Five Years Later
Part 79
By the time they were finishing up brunch that day, Blaine smiled as quite a few of them were heading out, including Justin and Brittany who seemed to have hit it off. Before they headed off to one of the museums, Morgan came over to Blaine and told him that she'd keep an eye on the two of them. When Blaine laughed, Morgan smiled since Rachel, Thad, Santana, Jordan, and Jeff were going as well. "Hey, I know you Blaine and even with the others around, they don't know Justin the way I do."
"That's true. Just remind him that he better be a gentleman or Santana will kick his ass, and then I will."
"Duly noted." She then leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. "I hope you and Sebastian are able to enjoy the rest of the day even with everything that's going on."
"Thanks, as we hope so as well."
Once the two of them were done talking, everyone said their goodbyes which included Brittany giving Blaine a big hug. While the two said their goodbye, everyone gave them a bit of privacy as they spoke for quite some time. After the group going to the museum was gone, Blaine and Sebastian thanked Nick and Wes for coming into town once again. It didn't come as much of a surprise to hear that Nick was going to make the most of the visit into the city and surprise his girlfriend who was working. When Nick headed off, Wes headed back to the apartment with Blaine and Sebastian as they both felt they could use another person to bounce ideas off of.
The moment they walked into the apartment, Wes looked at them both. "It's a bit different, isn't it?" Sebastian said as they made their way further in. "My Mom designed it for us."
"It suits you both well." Wes told them as they reached the living room. "How long till the move is complete?"
"A couple of weeks if everything goes as planned." Blaine replied while taking off his jacket. "I have a bit more stuff to pack up. But it needs to wait as I'm not leaving my place till after my final concert. Once that's done, we'll make it official."
"Are the two of you counting down the days?" Wes asked as they all sat down.
"No, as that would drive us crazy." Sebastian told him. "And we have so much going on, time is going to fly. Plus, if it takes a bit longer to get the last of B's stuff over here, it's okay since we have till the beginning of July to have his apartment emptied."
"But it'll be done before I leave for tour." Blaine chimed in with. "I don't want to leave it up to Bas or my parents to finish." While he spoke, Blaine and Sebastian each opened up their laptops on the table. "By the way, thank you for talking with Santana about everything."
"You don't have to thank me Blaine, as I know how hard coming to terms with what happened is. And you and Sebastian have enough on your plates that you can't be the ones helping everyone."
"Still, we appreciate it." Sebastian told him as he opened up his email. "Mind if I ask where Chloe is this weekend?"
"She's visiting her parents actually, but will be home this evening." Wes replied. "Now, do you two have any idea of how Sam is going to take the news?"
"Clearly he's not going to take it well." Blaine said as Sebastian was reading an email from his Dad. "Much like you did, he's going to ask me why I didn't tell him. But, I don't know if he's going to be completely shocked considering the little slip up Santana had when they spoke."
"Nothing she could've said would prepare him for something like this Blaine." Wes told him. "While I had an inkling something was wrong, I never allowed my mind to go there." He then looked at Sebastian. "Is everything okay?"
"Will the two of you excuse me, I need to go and call my Dad?" Blaine nodded then received a kiss from Sebastian. "I shouldn't be too long B." Before he left, Sebastian picked up his laptop and took it with him. Once he left, Blaine leaned back on the couch and took a deep breath. There was something about the look in Sebastian's eyes, that had him concerned.
"Care to tell me what's going on?" Wes asked as he leaned forward in his chair.
"My parents, along with Xavier are trying to figure out what they can do to keep Kurt away from me." Blaine replied. "The last thing I expected to hear last night when I came off stage was to hear that Kurt was in attendance once again."
"I'm so sorry that happened to you again Blaine. One would think considering how he feels about you, he wouldn't constantly be showing up at your performances."
"One would think that, yet he does. He's constantly showing up at places where he knows he's not going to get a warm welcome. Not to mention, by now he should know that my security team won't let him near me."
