Five Years Later
Part 87
Since almost everyone had come into town for Blaine's graduation party, they decided to make the most of having so many of them in one place. By the time they all found one another at their meeting spot in Central Park, it was clear some had been there longer than others. When Wes looked at Jeff over his sunglasses as he was stretched out on a blanket with Morgan's head on his chest, Jeff smiled up at him. "Please don't move on our account."
"Good, as I don't plan on it as we were out late." Jeff replied with a smile. "Make yourselves comfortable as it's a beautiful day. It might not be the beach, but it'll have to do as it isn't quite warm enough to head to one."
"Interesting comment." Nick stated as he and Sophie set their blanket out as they'd arrived with Wes and Chloe. "Any specific reason behind it?"
"How about the latest picture Sebastian posted on his travel adventures blog?" Jeff told them. "I don't know if it's from today or yesterday, but they're clearly enjoying themselves."
"Sebastian has a blog?" Quinn asked as she sat down, clearly puzzled by what she'd heard. "He doesn't seem like the type."
"He started it his freshman year of college when he started to travel a lot." Hunter told her. "That's when we learned that he was one hell of a photographer. I'm pretty certain he's traveled through most of Europe."
"I'd say that's pretty accurate." Thad added. "Along with most of the Caribbean and Mexico."
"From the sounds of it, I should take a look." Quinn told him. "By the way, where is Rachel?"
"She and Tina were stopping somewhere on their way over." Thad replied. "They should be here soon."
"Has Tina come down off of her high of seeing Blaine?" Morgan asked as she raised herself up slightly. "She was too cute in Providence and that carried over on Thursday night."
"For the most part." Quinn told her. "The one thing she's still trying to adjust to is how cute Blaine and Sebastian are together."
"That's something that's going to take time." Beat said. "It took us all time to adjust to that. I told her more than a few times during our drive that seeing the two together might not be what she'd expect."
"Yet you didn't prepare me for how adorable they are together." Tina stated as she and Rachel walked up as he spoke. "They're so affectionate with one another, it's….CUTE!" The others couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, though they really couldn't argue with her.
"Just fair warning Tina, don't say that around Sebastian." Santana told her as they got comfortable. "Or Blaine for that matter."
"Why?"
"Anytime someone mentions how they act, they tend to rein in their behavior." Jeff replied. "And that's not something they should have to think about."
"Though they do since, they tend to not do much of anything after a show in public." Morgan added. "Talia and I have each heard people refer to Sebastian as Blaine's assistant since he always seems to be with him."
"Is Blaine not going to say anything about the fact that he's gay?" Tina asked as she was certainly out of the loop in a lot of regards since Beat didn't think it was his place to answer certain questions.
"He doesn't think he needs to, but he's not going to hide it." Jeff told her. "Blaine doesn't feel he needs to make an announcement about who he chooses to love. Should someone see him and Sebastian kissing or holding hands, he'll then address it if asked, but not until then."
"But isn't he doing just that by not being himself?"
"One might see it that way, but Blaine's only trying to keep some of his life private." Morgan replied, understanding where she was coming from. "Already, he's had to share more of himself than he was probably prepared to with as fast as everything is happening."
"When you put it that way, it makes sense as Blaine is a pretty private person." Tina said before looking at those she went to school with. "I must sound ignorant when it comes to all this."
"No, you're new to it, there is a difference." Quinn told her. "We're all still adapting. Those that spend more time with them, are adjusting a bit quicker as they're more aware of what he's dealing with."
While Quinn was speaking, Rachel's phone began to go off once again earning her looks from Thad as well as Tina since Rachel's phone had gone off quite a bit while they were out. "He won't give up, will he!" Thad stated in frustration. "How many fu…freaking times has he called?" He had to curb his words as there were plenty of children around them.
"I honestly don't know." Rachel told him as she leaned against him. "With as persistent as he's being, I'm now slightly afraid to answer." It only took one glance up at him for her to reach for her phone and hand it to him.
"Rachel's phone."
"Put Rachel on the phone Harwood!" Kurt told him, frustrated that he answered.
"You know my voice, I'm touched." Thad replied in a mocking manner. "But sorry, that's not going to happen."
"Damn it Thad, put her on the phone!"
"I won't as she doesn't want to talk to you." Thad told him. "The only reason your call got answered is your driving her batty with you incessant calls. Can't you comprehend the fact that she wants nothing to do with you?"
"Put her on the damn phone!"
"No! But since you seem intent to speak with her, maybe if you tell me what you want to talk to her about, something could be arranged." The way Thad spoke to him clearly had gotten everyone's attention.
