Picnics and Presents

"What have I told you before?" Mary mumbled with her eyes still closed.

"That you love it when I watch you sleep." Her husband replied and although she couldn't see him, she knew he was grinning.

"It's too early for you to be messing with me."

"Ah but it's not…It's almost 11:30."

Mary's eyes flew open to see him stretched out on his side next to her, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. "AM?"

"No, Mare 11pm...I let you sleep for a whole day." He replied, sarcastically.

She rolled her eyes and sat up, pushing her hair out of her face. "Where's your shadow?"

"She's doing some coloring with Brandi." Marshall moved onto his back and placed his hands behind his head. "Your sister is really good with her."

"Yeah but what happens now?" She asked. "Hannah gets used to being around these people and then we leave?"

He paused for a moment. "You want to stay?"

"That's not what I'm saying…It just we should probably decide what our next move is going to be." She told him and then put her hand on her pregnant stomach. "We're going to have another baby soon…We haven't got any clothes or a crib…."

"We've still got time." Marshall assured her as he sat up beside her. "But you're right… we need to make some decisions."

"Is Nathan still coming over today?" She questioned.

"Yeah, I spoke to him earlier…He wants me to go to the hospital." Marshall told her. "But I'll tell him we need to talk to him about…"

"No you won't!" She cut in. "You're going to the hospital."

"Mare…"

"You go with him and then we can talk to him when you get back." She insisted. "I could ask Brandi to see if Peter and she will go out for the night so we can have the house."

"We can't kick them out of their own house…"

"Isn't it our house?"

He rolled his eyes. "You know what I mean."

"They won't mind."

"Well, my parents are coming over for lunch in a little while so we'll figure the rest out later." He kissed her forehead. "You got time to jump in the shower if you want."

"You better go make sure Hannah is doing okay without you."

"You think we wouldn't hear the screaming if she wasn't?"

"That's true but she may have changed tactics and could be tying Brandi up as we speak…"

"Ah, well she is your daughter after all."

"Idiot." She shoved him and he rolled off the bed onto his feet.

"Hey, Mare?"

"Yeah?"

"We're going to work it out, you know?" He assured her. "Things are different now…Even if we don't stay in Albuquerque…I'll find a way to keep Brandi, Jinx and my family in our lives."

She rounded the bed so she was stood in front of him. "We're in this together remember, doofus…We'll do it together and as long as I have you and our kids, then that's all I need."

"What you need and what you deserve are two different things." He tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "And you deserve so much…Your happiness and safety shouldn't come with the condition that you sacrifice something."

"I've been sacrificing my whole life." She claimed. "But just know, our life together…I'd sacrifice anything for it."

"I do know." He smiled. "Like this stage of your pregnancy…"

"What stage?"

"When you get all emotional and open up to me about your feelings." He teased, lightening the mood.

"I am not emotional!" She pointed a finger at him warningly.

"Whatever you say." He held up his hand.

"Get out of here."

Marshall gave her another grinned before heading for the door…some things never change.

The rest of the day had been pretty relaxed. They had gone to a nearby park for a picnic lunch with Marshall's family, Brandi, Peter and they had invited Jinx, who still wasn't too happy with the situation but was slowly coming around. Hannah was coming out of her shell with them all too but never strayed too far from Marshall.

Mary had been expecting another tantrum when they got back to the house and Marshall had said he was leaving with Nathan but their daughter just hugged and kissed him goodbye before going back to her coloring.

"Can you tell us anything about what you've been up to?" Brandi asked, once Mary had returned from getting Hannah settled for her nap.

She sighed and sat on the couch next to Colleen. "What do you want know?"

"Your boss told us you witnessed a murder." Her sister told her. "Have you been on the run since then?"

"I had to leave because it wasn't safe for me or for any of you…I did what was best for everyone."

"And Marshall?" Colleen questioned.

"Marshall did the right thing for me." She said softly. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without him."

"So, you've just been moving around this whole time?" Jinx asked.

"To begin with we moved around a lot but after we found out about the arrests that were made we decided to start looking for somewhere to settle down." Mary explained. "Then I got pregnant and we just stayed in Maine."

"Was your pregnancy planned?"

"Brandi." Peter nudged her and rolled his eyes.

