overflow of drain pipes and late night drivers making their way down Maura's street. Jane had never realised the true wonder and mystic glow from heaven that was the colour of Maura's eyes. Gold, green flecks with hints of utter magic shining like the giver of life; and there wasn't even any suitable lighting to illuminate them. A subtle shadow was cast across the blonde's face which made it even more amazing that Jane could tell what colours were there.
"Maybe they are magic," Jane mused, thinking that Maura could be a type of supernatural creature with powers that radiate from her eyes.
"What?"
"Your eyes, sorry; they're magic."
"It's true. I can see you naked, anytime, you know... X-ray vision." Never in Jane's wildest dreams had she thought Maura would make such a joke and make it sound so unbelievably adorable. Jane didn't even care anymore, well she did, but she loved that her mind had gotten used to it; to Maura being less cyborg, more woman. "I love you too, by the way."
"I know. I always knew."
"No, you didn't," Maura argued.
"No, I didn't. Well, I kinda did, but I wasn't in love with you. I mean, I could've been, I just didn't realise it. Like, I was too busy with guys that I didn't realise how gay I was, even though people made comments ab-"
"Stop! Stop analysing yourself, please. You love me, I love you, we're gay together, and we're here, right now, in bed, on a rainy night, and it's all romantic; and you're analysing yourself?"
"Sorry," Jane said with a small laugh. She glanced around the room, taking in the lighting, the rain, the glow of Maura... "It is romantic, isn't it?" Maura bit her bottom lip and nodded enthusiastically. Jane sat up, pushing the covers to Maura's feet, but then she stopped. "Oh," she said, slightly concerned.
"What?"
"This is bad."
"What's bad?"
"I don't wanna have sex." Maura turned her head in confusion stared at Jane. "I just wanna cuddle. I mean, we could have really awesome, romantic sex, but I just want to lie naked with you and listen to the rain."
"Jane, that's not bad; that's beautiful," Maura said as she sat up. She placed a hand on Jane's knee, stroking it for a second, before pulling her shirt over her head.
"What are you doing?"
"You said you wanted to be naked."
"Oh, yeah." Maura smiled and pulled off her panties as well, just in case they did end up getting a little frisky later and lay back down, opening her arms for Jane. The brunette snuggled in under Maura's arm a few moments later once her clothes were tossed haphazardly around the room.
"Two pieces of clothing and they end up all over the room. There's only two!"
"Calm down, little miss naked."
"I'm naked for you."
"Thanks. I mean, not that sex isn't great w-"
"You're analysing stuff again, Jane." Jane pressed her face into the crook of Maura's neck and groaned, wondering how she'd become the worrier of the two of them. She rolled her head back to its side, trying to shut her mind off for at least a few hours.
"I just want to be with you in the most simple of ways every day for the rest of my life. We don't have to have sex whenever we're in bed and not sleeping. We can be together in silence and not have to do anything else."
"We can eat pizza instead though, right?"
"Yes, we can eat pizza," Jane answered as she sat up a little to look into Maura's eyes. "I just like... you."
"Aw, I like you too," Maura squeaked.
"Can you stop making everything so adorable, please," Jane grumbled as she rest her head back down."
"I would try, but I'd probably make it sound adorable."
"Stop it," Jane whined, attempting to sound annoyed with the overload of the 'a' word, but she was too happy.
The rain continued to fall harder and harder, making Maura think it might flood some houses down the hills in the city. She was glad she'd closed the windows downstairs and had the bedroom window only open a crack. A little rain was spitting through that small opening, but not enough for anything to get soaked overnight. The water was still hanging precariously off the window sills and drain pipes, but they were giving in a little sooner by each minute as the storm intensified outside. If it was later in the year, the rain would be snow, and the likelihood of people getting to work the next day would be a lot harder, maybe even impossible.
But for now it was rain. It was warm as the humidity set in yet cool as the rainy breeze blew in. Again, Maura felt her mind begin to wonder. She had to stop though, because it was getting later, and as it was not snow falling outside, work was still a thing that she had to do tomorrow.
Jane squeezed at Maura's side as she fell asleep, and soon Maura was out as well; both blissfully happy in each other's arms and love.