"It's none of your business!"
"Anything you want to talk to Rachel about is my business." Once he spoke, Thad leaned his head down and kissed Rachel on the forehead. "So, what will it be Hummel?"
"Fine, where is Blaine?" Thad couldn't help but laugh when Kurt asked his question. "I didn't say anything funny Harwood."
"Did you really think Rachel would tell you where you could find Blaine of all people? Seriously Hummel, you're losing your grasp on reality because that's the last thing she'd ever tell you." Thad told him. "Wherever he is, is none of your business."
"After what he just did, I have every right to talk to him!"
"And what did Blaine supposedly do?"
"You know exactly what he did!"
"I can honestly tell you, I have no clue what you're talking about. Hold on a second and let me ask everyone else if they know." Thad then move the phone from his ear to ask everyone if they knew what Blaine had supposedly done to Kurt. Once everyone shook their head, he put the phone back to his ear. "Sorry Hummel, but no one here knows what Blaine supposedly did. And considering how many people I'm with and how close they are to Blaine, it says a lot."
"Right! Like I'm going to believe that you along with those people Blaine associates with don't know?"
"Don't know what?"
"His lawyers served me with a fucking restraining order! Thad's eyes bugged out while Kurt spoke and his attention went directly towards Wes who looked at him. "Don't tell me you didn't know!"
"If I told you I did know, I'd be lying. I had no clue!" Thad replied. "Are you really that surprised after all the drama you've brought up around him? Truly, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. Considering what you just told me though, you need to stay away from him unless you want to suffer the consequences." Thad only heard a huff before the line went dead causing him to toss the phone onto the blanket. "I don't think you're going to have to worry about hearing from him again."
"What's going on Thad?" Rachel asked as she looked at him, as he had quite the grin on his face.
"Let me talk with Hunter first, alright?" Thad then kissed her once more before getting up off the blanket. "Wes, you should probably come as well."
Once the two of them walked out of ear-shot of the others, the conversation began. "Could you hear anything Rachel?" Santana asked as she looked at her before glancing over to where the guys were talking.
"Not a thing, but it's got to be something for him to have that look on his face." Rachel then looked over at Jeff and Morgan. "Do you two know anything?"
"We're as in the dark as you are about what is going on." Jeff told her. "But if he was that adamant to speak to you as Thad said, something big is going on. Just as I don't think it's a coincidence that whatever has happened, it occurred once Blaine and Sebastian left town."
"I'd have to agree with Jeff." Nick stated. "When did the calls start Rachel?"
"Yesterday."
"Certainly puts credence behind Jeff's theory."
While the others were talking, Thad had called Hunter in hopes that he'd answer even though he was away. "So, you had no idea this was happening?" Wes asked as he looked at Thad who had his phone on speaker since he told them at once what Kurt had said.
"Not a clue." Hunter replied. "I know Mr. Smythe was working on something, but I didn't know what. But if he was able to get a restraining order filed, this goes beyond what we all know as they aren't easy to get. Since he just got it, it's probably temporary."
"What grounds could he have gotten it on?" Thad asked.
"I wish I had answers for you, but I don't. It's as I said, this goes beyond what we all know so speculating isn't going to do anything but stress us out." Hunter told them. "What you said makes sense though, if he was served with this, the last thing he should be doing is searching for Blaine. I don't think it's a coincidence that this is happening with Blaine out of town."
"The same thought came to my mind as well." Wes stated. "Considering how stressed Blaine's been when it comes to dealing with all this, it makes sense for him not to be around."
"Should I tell everyone?" Thad asked aloud. "I mean, it's going to get them speculating much as we are. Yet, I don't know if Tina knows what happened to Blaine or how much Quinn knows. Not to mention, Jordan's a reporter."
"You'll need to say something after the way you reacted." Wes replied.
"Wes is right, but you might want to see if Rachel will take Quinn and Tina on a walk though." Hunter told him. "I know I didn't mention Jordan as she knows the difference between professional and personal. Plus, do you think she'd really out Blaine's personal life knowing how protective Santana is over him?"
"Good point!" Thad said remembering all too well how Santana reacted when Blaine told the girls what happened. "Do you have any idea why Blaine hadn't mentioned this to us?"
"Probably because of everything involved, not to mention, lawyer/client confidentiality. Knowing Blaine, the last thing he wants is to drag the rest of us into this anymore than he has."
