#48 Gone

Tick, tick, tick was the only sound Edwin Venturi could hear in the long hallway of the city hospital, that he was in. Finally he reached room #301, the one where his wife Lizzie was in, the one where their world fell apart…

Five Hours Earlier…

"We're going to have to start going baby shopping soon." Lizzie said to her husband as she flipped through a baby book. "I'm also going to have to go clothes shopping soon too, I'm starting to show a bit." She added, looking down at her stomach, which was now quite round and seemed to be getting bigger by the day. "Definitely. So do we wanna find out the gender at our next appointment, or are we getting surprised?" Edwin asked, taking a bite out of the sandwich that he just made. "I think we should be surprised. What do you think?" She replied. "I agree. I think loose and relaxed is more us." He agreed, sitting down next to her, kiss her cheek. "One thing about being pregnant, I have to use the bathroom all the time." She said, getting up and heading to the bathroom.

Edwin just smiled and flipped on the television. All was right in his world until he heard a piercing scream from Lizzie. Edwin quickly ran to the bathroom and opened the door to find complete horror in front of him. Lizzie's hands were smeared in blood, her upper thighs, too, and tears were heavily streaming down her face. "We have to get you to the hospital." Edwin said urgently. Grabbing her hand and a towel, and quickly ushering her out of their house.

Present…

Edwin carefully poked his head into Lizzie's room, and found that she had not moved an inch since he left to go the cafeteria to get some food for them. Her legs were together, and her body was in a small closed ball, and she lay on her side, facing away from the doorway.

He slowly walked in, careful not to startle her. "Liz?" He said, as if he was asking a question. She didn't answer, only giving a quiet grunt; Edwin sighed and raked his fingers through his short, curly black locks. He took a seat on the seat next to the bed, where she was still facing the other way. "Lizzie.." He started, with no response, "Honey, please look at me." He said gently, but with more force. When he got no response, he got up and went to her side. When he saw her face, glistening, fresh with tears, "Liz, talk to me." He said desperately. "About what?" She burst, sitting up quickly and forcefully, "Careful Lizzie!" Edwin pleaded, quickly cut off again by Lizzie, "About the fact that our baby is gone? Or should I talk about the fact that as a woman I failed because I couldn't carry our child? Or should we talk about the fact that I am completely and utterly devastated and I have no idea how I'm going to get over it." She finished, her strength, slowly wavering into a quiet, wobbly voice, tears slowly making their way down her face again. Edwin leaned into her and held her tightly, and to his relief, she held him back too. He broke the hold and kneeled down to look at her, he grabbed her hands and looked her dead in the eye. "Hey, listen to me. You did not fail as a woman, I'm not even sure what that means, it just happened, something you had absolutely no control over. You did nothing wrong okay? Never believe that any part of it was your fault, okay? Any as for getting over it, I have no idea what we will do. I'm devastated to and have no idea what to do in this case. What I do know is that I love you and we are going to get through this together." He told her honestly. "I just don't know how that's possible." She squeaked, and he shook her hands, "I do, and I don't know how, or even how long it will take, but I know that together we will be okay." He assured her, and held her tightly, trying to comfort her and himself, as he didn't know what else he could possibly do.