"What? I'm just asking…"

Mary smiled a little. "No, it wasn't planned…In fact I was freaked out but eventual came around to the idea…"

"This is a nice surprise…" Marshall smiled and kissed her cheek once he reached her.

She had called and asked him to meet her for lunch; he had been working all morning, trying to convince 14 years old Devon Richardson that he needed to go school and the next time he got arrested the judge wouldn't be so lenient. Devon's single mother had come into the center and begged someone to help her son, suggesting that having a positive male role model might help the teenager since his father had never been around but be didn't seem to getting anywhere with the teenager so taking a break and hanging out with his wife was just what he needed.

"I got bored at home on my own." She shrugged but the truth was, she couldn't stop from thinking about the baby and it was driving her crazy. It had been three days since she had done the pregnancy test and they hadn't decided what to do yet. Marshall had spoken with Nathan who assured him that everyone who was a danger to them were still out of action and couldn't come up with any reasons why having a child would put them in danger. He even set up some medical records so Mary could go to a doctor under their new name without raising any flags. Marshall had told her he was ready to talk about it whenever she was and kept to his word by not pushing her into a discussion.

"Well, I'm glad of the distraction." He replied. "Where do you want to eat?"

"I actually made a few things." She held up the bag she was carrying. "I don't know when I came accustom to making picnics and I don't know how long it's going to last so don't get used to it."

He grinned and took the bag off her, swinging it onto his own shoulder. "There's a park just around the corner, we can go there."

Mary rolled her eyes at him. "Would you look at us…We used to be badass marshals, now we're one of those couple who eat outside."

"Can you imagine Stan's face if we told him we were going to the park to eat a picnic that you packed for lunch."

"He would have thought we were up to something for sure." She agreed entwining her fingers in between his when he reached for her hand. "He would have probably thought I was trying to poison you or something."

Marshall stopped suddenly, causing her to stumble a little since she was still holding his hand.

"You're not, right?" He asked but she could tell he was joking. "I mean, maybe you've been planning this the whole time..."

"I learnt a long time ago that I couldn't get rid of you." She started walking again pulling him with her. "Anyway, you'd just trade your food for mine and I'd ended up getting poison."

"Yeah that is true." He followed her. "I guess we're stuck together then."

When they reached the park, Mary led him over to a secluded patch of grass and he watched as she spread out a blanket for them to sit on. He wisely didn't comment but he was surprise. When she suggested lunch outside, he had imagined some sandwiches she had thrown together and that they would eat on a park bench.

"What?" She looked up at him from her position kneeling on the blanket, removing items from the bag.

"Nothing." He shook his head and smile before dropping down beside her. "This looks good."

"Just some sandwiches and salad." She shrugged. "I got some cupcakes for after."

"Cupcakes?" He peered into the plastic container at the cakes with a perfect swirl of yellow buttercream frosting on top and remembered that night when she first attempted them. "You're getting pretty good at this baking stuff."

"It's something to do." She handed him a can of soda. "And Marco said he would sell them at the coffee shop, so I need to the practice."

"Well, I'm happy to be your taste tester." He assured him, smiling a little wondering if the reason she had decided to stay working in coffee shops and café wasn't because she couldn't figure out what she wanted to do but because she enjoyed it.

"So, you sounded stressed when I called you earlier…" Mary commented, glancing across the park at a man sitting on a bench. He wasn't doing anything suspicious but he looked a little odd sat alone wearing a suit and checking his cell phone but before she could think any more, she saw him looking up and a smile spread across his face. He stood up, held out his arms just in time to catch a little boy. She couldn't tear her eyes away from the scene as a woman joined them, leaning up to kiss the man's cheek.

"Mare." Marshall waved a hand in front of her face to get her attention.

"What? Sorry…" She looked back to him quickly.

"You okay?"

"Yeah just…" She started but then sighed, looking back over the family where the man was now pushing his son on the swings. "Is it that simple?"

"Is what that simple?" Marshall asked, twisting around to see what she was looking at.

"That guy…" She gestured over to the family. "He was just sat there then suddenly he saw his kid and he was like the happy guy in the world."

"Mare, do you really want to talk about this now?"

"Well, we're going to have to at some point, right? Otherwise the decision will be taken out of our hands."

Marshall looked back over to the swings and was silent for another couple of minutes before looking back at her. "What did you mean by is it that simple?"