"Hunter's right, I know for a fact Blaine would prefer that none of us knew what he went through while he and Kurt were married." Wes stated. "This has turned into a nightmare for him that he can't seem to wake up from. Even with as great as all the other aspects of his life are, this hangs over him like a dark cloud waiting to burst." That was a comparison the guys really couldn't argue with as it was true. It didn't matter how well things were going for Blaine, his past marriage and life was hanging over him to some extent.
While they were all talking, Kurt was pacing his apartment as he looked at the summons sitting on his coffee table. He'd gotten it before he went to work on Friday and read it more times than he could count. Throughout his day on Friday he was furious that Blaine had pulled this sort of stunt. There was no way he was harassing Blaine as the papers stated, though some of the language in that section had him confused. After being ignored by Rachel, he finally called his Dad to ask what he should do, but ended up talking with Carole instead. Ever since the two had spoken the day after Blaine's show, Burt always seemed to be busy when he called. Carole told him not to take it personally, but it was hard for him not to.
Things had definitely changed between the two of them; Kurt just wasn't sure to what extent. The only things he was sure of, Burt was deeply disappointed by what he'd found out. And he felt like Kurt had made a fool out of him because he blinded stood up for him not only to the Andersons, but Blaine as well. Kurt had to admit it stung when Burt told him he felt horrible for how he treated Blaine that night, assuming he'd been lying. He also told Kurt, that he was thankful he was at an event when he and Patrick spoke because if roles had been reversed he wasn't sure he would've been able to keep it together.
Even knowing his Dad was upset with him, Kurt didn't know who else he could turn to in that moment so he sat down to call him. When he heard his Dad's voice when he answered, Kurt was certainly surprised. "You're home?"
"I am, you seem surprised." Burt replied. "Are you trying to reach Carole as I can go get her for you?"
"Yes, I'm a bit surprised considering you haven't been home lately when I've called." Kurt told him. "You don't have to get her Dad; I called to talk with you."
"About?"
"Blaine." The name had barely left Kurt's mouth and he heard his Dad sigh. "I know it's not something you want to talk about, but…I need your help Dad."
"What could you possibly need my help for in regards to Blaine considering I asked you to stay away from him?"
"Yesterday morning I was served with a restraining order telling me I have to stay away from him." Burt sighed once again with what he was told. "I hadn't seen him since his show that night Dad, honest."
"That means this must've been in the works for quite some time." Burt told him. "What else don't I know Kurt?" The tone of Burt's voice when he spoke clearly showed his frustration though concern was evident as well. "Kurt, more has clearly happened than I know about. The only way I'll be able to help you is if you're completely honest with me."
"I have been."
"No, you haven't! If you had been I wouldn't have made a fool out of myself." Burt stated to him. "Do you know how hard it was for me to come home and tell Carole that everything Patrick said was true? Or to then tell her it was even worse after I got Blaine's side of things?
"Blaine exaggerated things!"
"Exaggeration or not, you abused him Kurt in more than one way, the extent really doesn't matter to me. The fact that it happened is enough!" Burt then took a deep breath as Carole came around the corner as she'd heard him from down the hall. More than once when he'd returned, Carole had to remind him to calm down. "That's not even getting into the fact that you had an affair which you told me yourself, you don't regret having. So forgive me for not necessarily believing that you've told me everything because people can't just get a restraining order!" Those last words caused Carole to sit down next to him wide-eyed.
"So, you're not going to help me?"
"I never said that Kurt. I said I can't help unless you're honest with me about what's happened." Burt replied a bit calmer as Carole had taken his hand. "Even then, you're probably going to have to hire a lawyer."
"I can't afford a lawyer Dad. I'm still paying off my divorce lawyer."
"Well, if you hadn't fought Blaine on the divorce, the fees wouldn't have been so high." When Kurt grunted in frustration Burt sighed softly. "I'm sorry son, but you brought that on yourself. You weren't happy in the marriage, yet you fought Blaine on the divorce anyhow. Another thing I don't understand, especially with everything I've learned."
"What am I supposed to do Dad?"
"Your best bet is to call legal aide to find lawyers that handle your situation that do Pro Bono work. Just know, you're going to have to tell them the truth Kurt. I have no doubt that Blaine's lawyers know everything that's happened between the two of you. And if you think of changing some of the facts, remember others have witnessed your behavior towards him outside of his friends."
"Are you referring to Sebastian's parents?"
"Yes, but I also know Blaine's manager was around on New Year's Eve which is why security was brought on to keep an eye on him."
"Excuse me?"
