Author's Note - Not happy with where this ended, but if i ended it where it felt right, it would have been too short, and if i waited for the point i planned to end chapter 13, it would be far too long.

Chapter 13 - A Friend Gained, A Father Lost

"It's like Upper Yard... And the water! It goes on forever!" Callan looked out at the expansive ocean, lost in awe.

"Not forever. Just a very long way." Kuina grinned. Handing him a rough map of the world and pointing to their location. "We're here, about halfway through Paradise. The world is divided in half by a single great continent of connected islands called the Red Line. It stands 10,000 meters over the surface of the water with sheer cliffs on all sides. Only one man has ever been known to climb it, and only briefly. The world is cut in half again by the Grand Line, which is bordered on both sides by the Calm Belts."

As the navigator continued her lesson on the geography of the lower world, Soul worked to move their supplies back onto the ship. The waivers were stored below deck in case they ever needed them again.

"The first half of the Grand Line is called Paradise, and the second half is called the New World. The four seas are called North Blue, East Blue, South Blue, and West Blue. Ace, Roger, Olivia and I are all from East Blue. Soul and Cora are from Paradise." Kuina continued. Callan nodded his understanding.

"Everyone, ship approaching! Prepare to fight!" Ace shouted from the figure head, leaping down to the deck and calling his crew to arms. Roger had his sword in hand immediately and Soul pulled his scythe from nowhere and stood beside his captain. Cora had her knives slotted into the strap on her leg, and the twins each carried sharp daggers. Callan was armed with a few dials and a few sea stone gems attached to his arms and legs.

"Captain... I have a bad feeling about this. I don't recognize the flag, and I have heard of almost every pirate in Paradise." Soul had his fists clenched on the shaft of his scythe. "We might want to consider a different place to defend."

"Where do you recommend?" Ace asked, ready to trust his first mate.

"One of the caves, maybe. Although that would give away the location of the cloud path. We would risk endangering the Skypiean people. The ship loses the advantage of maneuverability while we're on shore, and we lose the advantage of stability while we're on the ship. We don't have time to launch without a Coup De Burst, so I would recommend fighting a few yards in from the water's edge where we can spread out on solid ground." Soul gave his report on their situation.

"I can not disagree. Everyone, off the ship. Take a position you can defend up the shore. Stay in pairs, and within sight of everyone else. Be ready to defend the ship if we have to." Ace directed them. They scattered on the land and faced the approaching ship. A dragon with crossed swords was on the flag.

As they watched, a dark form rose from the approaching ship. It grew at an incredible pace, black wings swelling to darken the sky. The body between them grew to enormous proportions, a head laden with jagged, razor sharp teeth extending from it. Claws like swords hung from muscular legs. The monstrous dragon flew closer, roaring with fury.

"Scatter. No pair fighting. Don't let him have the chance to attack two of us at once." Ace directed. His crew moved to new positions, distancing themselves from each other. "Defense when he's facing you, offense when you have a blind spot to strike."

"Yes, Captain." His crew responded.

"Kuina, can you jump me onto his neck? He has to be a Zoan user. My sea stones might be able to force him back into a human form!" Callan called to the navigator. She nodded and positioned herself near him, in line with the dragon so she could grab him mid jump.

Without warning, the dragon dived, spinning quickly through the air, teeth parted. Soul spun in front of his captain, whipping the blade of his scythe across and raking a deep gash across the dragon's muzzle as it pulled out of its dive. At the slowest point of it's arc, Kuina jumped, snatching Callan on her way and depositing him on the back of the dragon's neck.

As the Shandian wrapped his sea stone studded legs around the beast's neck, it shrank and collapsed to the shore. The man, stunned by his involuntary transformation, tried to wrestle the sky man from his back. The man's crew was just reaching the shore, and meeting with blades and fists.

"Tashigi! Get Smoker and head to Sabaody. I'm afraid we may be down another ally." Sabo called out. Ahead, he could see the Black Wing pirates fighting the Straw Hat pirates, as his Alliance Pose indicated the presence of both Ace and another ally. Rayleigh.

Sabo clenched his teeth. Rayleigh would not have given up his Alliance Pose willingly. With his powerful haki, stealing it without alerting the powerful ex pirate would have been nearly impossible. That left only one option. The Dark King Silvers Rayleigh was probably dead. At over 100 years old, it was still a surprise. Sabo had met the man twice, and thought of him as indestructible. A mighty force of nature like Dragon. Immortal.