"That's very true." Wes replied. "They certainly don't let many people get near you. Amazing how you now don't mind having them around considering how you first felt."
"Tell me about it." The words were leaving Blaine's mouth when his computer went off as Sam was calling. "You don't have to stay for this."
"If you don't mind, I will since Sebastian is a bit preoccupied at the moment and I know it's not easy for you to talk about." Blaine then mouthed a thank you to Wes before accepting Sam's call. It wasn't much of a surprise that Sam was a bit shocked to see Wes sitting nearby when Blaine answered. Nor was it when he asked where Blaine was as he didn't recognize the surroundings. Having the call start off simple was exactly what Blaine needed knowing things wouldn't stay calm for much longer.
After the pleasantries were out of the way, it wasn't long till Sam asked about what Santana had hinted about a couple of weeks prior. The moment Blaine asked if Sam was alone, let him know whatever they were going to talk about was serious. Once Blaine began to talk, it wasn't long till Sam began to freak out and it was in that moment Sebastian came walking back into the room. When the infamous question, why didn't you tell me came out, Sebastian was taking his seat beside Blaine.
"I didn't tell you because I…I didn't want to drag you into my problem." While he spoke, Sebastian began rubbing Blaine's back gently as he could already see him tensing considering Sam was freaking out on the other end. "Not to mention, what could you have done from Ohio?"
"Oh, I don't know, gotten my butt on a plane and told your husband off!" Sebastian had to stifle a laugh as he'd never seen Sam so riled up before. "Blaine, he had no right to treat you like that."
"I know that. Looking back, I should've left much sooner but since it happened so gradually it…"
"Started to seem normal." Blaine nodded in response to Sam's words. "Even though things didn't feel right."
"That sounds about right to my mindset back then." Blaine told him before continuing on to tell him about the information Hunter found out which sent Sam off on another tangent. Even Wes looked over at Blaine and Sebastian the longer Sam went on. From what the two knew of Sam, this reaction seemed completely out of character, yet Sebastian and Wes understood it. "You can breathe sometime Sam." Blaine said to him as he was still going.
"Considering the crap he gave you for your one screw up, he had a full, blown affair. I can't believe it."
"Well, we've got proof if you want to see it." Sebastian told him. "There are copies of messages between him and the other man, as well as quite a few pictures. And these messages and pictures aren't necessarily family friendly."
"Is this true Blaine?"
"I only looked at one picture as I didn't really care to know more about what he did behind my back." Blaine told him. "But from the one picture I saw, yes, it's true. And from everything Bas and Hunter told me, it is clear Kurt had an entire life outside of our marriage."
"Burt's going to be pissed when he finds out."
"He knows." Blaine said quickly. "And he doesn't believe me as according to him, Kurt is incapable of doing any of the things I've accused him of."
"I'm sorry, but while Kurt can come off as rather innocent, even I know he's not. Anyone that went to McKinley with him knows he can be a bit manipulative." Sam's eyes then went even wider if that was possible. "Does Rachel know?"
"Yes, Rachel knows and she's kicked him from her life." Blaine told him. "I told her and Santana at the same time as this wasn't something I could necessarily tell one and not the other.
"How'd they handled it?"
"They handled it as one would expect them to. How about you as you have a rather befuddled look on your face?"
"I'm in a bit of shock, to put it mildly." Sam replied. "Yet now, the changes in you during that time make sense. I'm so sorry I didn't speak up sooner Blaine. I mean, more than once you were questioning things when we spoke. I should've pushed you to open up more."
"You don't have to apologize Sam; you didn't have all the facts. There is no way you could've known what I was dealing with. Not to mention, if you pushed I probably would've said even less at that time."
"I'm your best friend Blaine; I should've known more was going on than you were saying."
"He did an excellent job of hiding it Sam." Wes said to him upon noticing Blaine looking a bit overwhelmed. "I felt the same way you did when he told me. I felt I should've known something was going on. Yet I didn't. All we can do now is support him and be here when he needs us."