"Just look at them." She gestured again. "They're not doing anything other than spending time together in the park and they look happy."

"No, Mare it's not that simple." He shook his head. "It's not simple or easy, it expensive and it's a job for life…"

"Wow and I thought you were the one that was on the parenthood side…" She cut in sarcastically.

Marshall had been very careful about telling her what he felt about the baby because he didn't want his opinion to cloud hers but she knew him better than anyone…She would know he wanted children without him even telling her so decided to just confirm it. "I am."

"Okay…" She nodded a little, surprised that he actually admitted it.

"It's hard work, Mare…" He continued. "But days in the park, first words and steps, graduations …The love of a child …They kinda make it worthwhile."

Mary could hear the little boy laughing faintly from where they sat and despite being able to see Marshall's point, she couldn't help but scoff. "That's cheesy, even for you."

Marshall smiled and squeezed her hand. "Mare, not everyone wants all that and if you don't then that doesn't make you a bad person and I know you're scared but you know I'm here no matter what...I'm not going to walk away…You're stuck with me."

"And what if I screw up?" She asked. "If I leave kid at the grocery store or forget to fed it or put a diaper on wrong?"

"We can practice the diapers and if this kid is anything like you, you'll definitely know when they're hungry." He teased lightly. "And leaving them behind won't happen…"

"Really?" She asked skeptical. "Because the amount of times I've balanced things on the roof of my car, then forgotten and driven off…"

"No leaving to the baby on the roof of the car then." He advised, leaning forward and pressing his lips to her gently. "There is no one in the world that I know who is better at taking care of people…"

"Now I know you're lying…" She rolled her eyes.

"I mean it." He insisted. "Mare, you did it as a career…You were the best and look at Brandi and Jinx…I know you guys had it rough for a while but you never gave up on them and was always there for them."

"That's sweet but you always look at the positive side of things…"

"I admit I am more of a 'glass full' kinda guy…" He relented. "But just think of this…Would I let you go through with something that I truly thought you would regret it, hate or fail at it?"

She shook her head a little. "No, I trust you."

"It's understandable to have concerns, Mare…I do to but you need to work out whether this is worth the risks." He said softly and nodded his head towards the playground area. "If you can see us doing that and being happy…"

"I think I can…" She whispered, watching the boy now going down the smallest of the slides. "Am I messed up that I'm scared that I'm not scared as I thought I would be?"

"Oh Mare, you're defiantly messed up but that's a whole different issue." He grinned cheekily at her, succeeding in lightening the mood and had to dodge the punch she aimed at him. "But we can do this, Mare."

"Okay…" She took a deep breath. "You got 9 months to convince me…"

"I never back down from a challenge." Somehow his grin got even wider as he leaned across the grass to press his lips to hers, when he pulled back he made sure to look her in the eye. "You sure this is what you want?"

"I do want it…I just never thought I could have it."

"You can…We can…"

The sound of Hannah crying stopped Mary telling her story. "Long story short…two years later, here we are."

They watched as Mary stood up and left the room to go check on her daughter.

"Mom…" Brandi turned to Jinx who had been pretty quiet all day. "You okay?"

"I just don't know what to think." She sighed dramatically and shook her head.

"It's a lot of information to take in, I'll agree with you on that and also on not knowing the truth for all these years but don't you think it was bad enough to lose them once…" Colleen said understandingly. "Do you want to go through that again when you don't have to?"

"Who says we won't have to?" Jinx questioned. "Who says we won't wake up tomorrow and find them gone again?"

"I'm sure Marshall and Mary are going to do everything they can to stay in contact." Rob stated.

"Maybe we should just enjoy the time we have with them." Seth advised. "If they did have to leave, they would be doing it because it's what's best for them and the kids."

"You really think they would leave again?" Brandi asked tearfully.

Seth sighed. "Honestly, I don't…They probably won't stay in New Mexico but I think they will be able to stay in contact with us."

The conversation stopped when Mary re-entered the room with a still sleepy looking Hannah in her arms.

"What's going on?" She questioned, curiously.

"Nothing." Brandi forced a smile.

"Okay…" She replied looking at them all but wasn't convinced something had happened while she had been out the room.