But now, he was gone, and all evidence pointed to one conclusion. Nathaniel had taken his pose. That meant the rogue emperor could locate three of them at any time. As part of the security of the system, none of the allies knew who the others could find. They all had a needle to the Straw Hat ship, which had clearly been transferred to the Legacy Storm, and they each had a needle to two others. Sabo's pointed to Ace, Rayleigh, and Shanks. He was reasonably certain that Shanks had Marco and Marco had him, since they had pulled off a group meeting easily.

"Sabo! We have movement!" Coby shouted, pointing toward a small, fast ship that was rapidly approaching the fight. The Revolutionary leader picked up a pair of binoculars and zoomed in on the ship.

"It's Law! What the hell is he doing here?" Sabo growled. His spies informed him that the coward had returned to his remote island and was commanded to stay there, and now, here he was. Miles from where he was supposed to be.

On the small ship, Law was terrified. He had received word that Rayleigh was dead, but the man's needle had been moving toward the Straw Hat crew for days. His daughter was in danger. It would take a monstrous force to defeat the Dark King, and that was a force he didn't want his daughter to be at the mercy of, even side by side with Luffy's son.

He drew his sword and ran his small vessel aground behind the opposing force, expanding a room of control around himself and began tearing the hearts out of the pirates he could reach.

The Black Wing pirates were caught off guard by the man attacking from the rear. With their captain still wrestling with the winged man and most of their crew trading blows with the rest of the pirates, the few who were not occupied were redirecting their efforts to the new comer.

Ace dodged and struck with haki coated fists, but these pirates were in a separate league from the warlord they had fought before. His blows landed with all the effect of punching brick walls. Around him, he could sense his crew fighting furiously, but with little more success than he was having. They were defending themselves, but they were loosing ground.

Then he noticed a new force on their side. He caught sight of yellow and brown and dark eyes and hair. He only mistook it for Cora for a moment before he came to understand the situation. Law had come, and to his surprise, he was grateful.

With a ferocious kick, the metal bars came free of the wood. Steel grinned and forced the gap wider before slipping into the adjacent cell. He stepped out the open door and looked around. He was lucky he was the only prisoner, or he would not have been able to escape that way. He could hear a battle going on outside. Excellent. A distraction.

He climbed the stairs quietly, keeping his eyes out for anyone on guard, but it seemed the entire crew was busy on the shore. That was just fine with him. When he reached the railing, he was there were two other vessels, one large ship, and one tiny boat. The man who led the crew that had captured him was wrestling in human form with someone. It looked like he had wings. That was new.

There. There was his target. Valkon James. Steel found the ladder to the ground and gathered his bearings. His eyesight was unparalleled, putting even his legendary father to shame. He kept track of the man he hated, and picked his way through the battle, dodging blows as they came his way. Then he found what he needed. He took off at a sprint, ducking and weaving between the fighting pirates, beginning to draw the attention of all sides. With nearly a fifth of the men on the shore looking at him, he rolled under a sword and came to his feet with a rifle in his hands.

Across the battlefield, Ace was in trouble. A powerful man was beating him back, a heavy sword making his bones ache beneath his haki with each impact. Just as his arm was knocked out of socket by a painful blow, a shot rang out across the shore. The man that had been a moment from dealing a death blow dropped like a stone. Valkon James never saw the bullet coming.

With the sudden loss of their first mate, the Black Wing pirates began to retreat. Several rushed to their captain, fighting the winged man off and carrying their blood covered leader back to their ship. Near the shore, Law stood in a ring of bodies, severed hearts at his feet. From his vantage point higher up the shore, Steel emptied the rifle. Each shot ended a life.

The battle was over. Not a victory, but not a defeat either. Ace looked around and took count, sighing in relief when he found not a singe one of his nakama had been killed. The enemy ship was moving away. Around the shore, he saw over a dozen bodies.

"Trafalgar Law. I thought you were going to remain on your island. What brought you here? How do you keep finding us?"

