#43 Crash

"C'mon get up sleepyhead." Casey Venturi said, shaking her sleeping husband to get him up. "Okay I'm going." He mumbled tiredly, and Casey smiled triumphantly, ready to leave to get ready for her day. All of the sudden, Derek grabbed her wrists and flung her on the bed on top of him. Casey giggled and Derek smiled, his eyes still closed. "I have to get ready!" She protested weakly, but Derek still wouldn't break his hold. Derek smiled, "Well you can't go anywhere until you kiss your wonderful husband first." He demanded flirtatiously. "Well where is he?" She mocked, and Derek's eyes peeped open, and she pecked him quick on the mouth. Casey finally got Derek up and in the shower by bargaining to make him breakfast while she did so.

After a quick shower, Derek strutted into the kitchen where Casey was finishing up making him an omelet. "Smells good!" He said, taking a seat at the kitchen table. "Thank you." She said. Derek dug right in, and shoveled a mouthful into his mouth, "Delicious" He mumbled, food stuffed in his mouth. "You are just charming." Casey laughed good-naturedly. Casey picked up her bag and car keys, "I should probably get going now, I have a meeting down at the firm in 30 minutes." She said, with a smile, "Okay bye!" He mumbled, still deeply involved in his breakfast.

LATER*

Derek was furiously typing away at his computer when suddenly there was a knock at his door. He groaned, he had a ton of work to do today and if he wanted to get out of the office before midnight, he was going to have to hope interruptions were kept minimal. "Come in." He called. It was his boss, who also happened to be a good friend of his, Richard, and he looked pretty nervous. "Hey Rich, what's up?" He asked, looking up at him. "Derek.. It's Casey." He said quietly. And with that one sentence, Derek's world felt like it stopped, he knew something was wrong.

As Richard told Derek what happened, Derek felt himself go on to autopilot. Everything around him seemed to go mute, as he ran out of his office building, and jumped into his car. He zoomed down the streets way over the speed limit, only caring about one thing, Casey.

In what felt like both hours and seconds, Derek soon reached Toronto Hospital. He ran to the ICU. He went to run past the front desk and into the care areas, despite the protests of the secretary. He was almost successful until a guard stopped him, "Sir you can't go in there without a doctor's permission. Hospital policies." He crossed his arms, blocking Derek from the door. Derek frantically ran his fingers through his hair, "I don't give a fuck about these stupid policies! I need to get in there! Casey is in there, and I need to see her!" Derek cried, getting increasingly frustrated. "Sir you need to calm down." The guard said, getting agitated. "Well I can't when s-" Derek was cut off by a third man, "Hey hey what's going on here?" The man asked, breaking between the two, causing both men to cease their arguing. Derek spoke up, "I got a call saying my wife was here, and I want to see her, but this man is making it difficult." Derek said angrily. The man, who Derek guessed to be a doctor nodded his head understandingly, "Ok, what's your wife's name?" The doctor asked. "Casey Venturi. Her maiden name is McDonald. Please I need to see her." Derek plead. "Ok, Mr. Venturi, I'm Dr. Simms and I am actually taking care of your wife." He introduced himself, shaking Derek's hands, "Follow me in." Dr. Simms, leading Derek past the guard and through the doors. "What happened?" Derek asked nervously. "Well your wife was involved in a serious automobile accident. It seems like the other driver was texting and he hit your wife in her car head on. Her car was completely totaled, and she had to be removed using the jaws of life. She had four broken ribs, and a sprained spinal cord. It was pretty bad." Dr. Simms said gravely. "Is.. is she going to be okay?" Derek asked nervously. "We are very confident that with some care from us and recovery time, she is expected to make a full recovery." Dr. Simms answered honestly. He stopped at a door, and Derek assumed this was where she was. "Although she is going to be fine, I have to warn you, what you're going to see is going to be very hard. But we can assure you that she will be fine." He said calmly.

Derek took a deep breath and turned the knob to open the door. When he walked in, he felt his heart drop. His beautiful wife laid there, looking so small and broken in her bed. Her face was scratched up and puffy, her body red, with blood streaked through on bandages that were scattered around her body. Her eyes were closed, but her breathing was steady. Derek couldn't help but feel tears well up in his eyes. He took a seat next to her bed and grabbed her hand. "Please Case, wake up. Be okay. I can't live without you." He whispered his voice wobbly, and kissing her hand tenderly. Suddenly, Casey's eyes started to flutter, soon opening up. "Derek?" She asked, her voice weak. "Yes, it's me baby, everything is going to be okay." He said soothingly. She reached out and gently pulled him close, and Derek let out a sob, "Shh , Derek I'm fine. I'm going to be okay. I promise." She said, kissing him gently on the cheek.