"Kurt, Blaine was pretty straight forward with me that night. While I didn't believe him in that moment, everything he told me has been collaborated in one way or another. Heck, you confirmed things he said. The biggest issue was the extent of things that happened. It certainly puts Sebastian's behavior into perspective."
"Great! You're standing up for him as well!" Kurt huffed out in frustration as he was having a hard time hearing his Dad point out his mistakes.
"I'm not standing up for him; I said it put his behavior into perspective. There is a difference Kurt." Burt told him. "Just as Patrick's behavior makes sense now as I would've been as irate as he was."
"I know, we talked about that Dad."
"And we will probably talk about it again." Burt then took a deep breath before glancing over at Carole who hadn't left his side. "I wish there was more I could do to help you Kurt, but there really isn't. So, I'll repeat some advice I've already given you, stay the hell away from Blaine Anderson. While Blaine and his parents have the money to pay for top lawyers, he's also now got a record label watching his back."
"While I wanted to talk to him to find out what was going on, you're right Dad, I need to stay away from him."
"That means no going to his performances Kurt."
"That won't be a problem as I there is nothing listed for him this week. It seems he's gone off grid, and no one that is close to him will tell me where he is."
"Considering he graduated from NYADA, he could be on vacation."
"He graduated?"
"Yes, I found that out when I went to go speak with the Andersons earlier in the week."
"You did what?" Kurt exclaimed loudly enough that Burt had to move the phone from his ear. "Why would you possibly go see them?"
"To apologize for how I behaved. Needless to say, Katherine wasn't very receptive, not that I blame her."
"And his Dad?"
"Patrick wasn't home when I stopped by their house. But I'd have to presume from her reaction, his wouldn't have been much different."
"Are you going to try and talk to him?"
"No, as I said what I needed to, to Katherine and she said she'd tell him."
"I'm sorry Dad." Kurt told him as he could hear the disappointment in his voice. When everything was happening between him and Blaine, he never realized it could impact his family the way it has. He'd managed to disappoint his Dad in a way he thought was impossible to do.
"So am I Kurt, as I really wish I knew what clicked inside your head that you thought what you were doing was okay. You do realize your actions brought this all onto you."
"But I don't know what I supposedly did to him to cause this Dad. It's why I wanted to talk to him."
"Clearly that's not going to happen Kurt. While it might not seem like it, Carole and I will support you through this, but you can't do anything foolish to make things worse." When Kurt sighed, it didn't surprise Burt considering what he said to him. "Kurt, I'm not saying you are foolish, just you don't make the wisest decisions when it comes to Blaine."
"Evidently." Kurt mumbled under his breath, yet Burt heard him.
"Kurt, you don't. And with the people Blaine has surrounding him, it's obvious with what you just received they're going to do whatever it takes to keep you from him." Kurt sighed once again. "It also doesn't help that Sebastian's Dad is one hell of a lawyer as well."
"He is?"
"He is so after you deal with this situation; I recommend you forget all about Blaine." When Kurt went silent, Burt spoke up again. "Kurt, I'm serious."
"I know you are." Not much more was said, though Burt reminded Kurt they would be there for him. After the call ended, Kurt didn't know what more he expected considering the timing of everything. The thought of having to call around for legal aide didn't thrill him as he could only presume Blaine had the best lawyers he could find working for him. And having his Dad point out that Sebastian's Dad was a great lawyer didn't help his mood in the slightest. He also hadn't taken into consideration that this could've been brought forth by Blaine's record label and not Blaine personally.
The call had probably ended twenty minutes prior, yet Burt and Carole still sat on the couch with one another. Each of them in disbelief at the reason behind Kurt's call to them that day. "Where did I go wrong Carole?" Burt said solemnly as he leaned back against the couch. "I know I didn't raise him to treat people in this manner."
"Things happen that our out of our control Burt, you know that." Carole told him. "The only thing you can do now is help him through the situation he's gotten himself into."
"He had a restraining order filed against him Carole, a freaking restraining order!"
"Does he know why it was filed?"
"He said he has no idea." Burt told her. "While I want to believe him, after everything I've been told…it's hard to do so. He's gotten himself into one heck of a situation Carole."
"He certainly has." Carole said to him. "That's why we're going to have to support him. Hopefully he takes your words to heart and stays away from Blaine."
"If he doesn't, he's going to find himself in jail." Hearing him getting frustrated again, Carole began to rub his back. "In some ways, I don't think he gets how serious this is as he tried to find Blaine to talk to him." Carole tilted her head as she looked at him. "My thoughts exactly."
"Is there anyone you know he might listen to besides you, maybe Rachel?"