"Your father's shipwright created a special log pose that could lock onto another of it's kind. One was issued to each of his allies. Each Alliance Pose was locked on to three others, one being Luffy's own, and two to other allies. Mine was set to find Rayleigh and Sabo. Rayleigh is dead, and his pose was moving toward you, so I knew something was wrong. I... I couldn't leave my daughter in danger like that..." Law sighed, looking at Cora with remorse. "I'm sorry for the life you lived with me. You deserved much better."

"You protected me today... And you let me go with Ace. I'm happy... So thank you." Cora smiled at him, then cried out in horror as he collapsed. They heard the gunshot that brought him down just before his body hit the sand.

Without hesitating an instant, Steel rushed forward, taking aim and firing his last shot at the retreating ship. Even with his hawk-like eyesight, he couldn't tell if he had hit his mark. The Black Wing pirates had an excellent sniper, but they would never know if he had aimed for the ex warlord, or if he had missed their escaped prisoner.

"Dad! Please, don't die!" Cora dropped to her knees next to the gasping man. Olivia was at her shoulder in an instant, pressing a small bundle of bandages to the wound. There was no use. He was dead, his brain just didn't know it yet.

"I'm proud of you. I saw you fight. You're going to be better than I was... I love you Cora. I'm glad I was able to see you smile, just once." Law grinned at his daughter, his breathing becoming shallow and rapid as blood filled his lungs.

"I love you too, Dad... And don't worry. I am happy... I'll smile for you again." She tried to keep herself from crying. After spending her life being neglected, she still felt her heart breaking at his death. He had fought for her. He did care about her, and he was her father.

"Cora... He's gone." Olivia gently pulled the shaking girl away from the body. Soul came to her side and hugged her tightly as she sobbed quietly into his shoulder. Ace finally turned toward the man who had saved his life.

"I'm in your debt... You saved me and you avenged the death of my nakama's father. Who do I owe my thanks to?" Ace asked, shaking hands with the boy.

"Dracule Steel. Who are you? You are the enemy of the Black Wing pirates, and that makes you as good as a friend to me." Steel tossed the now empty rifle to the side, looking around at the bodies. "Your crew is strong... You fought one of the four emperors and lived..."

"I am Monkey D. Ace. Captain of the Straw Hat pirates. Dracule... Are you related to the swordsman Hawkeye?"

"I am his son, as little as I may desire to be so. He was determined I would be a swordsman and reclaim the title of greatest in the world, but I had other plans. I found I was skilled with a rifle and pursued that instead. I was not allowed to leave our home, so I escaped." Steel locked eyes with the pirate captain. "My father spoke highly of Monkey D. Luffy and his first mate, Roronoa Zoro. I'm honored to meet you."

"The twins are the daughters of Roronoa Zoro. Kuina and Olivia. That man who attacked us... He is one of the emperors?" Ace asked. Steel nodded.

"Nathaniel of the Black Wing pirates. He was once the apprentice of Blackbeard. He offered my father a place on his crew. The one you were fighting was his first mate. Valkon James. He was a vile man and I had business that needed settled with him." Steel kicked the body irreverently.

"Our crew needs a sniper with your skill... Would you join us?" Ace asked. Steel grinned and nodded.

"I will. At least for now. I left home for adventure. If your are getting into fights with men like Nathaniel already, I'm sure I'll find plenty of adventure with you." Steel turned to the others, frowning with sympathy at Cora. "That man is Trafalgar Law. He's her father?"

"Yes. He was far from a shining example of fatherhood, but he redeemed himself today. He came to her defense when he had no reason to." Ace frowned sadly at the broken body.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save him... I never expected their sniper to take a shot from that range." Steel sighed and shook his head. "So, you have the son and daughter of two ex warlords, as well as the twin daughters of your father's first mate. Who are the other three?"

"The one with the red hair is Roger, and the one with the wings is a new addition to the crew, Shanda Callan. The one comforting Cora is Soul. Roger is our cook and swordsman, and Callan is a thief and observation haki master. Soul is our shipwright and a powerful fighter, as well as my first mate." Ace introduced the crew to the sniper.

"Captain, we should get moving. We're too open here." Soul said, moving to keep himself between the shore and his captain and the crying girl. Cora was slowly pulling herself together, doing her best not to look at the crumpled body of her father.

"Right. Everyone, on the ship." Ace motioned for the crew to board the Legacy Storm. "This man will be joining us. He is called Dracule Steel, and he will be our sniper. You can trust him."

