Third person POV
Matthew walked into the large meeting room underneath SHIELD headquarters with a very mixed and nervous aura around him. He knew he had, at this point, failed his mission, he knew that HYRDA would not be pleased.
"Agent Philips, what do you have to report about the target?"
The loud voice of HYDRA's leader boomed throughout the room. Matthew winced, not sure if he wanted to go through with this. But he had to, now there was no backing out, no escape. He licked at his chapping lips anxiously, squeezing his hands together tightly behind his back.
"I-I have...lost contact with the target, sir."
Matthew spoke meekly, not brave enough to meet the eyes of his employer. The tension in the room increased ten fold when those words fell from the agents mouth. The young man shut his eyes tightly in anticipation.
"What do you mean, 'you've lost contact'?"
The leader spoke, his voice eerily calmer than Matthew had expected. The mans eyes opened and he finally gained the courage to look in the general direction of the HYDRA leader. Matthew fumbled for an explanation but the only thing he really could do was tell the truth.
"I-I betrayed the target's trust. I hit her in a fit of anger and she threw me out."
Matthew confessed. The leader's eyes widened in disbelief. The young agent was quick to reply before the HYDRA leader became too livid.
"But, I plan to fix it! She's too docile not to take me back into her home if I apologize and make amends with her."
He lied smoothly. Matthew knew getting Eris' trust back would be difficult, but at this point, he didn't really need it anymore. He had a spare key to the apartment-if he needed to get inside to capture her, he could do so easily. He would simply have to look out for her 'guard-god' Loki. He could be a problem and would definitely get in the way of his mission. Sure, he could kill the god, but he had no idea how he would manage. The voice of his boss pulled him back to reality.
"How do I know we can trust you not to make the same mistake?"
The leader challenged, raising a brow at the brunet man before him. Matthew fidgeted a bit, thinking of a pleasing answer.
"Trust me, sir, this was a one time thing. Even if she doesn't let me back into her life willingly, I can just take her by force."
The agent explained, smiling slightly. The leader was silent for a moment, contemplating the young man's words.
"What about the god, Loki? He's very attached to the girl, surely he will try to stop you."
The leader interjected, narrowing his eyes at the mortal man. He was scrutinizing him, his movements, his words, searching for deceit. After so many years with the target, the possibility of him actually growing fond of her was very real. He could be trying to deceive HYDRA to keep the girl safe. But as the young man continued to talk, there were no traces of lies or dishonesty.
"In the time that I haven't been with her, I have been observing Loki. It seems he has a new distraction to give his affections to."
Matthew said, smiling smugly. The more he thought about finishing this nearly-lifelong mission, the happier and more relieved he felt. He would be done with all of this, and he would be payed off handsomely. He wouldn't have to work another day in his life.
"A woman? Do we know her?"
The leader inquired, surprised by the new developments. Matthew shook his head.
"No, sir. But I know that she intends to keep him with her as long as possible. She may even be a possible ally."
The man replied, standing straighter, now that he felt he was out of danger.
"Hmm. Fine, you can keep your position in this mission. But if you fail us again, you will be killed for insubordination. Am I clear Philips?"
The leader snapped. The agent nodded.
"Crystal, sir."
He crooned, taking his leave.
So this chapter kinda explains why we never met Matthew's parents or are never mentioned, because he doesn't have them. He's been training with HYDRA since he was young enough to talk and working with them since he was in middle school. Taking Eris and turning her into HYDRA has been his life mission for the last eight years. And to be honest, guys, I might not even go into detail or even incorporate this any further into the story. I just really wanted to get rid of Matthew. I hate that fuck-stick. Then again, if you guys like the idea of seeing more evil Matthew and HYDRA shit, let me know and I'll be happy to oblige. Xoxox babies!