"Well, why don't I go make some coffees?" Peter suggested as he stood up. "I think we have some cookies somewhere too…"

"I'll help you." Mary told him and sat Hannah down on the couch next to her sister. "Here you go, Little Miss…Aunt Brandi will find you something to watch on TV, okay?"

Hannah nodded sleepily and rubbed her eyes.

"I'll be right back." Mary said to Brandi, who just smiled, happy to send some more time with her niece.

When she entered the kitchen, she moved to the fridge to get some juice out for Hannah while Peter made a start on the coffee. "So, what was really going on in there?"

Peter glanced across at her. "It's nothing to worry about…Just everyone was wondering what you had planned next."

Mary sighed. "We don't know yet, with everything that has been happening we haven't had chance to decide...It's what we need to discuss with Nathan and Stan tonight."

Brandi and Peter had already agreed to go out for dinner tonight so that they could invite Stan and Nathan over to talk about the case.

Peter smiled a little. "Everyone will understand, you know? If you have to leave to keep safe then that's what you've got to do…"

"We're hoping it's going to come to that." Mary stated.

"Well, if you need any help with anything just let us know."

"Thanks…" Mary smiled and turned at the sound of the front door opening and closing. Her smile widened when she saw Marshall and Nathan enter the kitchen. "Hey…"

"Hey, yourself." Marshall leaned down to drop a kiss on her forehead. "Where's the kid?"

"Watching cartoons with Aunt Brandi." She answered then looked past him to Nathan. "What did the doctor say?"

"Why are you asking him?" Marshall asked.

"Because he won't lie to me." She replied and looked back to Nathan. "So?"

Nathan chuckled lightly. "The worse of it is some bruised ribs."

"And the shoulder?"

"I need to go back for some tests." Marshall answered and kissed her forehead again. "It's fine..."

"Hmm, if you say so." She said unconvinced and then noticed he had something in his hand. "What's in the bag?"

"Presents." He grinned, pulling the first item out. "For you."

Mary rolled her eyes but took the gift. "Massage oils?"

"I know your back has been hurting so I thought I could help you out later." He shrugged.

"It's a date." She replied. "What else you go in there?"

This." Next he took out three little romper suits. She was pleased to see he had chosen a pale green one with a duck on it, a yellow one with a giraffe and a white one with a teddy bear. "You said we needed to get some clothes for the baby so I got a head start."

Mary took the suits, running her fingers over the soft material. It suddenly hit her that soon they were going to have a baby so small that they would fit into those outfits. Shaking her head a little, she forced her attention back to Marshall, not wanting to get emotional especially since Nathan and Peter were still in the room.

"And what about Hannah?" Mary questioned. "I know you wouldn't leave her out…what does she get?"

Marshall smirked. "This is the best one."

"Oh god…." Mary groaned at the possibility of what her geek of a husband could have picked out for her daughter.

"Look…" He showered a baby doll.

"A doll?" Mary stared at him. "You got her a doll?"

"Well, yeah…." He replied. "I thought it might help her understand everything with the baby…"

"Are you comparing our unborn child to a plastic toy?"

"Of course not." He rolled her eyes. "But she can play with the doll and pretend to take care of it…It'll be fun…She'll love it."

"She doesn't like dolls."

"She's two, Mare…" Marshall laughed. "She doesn't know what she likes…"

"I know my daughter…"

"It'll be fine." He replied, putting the doll back into the bag.

"Uh-huh, if you say so…"

"You'll see…"

Peter laughed lightly and shook his head as he watched them leaving the kitchen. "Some things never change…"

"They've always been like?" Nathan looked at him and picked up some mugs to take into the next room.

"Always." Peter answered, picking up the tray with the coffee and cookies on.

When they entered the other room, Marshall was kneeling on the floor; Hannah was sat in front of him, her eyes closed and holding out her arms, giggling.

"Okay…" Marshall set the doll into her arms. "Open your eyes."

Hannah looked down at the doll for a second before looking back up to Marshall, a little confused.

"It's a dolly…" He told her. "A little like your teddy bears…You can play with her and give her cuddles…"

"Awww." Hannah hugged it to her.

Marshall looked back at Mary and grinned but she just shook her head. "Wait for it…"

"It's like having your own little baby…" Marshall said looking back to Hannah.

Hannah frowned. "No baby!"