The eight pirates ascended the ladder, separating on the deck to launch them out to sea. Cora collapsed against the railing, hugging her knees to her chest. Soul was forced to leave her on her own for a moment as he went with Kuina to set their course off the G.P.S. Roger sheathed his sword and raised the anchor as Olivia lowered the sails. Ace helped her, then took his usual spot on the figure head. Steel tried to stay out of the way, observing the crew go about its duties with eyes that missed no details. Callan was little better, completely lost in the rush.

After a couple of hours, they were out at sea, and things were calming down. The crew gathered together in a round room below deck, with bounty posters around the walls.

Ace had them take seats and then they spent the next hours ensuring every member of his crew knew the others.

Monkey D. Ace, age 17, with a bounty of 104 million beli. The captain of the crew. Son of Nami and the Pirate King, grandson of the Revolutionary Dragon, and great grandson of Garp the Fist. Powerful and skillful fighter and tactician.

Roronoa Kuina, age 17, with a bounty of 37 million beli. The navigator, and daughter of Nico Robin and Roronoa Zoro. Possesses the ability to jump from location to location. Apprentice of Nami.

Roronoa Olivia, age 17, with a bounty of 37 million beli. The doctor, and twin of Kuina. Shares a devils fruit ability with her sister. Both have black hair in pony tails that hang between their shoulder blades, sea green eyes, and a single golden ear ring in their left ears.

Roger, age 20, with a bounty of 52 million beli. The cook. Son of Makino, a bar owner from East Blue. Red hair, and a skillful swordsman. Carries a black and orange katana with a straight blade.

Soul, age 19, with a bounty of 78 million beli. The shipwright and first mate. Son of an ex marine once spared by the Pirate King. Called the Reaper by many throughout the Grand Line. Possesses the ability to store objects in space that does not exist.

Trafalgar Cora, age 16, daughter of Trafalgar Law. Black hair and dark eyes, tall and lanky. The musician of the crew, and proficient with throwing knives. Shy, and possibly crazy. No bounty.

Shanda Callan, age 20, son of Kamakiri and Laki or the Shandian people. Small white wings, and no bounty. Dark brown hair, and skilled fighter with dials and sea stone. Master of the use of mantra.

Dracule Steel, age 16, son of Dracule Mihawk. Dark hair and sharp features, with striking golden eyes. A deadly sniper, with a bounty of 65 million beli.

The crew spent the day getting to know each other, and by the time they went to sleep, they felt comfortable with the new additions. With their course set, they spent the following days learning to rely on each other. Life was uneventful until the evening after the battle, when they were gathered in the kitchen for Roger's reproduction of Skypiean food.

Having eaten a portion of the interesting food, Soul pulled an apple from nowhere and bit into it without looking. Immediately, he gagged and dropped the apple to the table. The crew looked around, concern and surprise on their faces. Ace noticed what was wrong first. The apple had a spiral pattern on it.

"That apple was a devil's fruit... Olivia! Get him onto the deck! If the fruit isn't compatible, he'll be torn apart!" Ace shouted, leaping to his feet and throwing open the doors of the kitchen. "We may be able to use sea water to suppress it!"

The doctor and the cook carried the convulsing man out onto the deck and propped him against the railing, ready to lower him into the water if necessary. Before they could do so, he finally became still, grimacing in pain as he looked around, disorientated.

"Soul, are you okay?" Cora's eyes were wide with fear. She couldn't stand to see him die right after her father.

"I think so..." Soul shook his head and tried to stand. He winced as his muscles loosened. "What happened?"

"You ate a devil's fruit... And you survived. You're very lucky." Olivia said, smiling at the man.

"Where did I get a devil's fruit?" Soul asked.

"I... Can't be sure until I know what the ability is. But I have a theory..." Ace grimaced, glancing at Cora. Before turning back to Soul. "When Law died, the apple you had stored was the closest host... I think you just inherited his Paramecia type fruit. The Ope Ope no Mi."

Soul turned to Cora, and was surprised to see her smile.

"It suits you. You were much kinder, but you do remind me of him a bit. I think he would be happy that you have his power to support Ace." Cora said. Soul sighed with relief when she made it clear she did not hate him for it.

