Chapter 10
"You okay?" Nick asked Charlotte.
"Yeah I'm fine," she replied as she continued to stare into space.
"You seemed tired," he noted.
Damn police instincts she thought to herself.
"I just had a long day," she said.
While technically it was the truth, she couldn't just tell him what she discovered hours ago. Hell she doesn't even know if he was going to investigate the hit and run. If he did, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise.
"I just need to see if the bandages I put on earlier if they're on right," she said, getting up from the couch. She stopped short and looked at Nick. She quickly turned towards the stairs and slowly headed towards the bathroom.
While she was trying to collect herself, she couldn't help but notice that she had gotten pale which was no surprise since she was in the hospital. She hoped that this would be in the past and would move on.
When she got downstairs, she saw Nick getting off the phone looking more frustrated than ever.
"Is everything okay?" she asked.
"No it's something with the case," he replied.
"The robbery?"
"No it's…" he stopped speaking for a moment before he looked up at Charlotte.
"It's what? Nick what's going on?" she asked, as she sat down next to him on the couch again.
Nick took a deep sigh before he spoke again. "I didn't want to tell you because you were still recovering in the hospital and I didn't want any more stress on you but I've been looking into the hit and run case," he admitted.
"I see," she said.
"You're not mad?" he asked in a surprised tone.
"I'm more of surprised/not surprised I mean how can I not be mad at you? I wished you would've told me," she replied.
"I know but I wanted to know more on what happened that day," he said.
"Did you find anything?" she asked slowly.
"Only a few witnesses had come forward with some information but it's only about the car and license plate but person wise not looking so good," he said.
She didn't say much as she glued her eyes to the TV. She should probably care less on what was on the TV but she needed a distraction or close to a distraction.
Later that night, Charlotte tried to get some sleep. She kept waking up, tossing and turning lightly so that way she wouldn't have any more pain in her shoulder. The one time she wanted to sleep, she couldn't get any.
And when she finally did fall asleep, she wounded up in a nightmare or sorts.
Dream sequence
Charlotte was catching her breath as she kept running down the hallway. The scenery looks very familiar to her but all was set in her mind was to get out of this place.
She ran towards a door and flung it open. What she didn't expect was someone on the other side. Someone that she hasn't seen in a long time.
The person smiled at her wickedly and then the second person appeared behind them. Charlotte could only stand there in shock before she was dragged away into the room and by the time she screamed it was too late.
End of dream sequence
Charlotte gasped loudly as she shot up out of bed. She jumped out of bed, waking up Nick in the process and ran into the bathroom. She flicked the light on and her hands scanned over her body to see if everything was still the same. Her bandaged hadn't fallen off and she pressed her hands on the counter as she tried to regain composure.
"Charlotte, are you alright?" Nick's voice asked.
"I'm fine just a nightmare. Go back to bed," she replied.
"I can't not when you're like this," he said.
"Nick I told you I'm fine," she said, snapping her head up at him.
Once he saw the look on her face, he knew that she wasn't alright. Whatever she dreamed of, really did spook her. He took a hold of her wrist and pulled her into his arms. He rubbed her back as she grasped on to him as if she was afraid to let go.
"I'm here I always will be," he said softly.
They continued to stay like that for a while until he led her back into their room and got back in bed. She continued to stay in his arms until they both fell asleep.
"Man, poor Charlotte," Hank said the next morning at work.
"I know, I feel bad for her I wish there was something I can do to help her," Nick said.
"You can only do so much, but she's a fighter and she's going to get through this," he assured his old friend.
He could only hope that everything would be okay after this.
"Come on we got a call," Hank said.
"For what?"
"Seems like our burglar strikes again and according to the victim, we might find the burglar after all," he said as the both left the station.
Back home, Charlotte tried to text Nick. She wanted to know desperately what was going on but she also knew that she was determined to figure out what was going on.
Sitting in her office back at the house, she opened up her laptop and scrolled through her emails since she had no idea when she checked it last. The last two emails were something she moved to her saved folder. One was Alex reminding her about another bridesmaid fitting coming up and the second was a work one reminding her about the banquet.
She completely forgot about the wedding with everything going on. Once going through her emails were done, she opened up the search engine and got straight to work.
It took her a while to find out what she could find until she clicked on a website. Scrolling through the webpage, she typed in the words she needed to look up. When she clicked, search the computer was taking its time. Just when she was about to hit refresh, the page loaded and she was surprised and shocked to see what it showed her.
Without taking her eyes off the screen, she reached for the phone and quickly dialed the number. It rang a few times before someone picked up.
"Hey Rosalee remember what you told me to look up?" Charlotte asked.
"Yeah, you find something?"
"Oh yeah and I think I have a rough idea who scratched up my shoulder too."
While the guys were just leaving the crime scene; since they had the right amount of information to find whoever it was, Nick's phone rang. He saw it was Rosalee and answered it immediately.
"Hey glad I caught you. Remember on how I was telling you about the Balam?" she asked.
"Yeah what about them?"
"Well I had Charlotte looked them up on the internet…."
"Whoa, why?"
"Oh relax it's not like she's carrying heavy books. Besides the point, she looked up something and what she found was very surprising."
"Go on," Nick said with an edge of worry in his voice.
"Well, what she found out was that whoever the Balam came in contact, they gave scratch marks to whoever came in their paths," Rosalee replied.
"So that meant it was Charlotte who got those marks," Nick said.
"I'm afraid so and whoever it was, they probably have it out for her or not," she said.
"Thanks for that," Nick said, hanging up his phone.
Nick could only stare around in disbelief before he went to follow Hank back towards the precinct.