"Rachel made it crystal clear she wants nothing to do with him that night. The look in her eyes when she spoke about what she witnessed on New Year's Eve was nothing but disgust. I can only imagine how Sam felt about the whole situation."
"Have you tried to speak to him?"
"No. After everything I've been told, I have a feeling I'm the last person outside of Kurt he'd want to see considering how close he and Blaine are." Burt then leaned back on the couch causing Carole to move her hand before he ran his hands over his head. "Did I tell you I read that Blaine is going to be playing Columbus at the end of the summer?" Carole shook her head in response. "He's performing during the festival over Labor Day weekend."
"They must have quite a bit of faith in him as that's a big event."
"From what I heard that night, they've got every reason to as Blaine sounded incredible." Burt told her. "Once he was done with his encore, the crowd still wanted more. I wouldn't be surprised if Blaine's got quite the career ahead of him."
Seeing a change in his expression, Carole took ahold of his hand. "What's on your mind?"
"How could I have been so quick to dismiss what Blaine told me?"
"You didn't believe Kurt was capable of doing what he was accused of." Carole told him. "Plus, Kurt had told you things while they were divorcing that didn't paint the best picture of Blaine."
"I know. I can't help but feel I missed something during all of our conversations."
"Don't beat yourself up over this anymore than you have Burt, please. This is certainly one of those times in life where we can't take on someone else's problem." Burt turned to look at her. "I'm not saying this to be cruel as you know I love Kurt, but he needs to accept responsibility for his behavior towards Blaine. It's gone beyond the point where you can protect him. You gave him sound advice; we can only hope he listens."
With all of this happening, the atmosphere in Puerto Rico was completely different as Blaine and Sebastian had just returned from doing some sight-seeing. While they both wanted to let their friends know what was going to be happening, Xavier told them they should wait till they return and then only talk about it should they be asked. "Do you still want to go for a swim Bas?" Blaine asked once Sebastian took a seat in front of his laptop.
"Of course I do, why wouldn't I?" After he spoke, Sebastian noticed the way Blaine was looking at him. "I want to download all the pictures I took, before I get distracted." Sebastian told him while reaching out his hand towards him. "Because you Killer, are quite the distraction."
"I don't know what you're talking about." Blaine replied innocently enough, though the look on his face was anything but. "It sounds as though you have an issue with self-control if that's the case."
"Really?"
"Yes." Blaine replied before walking up behind him and draping his arms over Sebastian's shoulders. "Personally, it's not a bad thing as I'm quite fond of you losing control." He then skimmed his nose over the curve of Sebastian's ear. "Just as I love being a distraction to you."
"I thought you didn't know what I was talking about." While he spoke, Sebastian placed a hand over Blaine's which were clasped on his chest, before leaning his head back to look at him.
"Like I said, I love being a distraction but it wouldn't have been very modest of me to admit that upfront." Blaine then placed a kiss to Sebastian's forehead. "Do you think you got some good shots today?"
"I'm certain I did. Not only was the scenery breathtaking, the company was as well." The next thing Sebastian felt, was Blaine resting his head on his shoulder. "Have you enjoyed yourself today so far?"
"Immensely. Are you going to sit here while they download or are you free to join me for a swim?"
"I'll be out in a few minutes, as I want to make sure it goes smoothly as that's when glitches tend to happen."
"Fair enough." Blaine replied before kissing Sebastian on the cheek. "I'll be waiting." Sebastian gave him a kiss before Blaine headed towards the French doors leading out back. Upon noticing Sebastian was watching him, Blaine stripped out of his clothes there in the great room before making his way out to the pool.
If he had looked back, Blaine would've seen that Sebastian hadn't taken his eyes off of him the entire time. After taking a cleansing breath to calm his libido a bit, Sebastian opened up the folder and started to look at some of the pictures he'd taken. While he loved the scenery shots he was seeing, his couldn't stop from smiling once some of the pictures of Blaine appeared. Even though he'd posed for quite a few, it was the candid shots that captured more of Blaine's personality, those moments where he was simply enjoying the moment.
Tempting as it was to look through them more, that feeling dissipated once he turned his head and saw Blaine floating on one of the rafts in the pool. If anyone of their friends saw him in this moment, they wouldn't believe what they were seeing. Yet, it wasn't something Sebastian was going to share with them as he loved the fact that there were parts of Blaine's personality reserved solely for him. So after getting up from his seat, it didn't take Sebastian long to get out of his clothes and go and join Blaine in the pool. And if the previous day was any clue, Sebastian could only imagine what Blaine might have in mind for them.