"We should keep an eye on you, until we are sure there aren't going to be any negative side effects." Olivia said. Ace nodded.

"She's right. Don't go locking yourself in the workshop today. Stay on deck. A little sunlight will do you good." Ace laughed at the indignant look his first mate shot his way.

Under the orders of the doctor and captain, Soul spent the day on deck, learning to use the new ability, and talking with Cora and his captain. It was like flexing a new muscle. He concentrated on the board Cora had practiced on and was barely able to break it in half.

"My father used his sword to focus his power... You could try it with your scythe." Cora said, encouraging the man. Soul nodded and pulled his weapon from the air. He closed his eyes and envisioned his blade extending past itself. With a slow and deliberate swing, he opened his eyes to see the board shatter and float in the air, completely enslaved to his will. He pulled the pieces together with his mind, guiding the power with his scythe.

"Well done, Soul. That was impressive." Ace said, patting his shoulder.

"Thank you captain." Soul grinned. He could get used to this power.

"They pulled it off." Koala smiled and nudged her leader. Sabo nodded and allowed himself a small smile of his own.

"Yes, so they did." Sabo said, looking out at the ocean passing by. "Things are moving quickly. They're on their way to Water 7 already... They will reach the New World soon at this rate."

"The government will be preparing to attack. If I were them, I would cut them off at the remains of Enies Lobby." Koala suggested. Sabo considered this.

"They just survived their first confrontation with one of the emperors. I believe we need to have faith in them and allow them to take their own path. We'll stay out of their way until they reach Raftel, then we'll step in and take care of the government." Sabo decided.

"Are your sure they are ready for that?" The woman asked.

"No. But they will be. Just like Luffy." The revolutionary leader laughed. "The Will of D will always rise to the challenge."

"The Will of D... Should we send a protective detail to keep an eye on Garp?" Koala asked.

"Yes. Send Smoker. I imagine he'd like to see an old friend. And send Kuzan to keep an eye on Dragon. He can use visiting Robin as an excuse." Sabo said. The woman nodded and turned to make the arrangements.

Sabo remained at the railing. Garp. Dragon. Ace. Three men who carried the Will of D. Count to four. Not three, but four. Sabo thought back. For a while, there had been Garp, Roger, Dragon, and Saul. Roger died, and Ace had replaced him. Saul died, and Luffy replaced him. Ace died, but there was not another waiting for him. Luffy died and the second Ace had been born. They were down one, though.

It clicked in his mind like a puzzle piece falling into place. There was another D out there. That was the only possibility. Somewhere along the way, another D has been born that no one knew about. A fourth D. A fourth haki. A fourth kind of fruit. It was all coming together. Luffy had told them it was coming. Now it finally was.

"Coby! Alert every informant we have to keep their eyes and ears out for another who carries the will of the Pirate King!" Sabo ordered. The ex marine nodded and went to spread the word. The search was on. It stood to reason that if Roger and Luffy had left everything in place up to this point, then he may also have made preparations to find the fourth.

He thought about the clues Luffy had left for them. Everything he had done had a reason behind it. They just didn't all see it. The logic of a dozen strategic minds could never unravel what the magnificent man had done on instinct. His actions had shifted when he approached Raftel. They had found the final poneglyph, they had defeated the emperors, they had fought the world on the shore of that last island. Then Luffy had began making preparations for the future.

"We'll retrace his final steps... Somewhere along the way, he must have left a clue to the fourth D." Sabo said to himself. "We'll work backward from Loguetown. That is the best place to start."

"Ace... There is something I have to tell you." Callan said quietly, looking slightly nervous. "You're my captain now, so I can't keep it a secret from you."

"What is it?" Ace asked, turning to the Shandian.

"I have a devil's fruit. I found it years ago, but never dared tell anyone. The last Skypiean to have an ability became a tyrant, and our people a wary of anyone with their power. I hadn't planned to tell anyone, but I saw how calmly you all accepted Soul's new power..." Callan pulled a strange sky fruit that resembled a pineapple from his bag, offering it to his captain. Ace shook his head.

"It is yours. Any strength you can gain is strength you can use to protect your nakama." Ace grinned. "You will need to practice with it, whatever it is. We've got a few days before we reach Water 7. Make good use of it."

