Pit had spent most of the rest of the journey to and across Valm trying to answer a bombardment of questions from the Shepherds regarding what he was capable of and how much he had seen in his life. He was happy to tell the humans more about the world they lived in, but some questions were just awkward to answer and others he tried to avoid.
Now, the Shepherds were making their way south to Chon'sin, doing their best to defeat any Underworld monsters they came across on their way. Pit had to admit fighting them was much easier in his real form where he didn't have to hold back his power and he had access to the skies. He frowned as he scouted ahead along with the trio of Pegasus Knights- Sumia, Cordelia, and Cynthia. Even if they could take to the air as well, they were still quite a bit slower than he was used to travelling, but he feared leaving them behind in case Hades had an ambush waiting somewhere.
"What's that?" he wondered as they came across some sort of shrine in the distance near the southwestern coast of Valm.
"That?" Cordelia asked, and he turned to find her pointing at the shrine. He nodded. "I'm not entirely sure, but I think it goes with a tale around this land of a mythical spring."
"Huh," he frowned and turned his attention back to it as they drew closer, and he spotted someone all too familiar waiting in front of it. "Oh, boy…" he groaned.
"What is it, Master Pit?" Sumia asked above the wind.
"Seems Nem- Hades has decided to make an appearance. I don't know what he's doing with that spring, but it can't be anything good." He paused and peered forward, but couldn't find any hint as to what the lord of the Underworld was doing there. "Do me a favor and report this back to Chrom. I'll go ahead and see if I can't put a stop to it."
"Are you sure?" Cordelia asked, and he nodded. "Very well. Luck be with you, Master Pit." He bestowed his wings with the Power of Flight and quickly closed the distance between them and the shrine to find Nemo, or at least Nemo's body, waiting for him.
"Good to see you again, Pitty," he greeted with an amused smile as Pit landed. "Did you enjoy the present I sent you on the high seas?"
"Oh, sure, I love fighting things with respawning heads," he said flatly. "What are you doing here?"
"Just having my fun," Hades replied. "How about a game of hide and seek?" Pit blinked and stared at him. "Try to come find me!" With that, he disappeared into darkness that quickly entered the shrine, and Pit summoned his bow before running after it. He made his way through low light and marble for a short time, confused as to why he didn't see any monsters.
"Just what are you playing, Hades…?" he muttered as he slowed down, opening up his senses in an attempt to find anything waiting in ambush. He blinked as he came across what appeared to be a soft blue light at the other end of the hall he had entered, and he swallowed as he made his way toward it. "This must be the spring," he thought aloud. "What's so special about it?"
"Why don't you go and find out?" Nemo's voice echoed around the hall, and Pit pursed his lips until curiosity got the best of him and he walked toward the spring, his heart rate escalating as he went. He peered into the waters illuminated with a soft blue light and frowned as he found his reflection looking back at him.
He blinked, however, and rubbed his eyes as the image in the spring briefly flickered and he found himself staring at Kuro. No, not Kuro- Dark Pit. As he stood there, bewildered, the image faded back into his reflection, and it smirked at him.
"What the heck?!" he demanded, stepping back and summoning his bow as the reflection took solid form and jumped out of the spring,
"It's not like you haven't been through this before," his reflection replied with a shrug. "This is the Wellspring of Truth. Its waters, like the Mirror you once looked into, reflect the truth in your heart."
"How many Reflective Surfaces of Truth are there?" Pit groaned. "Well, you're not another Dark Pit, so I don't really care. Go away." His brow furrowed as his reflection smiled at him. "What?"
"There's no difference between 'Pit' and 'Dark Pit,'" it said as it shook its head. "There's only you and what darkness lurks inside you."
"I'm the god of Light for crying out loud!" Pit snapped and aimed his bow. "Stop trying to mess with my mind."
"The god of Light?" the reflection scoffed. "Right. Of course." It lifted its hand and sent him flying back with a blinding strike of light before summoning a bow identical to his.
"Okay, now I'm mad," Pit growled and sprung forth, slashing his bow at his adversary, but it dodged and spun around to hit him in the stomach with the flat of its blade.
"If you're so benevolent, why did you turn a blind eye to the humans when the Fell Dragon threatened to destroy them?" the reflection went on as it fired an arrow at him, and he cast a reflective barrier just before it hit. "Why did you execute the first angel in your service?"
"She betrayed me!" he yelled as he summoned his staff and sent a trio of crescent-shaped lights toward it, sending it skidding back toward the spring.
"Now what kind of god of Light causes an angel to betray him?" the reflection asked as it retaliated with another blast of light, one Pit dodged as he grit his teeth. "What would make her choose the goddess of Darkness over you?"
"I don't know!" he shouted, directing his anger into an attack that directly struck his target, stunning it for a moment.