"Is that your way of saying I can't go off on Hummel?"
"Exactly." Sebastian replied. "Because if you go off on Hummel, he'll come after B and that's the last thing anyone wants or for that matter, needs."
"Good point, I hadn't thought of that." Sam then tilted this head. "Please tell me I'm not the only one."
"You're not." Blaine reassured him while the other two nodded. "I'm sorry for not telling you Sam, but as I told everyone else, how could I possibly talk about something I didn't understand at the time. It took me quite a while to be able to talk about it. Even now when I do, I don't share everything."
"So there is more."
"There is more detail, which you don't need to concern yourself with. Plus, it's not something I'm comfortable talking about." Blaine noticed Sam's eyes glance over towards Sebastian. "Yes, Bas knows, but he's the only one as the day he and I spoke, I completely broke down. You know as much as everyone else. And like everyone else, know this isn't something I really want to talk about again."
"I…I get that as it's not really something I want to talk about either. Just as I get you opening up to Sebastian and not anyone else."
"Also, if you want to talk about it Sam, call me as it's a very touchy subject with the girls." Sebastian added. "Rachel is working through it with Thad, while Santana actually speaks with Wes." When Sam looked surprised, the trio laughed.
"Much like you and the girls, I was the only one still in Blaine's life really." Wes told him. "So, like you three, I know how it feels to have been there, yet not know what was happening. Sebastian already offered to talk, but feel free to call me as well."
"I just might do that." Sam replied, thankful for another person to talk to about this as he was a bit overwhelmed.
While Blaine was telling Sam, Kurt was looking at his Dad across his apartment as the two really hadn't spoken since they returned early that morning. If there was a time where Kurt had no idea what was going on with his Dad, this was it. Burt was looking at him in a manner which was really making him feel uneasy. "So, are we going to talk or sit in silence until you fly back to Ohio tonight?" Kurt said as he sat across from his Dad with a fashion magazine in his lap
"I'd like to talk, but I honestly don't know where to start." Burt told him as he held his coffee cup between his hands. "The last thing I expected to hear last night was that you tried to hit Blaine from Rachel, and then for you to confirm it."
"It would've been pointless to try and deny it since Harwood and Sterling were so quick to point out that they were there as well when it happened." Kurt replied as he saw the disappointment on his Dad's face. "I couldn't help myself Dad. If you saw how smug the two were together…" Kurt noticed a change in his Dad's expression as he spoke. "You saw it too when you were talking to them. There is an air of arrogance around the two."
"I will say that seeing Blaine with Sebastian, I saw a different side of him that I wasn't expecting." Burt told him. "The two are clearly in sync with one another in a way I didn't expect. I thought I'd be able to have a conversation with Blaine, yet he told me it wouldn't happen if I wanted Sebastian to leave."
"Let me guess, Sebastian didn't let you get a word in."
"He did, but he was quick to jump in when he felt I was attacking Blaine. That boy certainly has a way with words."
"Not surprising, did he talk about me?" Kurt asked, curious about their conversation.
"He did." Burt told him. "Mainly he stated that I didn't know you as well as I thought I did any time I questioned what Blaine was telling me."
"You know me Dad."
"Do I?" Burt asked as he looked at his son. "While I don't want to believe what Blaine told me, I find it hard to believe it was all a lie Kurt."
"What did Blaine tell you?"
"He basically confirmed everything his Dad told me, but with more detail." Burt told him. "Not to mention, Sebastian said there was proof that you had an affair while the two of you were married." Once he spoke, Burt noticed Kurt move around in his seat. "So, why don't you tell me what part of it is true?" Kurt's gaze then moved towards the floor. "Kurt, you need to tell me the truth."
"Does it even matter what happened between us, we're divorced now?" Kurt said as he looked at his Dad who clearly believed Blaine on some level. "Why can't we move on?"
"I think that stems from the fact that you're showing up at his shows. And that seems to have something to do with the fact that you don't like Blaine's new boyfriend."
"Do you?"
