Disclaimer: I don't own Young Justice, but I do own Andie Kyle.
I blinked rapidly and forced my limbs to move. Raising an arm, I grabbed his outstretched hand and hauled myself up. We stood like that, facing each other. "…you're going to get killed if you keep taking hits like that."
"Thanks for the heads up." He turned to the approaching guards with a sour expression. "I'll just tell them to punch me gently."
I attempted to frown, but the movement aggravated my damaged nose. "Just remember we're not invincible. We're superheroes without superpowers…if we could just fight our way past the masked men, then maybe we could escape –"
"Don't lecture me Andie. I've been a hero longer than you – I know I'm not invincible. And I know that you're not either." He directed a pointed look at my shattered nose. "I'm not continuing this fight just because I feel like it. We've started this battle; we've alerted the guards. If we run away they'll kill our teammates – sooner rather than later.
"But we don't stand a chance. Can't you see that?" I turned towards our enemies, they were forming a loose ring, attempting to surround us.
"…we're not running away."
"We'll come back with The League –"
"We are not running away." His jaw clenched. "As leader of this mission, I order you to fight."
I took a step back, shaking my head violently. "Forget it Robin. We won't win; we won't survive." I searched around us for an opening in the enemy's ranks. "Just… just come on. We'll leave together, get the Justice League, and come back before – "
"They'll be dead. If we leave, our teammates will be killed for sure. I won't risk it."
"Well, I don't care!" I wrapped my hands around myself, taking another step back. "I mean…wh… what's the point in all of us dying? We still have a chance Robin - why not take it?"
I turned towards the ring of guards. The area I faced had only a few masked men. I walked towards them.
"Andie. Don't do something you'll regret." His voice was edged with steel.
My body tensed, but I kept on walking. I want to live.
"You're going to disobey a direct order? Abandon your teammates? Abandon me? Runway?" He shot the questions at me one after another.
"I…I'll come back… with The League."
"There will be no-one left when you come back; I won't be able to handle these guys without you." He gave a bark of emotionless laughter. "You might as well say your goodbyes."
My feet dragged along the floor, but I refused to look back. One glance at Robin's face would change my mind. "…I'll get back in time, and you'll all be fine."
"Yeah right." He approached me, his feet beating against the floor. "We both know you won't make it."
I paused but didn't turn around, and he grabbed onto my arm. "I'm here; I've got you're back. I hope you realise you're not alone in this… because you're only thinking about yourself."
I said nothing.
His scoffed, his voice was bitter. "Well, I guess you really are the daughter of Selina Kyle –"
I slapped him; his head swung sideways. "Don't. Don't even go there."
His look of shock slowly vanished as we stood, staring at one another. His jaw was set in stone. "If you leave, we are finished."
I swallowed, and the only thing I could hear was the beating of my heart.
Suddenly, Robin went flying across the corridor. He slid to a halt a good distance away. I stood rooted to the spot as his attacker glared down at me. The man raised his fist, and my reflexes took over. I jumped to the side, and made a beeline towards Robin.
The Boy Wonder was pinned to the floor. Above him stood a masked man … who lifted his foot… and stomped on Robin's head.
I felt sick.
I ran towards him. Forget about arguing, forget about escaping – All of that means nothing If Robin doesn't survive. I pushed past the guards, my feet hitting the floor, the simple act of breathing had become near impossible. Then I fell to my knees as a sharp pain invaded my mind. My momentum caused me to skid forward, until I lay flat on the floor, right in front of Robin. He raised his head; his attacker raised his foot...
Then a blinding pain exploded in my skull. I screamed, clawing at my forehead. I pressed my hands to my temple; I ground my teeth; I writhed. Then the pain subsided, almost as if it had never existed.
And I looked up. A strand of dark hair fell in front of my eyes.
Before me stood the thin form of Psimon. He leered. "I see you and your teammates are still alive. Such a pity." He sighed, as though burdened. "I'll just have to give my men a helping hand."
I clenched my eyes shut. "We should have escaped," I whispered.
Then he hit me with another mind blast.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I lay still against the floor, my heaving chest the only movement. "Leave me alone..." My voice came out as a desperate whine. There was silence in the corridor. Every guard had retreated on Psimon's orders. My teammates were still locked in the cell. With the addition of a slow speedster, and a battered Robin, that made six.
He hit me again; my body twitched with the effects of the brain blast. Sweat had long since loosened my plait, and I lay in a puddle of black hair. "Just...just throw me in the cell. Please. Just...please."
He grinned. "Alright. I'll just pick someone else as my plaything. Would you prefer I go for the Boy Wonder?"
I turned my head slightly. Within the cell, a bleeding Robin lay, motionless. He watched me from across the corridor. His eyes seemed glassy, I couldn't tell if he was even conscious. Then he nodded - a small tilt of his head - but still a nod.
I swallowed hard, tears of relief sprang to my eyes. "Yes. Take Robin instea–"
"Too slow."
He hit me with another brain blast and I screamed out, clutching my forehead. The tears started to flow. "Help me. Someone help me."
Psimon smiled. His brain bulged as though excited. "Psimon says...let's have some fun."
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I opened my eyes to a white room. It had no doors, and no windows. Essentially, it was a cell.
"If that's what you believe," came a disembodied voice. "Though I personally think it's more like a Safe."
I spun around, and Psimon stood an inch from my face. I stumbled backwards. "Where did you come from? And where am I?" He grabbed my head, and turned it a full three-sixty degrees. I stared at the wall. On it, were moving images of Selina and I. A couple even held pictures of me in 'cat form'.
"It seems that you have quite a few secrets. And you keep them all in this Safe. Very secure."
I blinked, and suddenly we were out of the room, looking at a large white box covered in chains. "What the heck is going on?"
Psimon touched the box, and a massive keyhole appeared. "This is your Safe, although, I don't believe it's very safe. After all, a key exists for every lock, don't you think?"
I narrowed my eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Psimon says...open."
A flash of light appeared, forcing me to shield my eyes. When I looked again, a little girl stood before me. She had wild dark hair. She wore a black cat suit. And she possessed the Cat's Essence.
My eyes widened.
She grinned, proudly displaying her fangs. They scraped along her bottom lip, slightly drawing blood. I made a sound of disgust and her head fell sideways, frozen in an unnatural angle. She blinked... slowly.
Her eyes were beautiful - and ugly. Those light green spheres were deceiving, for in the center, black slits resided. They told a story of pain - years of harm bestowed onto others - those eyes enjoyed the blood shed; this person bathed in it.
She pointed a claw at me, it curved slightly, almost delicately. "I am Andrea Kyle," her voice was husky, a deep but hypnotizing baritone. "The daughter you wish you were."
Tensions rise high in the midst of battle when Andie allows fear to cloud her judgement. And our mysterious enemy finally arrives - will he be the downfall of Young Justice? And more importantly, will he be the catalyst to a messy breakup?