Before Marshall could say anything else, she grabbed the doll's foot and flung it across the room where it hit the wall with a bang before dropping to the floor. He sighed and as she then crawled onto his lap, setting her head on his chest.

The room was silent, no one knew what to say until Mary started to laugh then they all copied.

Marshall rolled his eyes and tightened his hold on Hannah. He looked up when he felt a hand on his shoulder and saw Mary stood above them.

"It was sweet of you to try…" She leaned down to whisper in his ear then kissed his cheek. "But I told ya…"

"Yeah, yeah…whatever." He stood up with Hannah still in her arms. "At least we know not to let her hold the baby..."

Mary ran her hand down Hannah's back soothingly. "We'll work it out…It'll be different when he is here."

"She." He corrected and dropped a kiss on her lips, pulling back when there was a knock on the door.

"I'll get it." Brandi stood up.

"Okay, Little Miss, do you want your juice?" Marshall set Hannah back down on the floor and handed her, her pink cup and a cookie.

"Hmm-yum." She took the cookie and settled down on the floor.

Marshall was just standing up straight when he noticed Stan following Brandi into the room. "Hey, you're a little early…"

"Ah, yeah there was some stuff to deal with before we got into what you wanted to talk about…"

Mary frowned a little. "What's going on?"

"Who's that?" Marshall stepped in front of Mary and Hannah protectively when noticed Stan wasn't alone.

Mary rolled her eyes and pushed Marshall lightly when she realized what he had done. He took the hint and stepped back so he was by her side.

"Marshall, Mary…" The woman walked past Stan and held out her hand. "It's nice to meet you…I've heard so much about you both."

They looked at each other then back to her but neither of them took her hand.

"This is Allison Pearson…She's the US Marshal for our district." Stan explained.

"I've been briefed on your case and I would just like to say on behalf of the Marshal Service how proud we are to have the two of you as part of our team." Allison stated. "And we would like to do everything in our power to help you get your life back on track…"

Mary narrowed her eyes at the other woman and folded her arms. "Back on track?"

Marshall reached out and put a hand on Mary's back. "Ms. Pearson…"

"Allison, please…"

"Allison." He amended. "We appreciate the sentiment but we just need to figure out where we are going to stay then we'll be set."

"Oh, I'm sure you've been coping just fine." She smiled at them both. "Stan has informed me how wonderful you both were at your jobs…"

"Well thank you but I don't understand what you have in mind…"

"Firstly, I think we need to get you both working again."

"We have been working." Mary cut in.

"I mean, with the Marshal Service…I know Stan would welcome you back to Albuquerque or I'm sure we could sort something out if there was another location you would prefer…" She continued. "Now, Inspector Shannon, I understand you won't be able to return for the time being considering your circumstances…"

"My circumstances!?" Mary repeated, looking at Marshall quickly before back to Allison.

This time when Marshall stepped forwards so he was between the two of them it was because he knew his wife was going to lose her cool soon.

"Again, Ms. Pearson we appreciate your offer…"

"Oh, it's nothing…You're an asset to the service and although your partner won't be able to return right now we could get you back in no time at all…"

"No." Marshall shook his head. "I'm sorry I'm not going back to the Marshal Service."

The room fell silent and everyone looked at him, surprised by his announcement.

"You're not?" Seth questioned, standing up from where he had been watching silently.

Marshall sighed and ran a hand over his face. "No, I'm not…I can't."

"What do you mean, you can't?" Mary took his arm and forced him to face her.

"I was waiting to tell you later when we were alone…" He explained. "I do need to go back to have more tests done on my arm but the doctors say there is nerve damage… I'm always going to have some kind of limited movement…I'm wouldn't be able to pass the fitness test for the marshal service."

Her eyes widened a little; they had both come to terms with the fact they were probably never going to be able to go back to their careers but there had always been a little part of her hoping they would be given the chance.

"Marshall…" She whispered, her hand moving down his arm to find his and squeezed it tightly.

He smiled at her. "It's fine…"

"But…"

"Honestly, Mare…" He shook his head and kissed her forehead. "I'm happy with our life."

"Dada up…"

Marshall was saved from continuing the conversation by his daughter wanting to be picked up.

"Look at you…." He swung her into his arms. "How did you manage to get so messy by one cookie?"