"Not really, but what Blaine does with his life is no longer my concern unless it affects you." Burt told him. "Yet, I'd like your side of things so I don't get blindsided should I run into the Andersons again."
"You're not going to drop this, are you?" Kurt replied before leaning back in his seat. "I don't see the point."
"Kurt, clearly the way you're avoiding the subject means there is truth to what Blaine told me. I'd like to know how much." Burt then leaned forward in his seat. "Were things really that bad between the two of you?"
"I guess that all depends on your perspective Dad." Kurt told him.
"Did you really have an affair?" Burt asked, and then watched his son's expression change. "Kurt."
"Yes, and I don't regret it." When Burt reacted, a smirk of sorts crept to Kurt's face. "Not the answer you expected, was it Dad?" Burt shook his head as he was honestly shocked. "I still don't know how they found out since it wasn't brought up when we divorced."
"If you were so unhappy, why didn't you leave him?" Burt asked.
"Honestly?" Burt nodded. "I wanted to hurt him like he'd hurt me in the past."
"Kurt!"
"I swear if you start defending him, you can leave right now."
"I'm not defending him, I just don't understand! You were so angry at him after he cheated in high school, how could you do the same?"
"Actually, it was worse as I had a relationship with this person and it lasted for several months." Kurt told his Dad, unbeknownst confirming what Sebastian had said. "As I said, I don't regret it. Heck, I didn't regret it when it was happening because Blaine and I were barely talking at that point. I'd gone back to work for Isabelle, and he was constantly rehearsing. Or at least that's what he told me he was doing. For all I know, he's been with Smythe longer than they're admitting to since he goes to school here in the city as well."
"If things were so bad, why not end them?" Kurt just looked at his Dad. "Or for that matter, why did you fight the divorce once Blaine filed?"
"It's as I said, I wanted him to hurt."
"Kurt, I didn't raise you to be such a spiteful person. If you'd never forgiven Blaine, why'd you agree to marry him?"
"I thought I had, but then things changed once we got married." The way Kurt had rather calmly answered, had Burt shaking his head as this was honestly the last thing he expected to hear, especially after everything Kurt had previously told him. So to not only been told about what happened on New Year's Eve, to then have the affair and how long it lasted, Burt was in utter disbelief. "I don't get where he said I verbally abused him, but if he didn't like what I had to say at times, I guess it could be considered that I had."
"Kurt!"
"You're the one that wanted to hear it Dad!" Kurt's voice louder than it had been. "But anything I said to him while we were married, he deserved!" Burt got up from his seat at that point and began to pace the room, trying to make sense of what he was hearing. "Blaine's not perfect you know."
"I know he's not Kurt." Burt snapped. "But he doesn't deserve to be treated like that!"
"And I did?"
"No! I said before, if you were so unhappy you should've left! You really believe he was cheating on you as well, don't you?"
"I do, but he denies it to this day!" Kurt replied. "But there was no way he was rehearsing as much as he was, considering how he was performing."
"What happened then as the man I heard on stage last night was great?"
"I…I don't know. The first time I heard about him playing, I didn't believe it considering the mess he'd become. Then some friends convinced me to go and well, it was the Blaine you heard last night. The performer everyone believed he could be." The condescending what Kurt acted as he spoke the last bit let his frustrations show.
"What has you going back to see him?" Burt asked as he sat back down.
"The first time I went back, was because I'd heard from either Rachel or Santana that Blaine was dating again. Yet neither would say much about who he was dating, just that he finally was again." Kurt told him. "So, my curiosity got the better of me as I wanted to see the guy he was presumably hooking up with."
"Hadn't you dated since you two got divorced?"
"I had, yet Blaine supposedly hadn't. At least that's what I got from the girls though they rarely spoke about him once we split. I came close one night, but the two disappeared into an awaiting car. That's the first night I saw that he'd gotten back in touch with all his old Dalton buddies. Then, it wasn't until New Year's that I found out it was Sebastian he was dating."
"That must've stung considering all the history between you boys."
