Pit followed a sense of Light through the Underworld until he came to an underground passage near the City of Souls and illuminated the darkness around him with a glow from his hand. He walked in silence through the corridor and eventually reached a line of cells.
"Lord Pit?" he heard a voice call and picked up his pace to peer into one of the cells near the end.
"I'm here, Levica," he replied. "Hold on a minute longer. I'll get you out of here." He looked down at the lock on the cell's door and struck it, breaking it and allowing the door to open. He found her sitting inside, her knees drawn up against her chest. She stood at the sight of him, her bright green eyes flickering with fear and concern.
"Lord Pit," she pleaded as she stepped toward him. "Nemo is… Whatever he's done, it's not his fault. He's-"
"Under the control of Hades," he interrupted. "I know." He bit his lip and lowered his head as he took her hands in his and looked up again to meet her frightened gaze. "I'm not going to beat around the bush, Levica. Nemo…" His voice caught in his throat. "He's dead." Shocked disbelief illuminated in her eyes as she withdrew her hands and cupped them over her mouth.
"No…" she squeaked.
"I'm sorry," he said weakly. "I'm so sorry I couldn't save him." She fell to her knees and wrapped her arms over her midsection as she screamed her love's name, shaking as she started to cry. He knelt down next to her and pulled him into his arms, and she leaned into his chest as she sobbed.
"Nemo," she said again in a broken voice. "Oh, Nemo…" His heart wrenched in his chest as he hugged her, guilt making him feel sick.
"Levica, please forgive me," he pleaded. "I tried to think of something, but… he and Hades were too tightly bound together. I couldn't stop one without the other." She didn't reply immediately, but pulled back to meet his gaze with watery eyes.
"Remiel and Henry," she choked. "Are my sons okay?" He nodded.
"They're fine," he said. "They're… with him now. I came immediately after we stopped Hades to find you." She dipped her head and dried her face, though her tears quickly replaced themselves.
"I know you did everything you could," she said softly. "I don't blame you. And… Nemo would have wanted Hades stopped at any cost, even his life." He found himself lost for words, and they were both silent for a time. "…May I… see him?"
"Of course." He stood up and helped her to her feet and the two quickly departed the cell.
He led her back through the Underworld to the chasm where Hades had fallen, and she let out a soft but agonizing sound at the sight of her children below, still holding their fallen father in their arms. They landed and both Remiel and Henry looked up.
"Mother," Remiel breathed, and Henry hesitantly stood up before running over and hugging her tightly.
"Glad you're okay, Mom," he told her in a gentle voice. "We were worried." She placed her hands to the sides of his face and kissed his forehead.
"I'm alright," she replied. "I'm so relieved you and your brother are well." She took his hand and slowly made her way to Nemo's body, where Remiel looked up at her with a regretful gaze.
"I-I'm so sorry, Mother," he managed to say. She shook her head and knelt down, brushing her hand over Nemo's hair and leaning in to kiss him goodbye.
"Oh, Nemo…" She shut her eyes and pulled him in against her for a moment. "You've suffered so long. I hope you can finally find peace, my beloved." Henry bent down and slung his arm over his mother's shoulders while Remiel took hold of his father's hand. Pit gave them some time to mourn together before he cleared his throat and spoke up.
"Levica," he said, catching their attention. "And both of you as well. Like I told you earlier, I spoke with Nemo through a dream a couple of days ago. He made his peace with the knowledge that he was going to die." He paused as this knowledge registered with them, and Levica hugged her lost partner once again. "He gave me a message for each of you that he wanted me to pass along." Their grieving gazes fell on him, and he took a deep breath.
"Please, Lord Pit," Levica said. "Tell us. I gladly want to hear his last words for us." Her sons nodded in agreement. He took a moment to collect his thoughts, trying to recall exactly what Nemo had said to him.
"Levica," he began. "Nemo thanks you for all you've done for him. Even as he fades, he loves you with all his heart." Levica blinked away a new wave of tears and again brushed her fingers through Nemo's hair, more slowly this time as she observed his still face.
"And I love you, Nemo," she whispered. "For eternity, you will always be my other half…" Pit waited another moment before continuing.
"Henry. He said he's sorry that he couldn't be a father to you. He hopes the family you still have will bring you happiness without him." Henry's heartbreak glimmered in his eyes as he dipped his head and looked back to his father, perhaps simply unable to find his voice and having no words in reply.
"And Remiel," Pit went on. "Nemo's beloved first child, heir, and equal." Remiel bit his lip and squeezed his father's hand tighter. "He's so proud of you and despite your arguments, treasures you as his son." He paused in a futile attempt to keep his voice from breaking. "His hope for you is that you found something in him rather than seeing the monster he once was."
"Father," Remiel managed to say as he wiped away the water on his face. "Y-You're not a monster. I'm so sorry I ever said that… Please, forgive me…"
"Nemo loved you all with every part of his being," Pit told them as he approached and knelt down nearby. "And wherever he is now, I know he still does. The three of you brought out the best in him and I think you helped him find his true self."
"You did as well, Lord Pit," Levica replied. "I know Nemo was honored to have your friendship. Thank you for freeing him…" He dipped his head and stepped back to give them a chance to say their final goodbyes to Nemo, retreating several paces to join his family, and Lucina hugged him gently while Kuro's hand came to rest on his shoulder.
"So, now what?" the red-eyed god asked once they pulled back.
"Remiel should take over," Pit replied in a low voice. "But I don't think anybody expects him to immediately. They all need time to grieve and adjust. I think we do too."
"It's going to be weird not having Master Nemo around anymore," Ephraim said. "He's been around all my life. It'll take some getting used to."
"Nemo's been around pretty much since the world was created, if I'm right," Pit agreed. "He may not truly have been 'Nemo' back then, but he still existed as a spirit." He paused. "All these changes in the divine order can't be good."
"What do you mean?" Kuro wondered.
"I mean how I became the god of Light, you're now the god of Calamity, and the 'lord of the Underworld' has changed twice now. Or will, anyway. I guess I worry about how this could impact things long term."
"We've been around for almost 1500 years," Kuro pointed out. "How is that not 'long term?'"
"Our connections to the past are fading," Pit explained. "And… I think it's strange." He shook his head. "But now's not the time for that. Right now, we just need to make sure everyone- us, the humans, and the Celestial Balance- recovers as well as possible." His companions all voiced their agreement softly and he looked back over to Nemo's family.
I really hope I'm wrong, he thought, wrapping his arm around Lucina's waist and pulling her a bit closer to him. I promise, Nemo. I won't let your death be in vain.