"Hmph," it huffed. "And now, you're threatening to kill one of your closest friends and allies. And you deny there's darkness in you?" Pit stared at it as he panted, trying desperately to keep its words from messing with his head. He looked up and aimed his staff before casting a blast that left a hole in the roof of the shrine, and he took off through it before the smoke and dust cleared completely.
"Running away won't solve anything!" he heard it call just before it appeared through the dust.
"You're lying!" he yelled, dismissing his staff and focusing his energy into his bow. "You don't know anything about who I am!"
"How can I not?" it said as it dodged around its arrows. "I AM you, Pit. I'm the reflection of the truth within you. I know you're not nearly as high and mighty as everyone thinks you are."
"Shut UP!" he nearly screamed, rocketing toward it and slashing his blades forth, scoring across its side but receiving a cut on his cheek in return.
"Deny it all you want," it said in a low voice. "It won't make it any less true." He cried out wordlessly and struck at it again, though in his desperation he became sloppy, and he missed completely only to have it strike him in the back and send him crashing to the ground. He groaned as he tried to heave himself back up, his arms shaking as he called his bow back to him.
"W-Why are you attacking me?" he asked, turning to look at it from the corner of his eye as it landed a few paces away.
"I'm only a reflection of your own desires," it replied. "And right now, you want nothing more than to finish me. I only respond accordingly." It walked closer and raised its bow, and he squinted his eyes shut as he tried to regain enough control of his body to dodge. But his eyes snapped open when he heard a cry of shocked pain from it and found it brushing away the dark red flames that had struck it.
"This world is barely big enough for two Pits," he heard a voice growl. "Let alone three."
"Kuro?" he called as he forced himself to his feet, and Kuro landed at his side and nodded, though his eyes never left the reflection. "What… What's happened to you?"
"I'll explain later," he replied. "Right now, just trust me." With that, the same flames that attacked their opponent erupted around his arm and he let out a harsh yell as he thrust them forward, striking it. He rushed toward it before it could recover and swung his bow, slicing across its abdomen. He dodged a desperate cast of light and formed what appeared to be a crystallized spike that he drove forth, and Pit cringed as it struck his reflection. It said nothing as it vanished, leaving no trace behind.
"Okay, what was that?" he demanded as his twin turned back and approached him.
"I said I'll explain later," Kuro said curtly.
"Pit!" He turned around at the sound of his voice and found Chrom and Rufure running toward him with a certain masked swordsman and Henry following, and looked up as Ephraim and Remiel joined them as well.
"Are you okay, Lord Pit?" Ephraim asked, and he nodded as well as he could as the words of his reflection weighed down on him. But he buried the feelings and turned his attention to the approaching Exalt and his wife.
"I was told you found our enemy," Chrom said once he arrived. "What happened?"
"Well, I-"
"Oh, yes, he found me!" Nemo's voice sounded, and he appeared from a burst of darkness a short distance away. "So, it's true, Kuro. I do hope you're adjusting well."
"Well enough," Kuro replied, crossing his arms.
"Wait," Chrom said as he stared at the newcomer. "You look familiar."
"I was around during your little war with the Grimleal," Hades replied from within his stolen body.
"Wait, I remember you!" Rufure realized. "You were! You fought with us using some terrifying dark magic. But… You're…"
"Things were complicated back then. You knew me as Nemo, but now I can truthfully say that I am Hades, the true master of the Underworld." He mockingly bowed toward them with a dark smile on his face before turning to the blue-eyed god. "Now, Pitty, I'm getting tired of waiting. I do so wish to rip your wings from your back and stamp out your soul."
"That's never gonna happen," he replied as he pointed his bow at his adversary. "I'll stop you just like I always have."
"We'll see," Hades shrugged. "Now. I have a little present for the humans before I go." With that, he sent forth a whip of darkness that sent Rufure flying off her feet, and she landed several paces away.
"Rufure!" Chrom yelled and turned to hurry to her, but the darkness grabbed him and pulled him back to Hades, who punched him hard in the face before grabbing his throat.
"Remember your place in this world," he growled as he held the struggling and gasping Exalt aloft. "You humans have such pitiably short life spans as it is. Don't waste it." Chrom shouted in agony as darkness erupted around his body, and he fell hard to the dirt once Nemo disappeared. He huffed and gasped sharply as he tried to recapture the air that had been driven from his body, futilely attempting to get back to his feet or even his knees. He looked up, his head groggy, as he heard footsteps approaching.
"M-Marth…?" he rasped as he found the masked swordsman running over to him, and Marth knelt down at his side and removed the mask.
"It's going to be okay, Father," she said softly, carefully rolling him to his back and propping him up in her arms as his fading vision stared into her eyes and found an all too familiar mark there.
"Lu…cina…?" Water dripped down her cheeks, though she forced a smile.
"Yes," she nodded. "Don't worry, Father. You'll be all right."
"But… but how?"
"I'll explain later," she said. "I promise." He tried to push the matter further, but before he could do so, he slipped into unconsciousness.