"It was a shock to put it mildly. Then of course, once I spotted them, Sebastian was his smug, self-righteous self and everything snowballed from there."
"Considering how heated the divorce was and how you and Sebastian felt about each other, and clearly still do, that doesn't surprise me one bit." Burt said to him as calmly as he could knowing Kurt would close up if he yelled. "I take it that's when…you know…you…"
"Tried to hit Blaine." Kurt finished for him as it was clear it wasn't something Burt wanted to say. "Yes. But it didn't happen as Sebastian's ever so charming friend, Hunter, stopped me from slapping him."
"Slapping him?"
"Yes. I didn't try to punch Blaine, I tried to slap him."
"Had it happened before?"
"Possibly."
"Kurt…had you hit Blaine before." Burt asked rather sternly.
"Dad, getting into this now isn't going to change things that have already happened." Kurt told him.
"True, it wouldn't but I have a right to know!" Burt said before taking a pause to calm himself once again. And seeing Kurt close up, he knew he had to change his line of questioning. "With as bad as things are between you and them, why do you keep going to see him as it's clearly tense?"
"Most of the time, I'm with friends. And you said yourself, he's good."
"But that doesn't mean you have to try and see him after the fact. Clearly Blaine wants nothing to do with you, and his friends will do what they can to see to it you don't get near him."
"They don't need to as Blaine's security guard sees to that."
"That's who the man that was with Blaine was?"
"From what I can make out, it's his head of security." While he spoke, Kurt noticed that his Dad wasn't looking him in the eye. "Dad, I know you're disappointed by what I told you but it happened and nothing can change it."
"You're right; I am as I thought I raised you better than that!" Burt then took a deep breath. "But you're correct; nothing I say can change what happened while you and Blaine were married." Burt said to him. "Yet, I can make a request of you that I hope you'll comply with."
"And what would that be?"
"Stay away from Blaine!" Once the words were out of his mouth, Kurt looked at his Dad. "I'm not saying you can't go listen to him play, but…don't try and talk to him. He made it pretty clear when the two of us spoke; he wants nothing to do with you. For that matter, stay away from Sebastian and his friends as well because nothing good can come from it." When Kurt didn't speak, Burt turned his body in his seat so he was looking directly at him. "I'm serious Kurt, stay away from them!"
"Does that include Rachel?"
"No, but I would stay away from her if she's with her boyfriend as he clearly doesn't like you."
"He's not quite the type of guy you imagined her ending up with, is it?"
"Not really, he's very…"
"Arrogant, smug…I could keep going but I doubt you'd approve of what I'd say if I continued. I can tell you, Thad is a lot like Sebastian."
"All the more reason for you to stay away from her should he be around." Burt said to him. "Can you please try and do that?"
"I can try, that's all I'm going to say." While Burt wished for a different answer, he knew he had to accept what he got as pushing Kurt would probably make matters worse. Burt knew himself well enough that should he push anymore with as angry as he was, things could get ugly between them. He could only hope that Kurt realized that things could progress in a way he didn't expect considering how Blaine's career was going.
By the time Blaine had finished talking with Sam, it was clear he was emotionally drained. While Sebastian wished he could put off talking to him, he knew he couldn't. Yet he knew to put it off until Wes left as it would only upset him as well. So once he was gone, Blaine knew something was up when Sebastian took his hand and brought him onto his lap once they reached the couch. "What now?" Blaine asked as he glanced at him, feeling Sebastian wrap his arms around him.
"My Dad feels that you need to sit down with Vincent to see what they are able to do because as of this moment, your options are limited." Sebastian told him. "While Kurt is a pain in the ass, he really hasn't broken any laws yet but he's treading water in that regard."
"I figured as much." Blaine replied as he leaned against him. "I'll talk with Vincent about it tomorrow. From what Scott had said on the way here last night, he was going to be speaking to him about it as well."
"That doesn't surprise me. How are you feeling about how things went with Burt?"