"Cookie yum…" She gave him a chocolate grin.

Marshall laughed. "I'm going to give her a bath…Get her all cleaned up."

"Okay…" Mary agreed, not wanting to finish their conversation in front of everyone either.

"Ms. Pearson, it was nice to meet you…" Marshall said before carrying Hannah to the bathroom.

"Allison, it might be best if I go over their options with them later." Stan suggested. "They will need time to think about everything too…"

"Of course." She agreed. "I'll let you get on with your day…"

"Uh-huh… thanks for stopping by." Mary said although there was something about the woman she didn't like.

"I'll be back later, Mary…" Stan told her and waited until Allison was out the room before adding more. "I'm sorry about her…"

Mary gave him a small smile. "Don't worry about it…See you later?"

He nodded before following Allison out of the house.

"I should go talk to Marshall about this…" Seth claimed but Mary stopped him.

"No, I'm giving him a minute then I'll go talk to him…"

"But giving up his career so quickly…"

"Sir, I know it must be hard for you to understand but trust me, this wouldn't be an easy decision for him to make." Mary told him. "And it's been taken out his hands anyway…"

"But I don't understand what could have been so bad that it would end his career…" Seth said.

"He was shot." Mary told him. "And it's not something I want to talk about right now, so just leave it, okay?"

They all watched as Mary went to find Marshall and Hannah, none of them really knowing what to say.

"He was shot?" Colleen whispered, breaking the silence.

"Honey, he's okay." Seth tried to comfort her. "I mean, he's here and he has a beautiful family…"

"Yes but we weren't there for him…"

"I'm sure they'll tell us what happened when they're ready." Rob claimed. "But for now maybe we should give them some space."

"That sounds like a good idea." Peter agreed and turned to Brandi. "Honey, you ready to head out for dinner?"

"Oh, sure…let me grab my purse."

"We'll come and talk to him tomorrow." Seth told Colleen, putting an arm around her to guide her out of the house with the others following.

Mary stood in the doorway to the bathroom for a few minutes, just watching Marshall sat on the floor beside the bathtub as he played with Hannah, who was squealing with delight as she splashed in the water. This was why her daughter preferred Daddy to do bath time and why it took him twice as long as it took her.

She pushed herself away from the doorframe and joined him on the floor. "Hey…"

"Hey." He gave her small smile but his attention was still on Hannah.

"Just to warn you, I let it slip about the shooting…your family is probably going to want answers." She told him.

"It's okay they were bound to find out anyway." He shrugged.

"So, are you okay?" She asked. "I mean, really okay?"

"Yeah, sure…it's not like I was planning on returning to the service anyway." He answered and Mary stayed quiet, giving him chance to continue if he wanted to. "If I'm honest, I knew my arm was never going to fully heal but I guess hearing it out loud that I'll never be fit for the job I work so hard for just difficult to hear…"

"I'm sorry." She whispered, moving closer to him and squeezing his shoulder gently.

"I don't regret a thing, Mare." He looked at her. "Believe me, I'll rather face a hundred bullets then trade what we have."

"I know you would…"

"And if I had to do it all over again, I would….There was no way for us to know that we would have been tracked down so quickly and that they would start shooting and there was no way I could have gone to get treatment at a hospital without putting us both in danger." He wanted to make sure she knew he didn't blame her for anything. "I just thank god you were with me…you saved my life that night."

"You were the one who told me what to do." She replied. "I guess some of the useless information you have stored in that head of yours isn't always so useless."

He laughed. "And anyway, I like what I've been doing since we've been in Maine…I've really enjoyed working with the kids at the center."

"Who would have thought either of us could have survived without being a Marshal for four years…"

"Hey, technically still a Marshall…" He teased.

She rolled her eyes. "Dork."

"Your dork." He leaned in and kissed her but they suddenly pulled apart when they were splashed by water.

"Dada dada!" Hannah laughed and hit her hands onto the water again.

Mary and Marshall looked at each other, both of their clothes soaked with water before bursting out laughing.

Marshall reached up to the counter, grabbing a towel and handing it to her. "I wouldn't trade this…our family…for the world…I don't care what I have to give up."

Mary gave him another sweet quick kiss on the lips before laying her head his shoulder, watching their daughter playing in the water. "Me either."
