Slow Way Home
Chapter 37

[Day 45 of 45]

It was late as Jim stared out the window of the observation deck she'd found herself on. She watched the blackness wishing she were home as they'd planned to be. They'd changed the arrival date, pushing it back by at least a day.

One day closer to Christmas, Yule, and every other winter holiday celebrated on earth. One day closer to missing the holiday.

A tear rolled down her cheek and she found herself wiping it away. She shouldn't be crying over the holiday. She was being selfish but she was giving herself that moment to be selfish – to want to be with her children on a holiday that had come to mean a lot to her. More than it had before she had Mandy and Jory. This should be their first Christmas as a couple. Instead they were stuck on the Enterprise, separated by space.

"Thought you might be here," Gaila said as Jim heard the swish of the door shutting. Then the woman walked over to Jim's side. "We will get back to earth."

"I know. I'm being stupid, selfish, probably a bit superficial, petty…" Jim stopped when she felt Gaila's hand collide with the back of her head. "Hey…"

"Done insulting yourself?" Gaila asked and Jim nodded. "Good. Because we will be there. So you should stop worrying. Your Vulcan – as yummy as he is…" Jim gave Gaila a look who just grinned impishly, "is getting on everyone's nerves. Apparently you've got him blocked and he knew you would object if he went looking for you."

Jim couldn't help the small smile that slid on her face. It was very true. Spock knew enough to not try and track her down when she went for shelter. She did it several times on Vulcan. And the smile slid from her face.

"I'll calm him," Jim promised before moving to stand.

"Good," Gaila said while moving to stand. She looked pale but better. She wasn't as sick as she had been. "Let's get you to your husband before he sends out a search party. His Alpha-Male, Protective instincts are definitely on full blast around you."

Jim just laughed, her morose feeling gone. Sometimes it was good to have friends.