"I'm fine with it as I can see how he wouldn't want to believe it. Not to mention, he told Burt I had cheated on him again according to Rachel. So, he probably felt I was only trying to save face by saying what I did to him."
"Isn't that a bit extreme B?"
"Maybe, but I'm not going to get worked up over what Burt thinks about me. It has no bearing on my life anymore. You know me Bas, if I had my way, no one would be having to deal with any of this and we'd only be concentrating on what's currently happening." Sebastian nodded before leaning his head on Blaine's shoulder. "You tired?"
"A bit, but I really need to get some studying done as I have an exam this week." That was all Sebastian needed to say, for Blaine to get up off his lap. "B."
"I'll go make some coffee, and you can get started."
"What are you going to do?"
"I've got some songs I can work on." Blaine replied. "Not to mention, I need to give Cooper a call as I promised him I'd keep him in the loop in regards to what's going on." Blaine then leaned down and kissed Sebastian on the top of his head. "Go get your stuff and get to work." Sebastian smiled, and then watched Blaine head for the kitchen before he went to get what he needed to study.
Once Blaine returned with coffee, Sebastian was already studying. So after giving Sebastian his coffee, he headed towards the other side of the living room to give Cooper a call. With everything that had been going on, it wasn't too surprising that Cooper answered rather quickly. "Expecting my call Coop?" Blaine said with a laugh because of the prompt answer.
"No, but seeing you call after we've recently talked has me a bit concerned." Cooper told him. "So, what has that jackass done now?"
"Cutting straight to the chase, huh?"
"I figured it was the easiest way to get answers."
"I'm really sorry about how you found out about everything Coop, honest."
"I know you are Squirt." Cooper said to him, not even getting a reaction out of Blaine by using that nickname. "I had a long talk with Dad after you and I spoke and he told me how hard it was for you to open up to them. He also said you wanted to tell me in person and not over the phone."
"It's true, as I felt you deserved to be told in person. But, I was calling to tell you that Burt showed up at my show last night and waited for me afterwards."
"What did he want?"
"To ask me about what Dad said to him." Blaine told him. "He didn't believe what I told him."
"That's because he thinks his boy is innocent. You and Sebastian should show him one of the pictures."
"Tempting as that might be, that could give him another heart attack and I won't do that. Even though it hurt that he thought I was lying, a parent is going to support their child."
"If we weren't in such a formal setting, I wouldn't have been surprised if Dad would've gone off on him that night. I can't remember the last time I saw Dad like that Blaine, he was furious." Cooper told him. "The fact that Dad was able to hold it together, still shocks me. He loves you so much Blaine, as does Mom."
"They love you too Coop."
"I know. What I'm trying to say is, while things were crazy for a bit between you guys, they've always loved you."
"I know that, even though I had my moments when I didn't think they did because I'm gay."
"Part of their reaction stemmed from being worried about you." Cooper told him. "Then, you and Dad butted heads because you're both too much alike. You expected a bad reaction so you twisted the things he did."
"Trust me Coop, I now know I was part of the problem. But we've gotten passed that and I know there isn't anything they wouldn't do for me."
"Good. By the way, they really like Sebastian." Hearing that from Cooper, Blaine couldn't help but smile before glancing at Sebastian who was studying. "Not only as a person, but as your boyfriend because they can see how much he cares about you."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. They asked me what I thought about him as well. Dad laughed when he heard Sebastian gave me a hard time from the start."
"Yea, he laughed when Bas and I told him about how the two of you first met, as did Mom. I've got to tell you Coop; it's a nice feeling knowing everyone in the family truly likes him and isn't just being polite to him for my sake."
"Understandable. Hell, you've got to know if Mom and Dad didn't approve, they would've spoken up about the two of you moving in together."
"I had that feeling as well considering everything I've already been through." Blaine told him. "It really could've happened sooner, but we wanted to be responsible."
"The fact that you handled it the way you did, speaks volumes Blaine. Proves that you and Sebastian know this is a big step."
"We do."