"I will, captain." Callan looked at the fruit, almost fearful. What if he became as dangerous as Enel? No. He thought about Olivia, who may be the kindest person he had ever met. Kuina, who was fiercely loyal to her captain. Soul, who treated his power as a convenience that he shared with his friends. Devil's Fruit did not make you evil. Enel had chosen how to use his power. Callan would make his own choice.

He bit into the fruit and his face twisted with disgust. They really did taste unbearably awful. Immediately, he felt the change. A weight was growing on his back. His eyes widened as he looked over his shoulder and saw his own small white wings swelling.

"My wings... This is amazing..." Callan stretched the new wings wide and stepped back. "I wonder if I can fly with these..." He took a few steps away from his captain until he had room to flap, then he leaped into the air, pushing the air down beneath him. He lifted into the air and laughed happily. "This is amazing!"

"Woah, Callan, cool trick!" Roger leaned over the upper railing, watching the man flying in large circles over the ship. "Now you can catch some birds for dinner!"

"Hito Hito no Mi, Model : Tenshi... That is a Mythical Zoan fruit! I've read about it! It's been lost for decades, since before Gold Roger set out!" Olivia called out. Callan was enjoying the weightlessness he felt on his newly functional wings. There were legends that their Shandoran ancestors were able to fly, but no one knew if that was true.

The winged man came to rest on the edge of the railing and felt his wings shrink back to normal as he willed them to.

"That is a very handy power... I want to see how you fight with the others now. I need to know what you're capable of in a fight so I can plan accordingly." Ace said. Callan nodded and hopped down to the deck.

"Yes Captain."

Over the next days, Callan was run ragged. When he wasn't sparring with every member of the crew, both as partners and opponents, he was teaching them to use Mantra, or what they called Observation Haki.

Ace followed his instructions as well, working to improve his own skills in order to protect his crew. Steel had a natural talent for the skill, while Cora had all the foresight of a brick wall. The twins were picking up the art slowly, but steadily, while Roger had excelled at first, but seemed to hit a road block after a few days. Soul not only practiced Mantra with the crew, but studied Ace as he practiced his Armament Haki, translating the principals as he went, and within a week, he could stop a blade with his bare hand.

"It has been too long, Robin." Kuzan hugged the woman tightly, smiling over her shoulder at the former revolutionary leader. "Dragon, you left the revolution in good hands."

"I'm pleased to hear that. Are you here on business, or vacation?" Dragon asked, shaking hands with the former marine admiral.

"A bit of both. I'm supposed to keep an eye out for trouble here, but I'm allowed to visit family and friends while I'm here. Sabo suspects trouble may come here, and wants someone stationed near by." Kuzan explains, looking around the peaceful village.

"I'm glad you could visit. It's been lonely without the kids here." Robin smiled at him.

"I promised I would visit. I wish Sabo had given me some time off before the twins set out, I would have liked to spend some time with them." Kuzan took off his dark sunglasses and turned back to the woman. "Have you been well?"

"I have. Any news about what the government is up to?" The archaeologist asked. Kuzan nodded.

"They're trying to assemble a strong collection of pirate warlords to replace those that resigned in fear. They haven't expelled Buggy yet, despite his alliance with Shanks, but they have added at least two ability users and two without abilities. I don't know anything about their abilities, but we've heard rumors that they are very powerful." The former marine said. Robin nodded.

"That is what I expected. They won't risk attacking and giving them more victories until they think they can take them on. They are at least learning from their mistakes, it seems... Do you think they stand a chance, if the government and warlords come after them?" She was worried for the safety of her daughters, but Kuzan patted her shoulder reassuringly.

"They'll be fine. They survived a fight with one of the emperors not two weeks ago, and their crew is up to eight. They're on their way to Water 7 right now, and I'm sure Franky will pass on a message for you if you ask."

"One of the emperors? Already?" Robin was surprised. She couldn't imagine their crew taking on someone like Kaido at that point.

"Yeah. Sabo was surprised. I wouldn't say they are as strong as that makes them seem, but so far, fortune has been on their side every step of the way. They just need to pray it does not run out." Kuzan said.

Dragon nodded. He knew what trouble could come if their luck ran out.

I thought a nice summary of the crew might be helpful at this point, now that they have eight members. There is only one more crew member rolling around my head, but they aren't fully developed yet. They may just not happen, sad though it may be.
