A/N: Here's the next chapter! Enjoy!
Agent May found Coulson in his office, head in his hands.
"She's going to be alright, you know." May said, leaning on the desk, looking at him with sad eyes.
"I broke my promise. I promised that I wouldn't let her get hurt." Coulson said, looking up at May.
"You tried your best, she's not a child and she knew what she was doing. You couldn't have known that Barnes was going to be there."
"I know, but_" Coulson started, but May cut him off.
"Coulson, don't do that to yourself. Maria should've listened when you told her not to engage Barnes and she didn't. I also don't know Captain Rogers as well as you do, but he's going to be more worried about Maria, not mad at you." She said, about to continue when a knock on the door stopped her.
"Enter." Coulson said, taking his head out of his hands as the door opened to reveal Jemma.
"I just thought that I should inform you that Agent Hill is resting comfortably and she may be unconscious for awhile, only time will tell. She should make a full recovery."
Agent May spoke for Coulson, "Thank you, Simmons. I want all of you to watch her and inform us when Maria wakes."
Simmons nodded and silently left the room and went to the lab to work on Emily's injuries to find that she was now wide awake with a brace on her right wrist, courtesy of Fitz, and lying on her stomach on the cold examination table.
"You woke up sooner than expected." She said, lifting up the girls shirt, cringing at her bloody back and the laceration that were accompanied by dark blue-ish-purple bruises.
"Sedatives don't really work on me that well." She explained, tensing up when the biochemist poured some anti-septic on the lacerations to wash away the blood in the surrounding areas and cleaning the wounds.
Emily's head snapped up hearing a scream.
"Fitz and Skye must've put Agent Hill's arm back into place," Jemma said, noticing the look of alarm on the younger girls face as she added, "She'll be fine, don't you worry."
Emily nodded as Simmons took a syringe and injected some morphine into the cuts to numb them before she got to work with the stitches.
"Are you and your sister close?" She asked, trying to make conversation.
Emily nodded again, "Very close. I'm closer to her than I am with our brother. Maria was more like a mother to me than a sister. I vaguely remember calling Maria "mom" until I was five or six, then Diana found out and flipped shit so I had to start calling Maria by her name. I can't even count the times that she took a beating whenever I got into trouble just as Danny had tried to do for her. I won't be able to repay her for that."
Jemma gave a weak smile, "I think you already have. What you did today may have saved her life. Had you not done what you did to help her, she'd be in worse shape and we'd most likely have to use the same drug that saved Skye and Coulson. The bullets did come close to puncturing her femoral artery, however." She said as she finished up stitching Emily's back and the others, minus May and Coulson, entered as Jemma helped Emily sit up.
"My dad wants you to call Steve." Skye said, handing a phone to her.
"Why do I have to do it? Why can't one of you or Coulson do it?" She asked, giving the phone back to the hacker, who sighed.
"Dad can't really talk to him at this moment in time, and you know Steve better than we do." She explained, handing the phone back to her, only for Emily to refuse to take it.
"Yeah, but he's going to be mad! You handle anger better because of Grant." She said, earning a glare from Ward.
"Will one of you just do it!?" He snapped, making Emily flinch as Grant took the phone from Skye and held it out to Emily as he added, "He's going to be very distraught, no doubt, but he won't be angry." He said, his voice low as she took the phone.
Taking a deep breath, she dialed a number and held it up to her ear.
"Hello?" A tired voice answered, obviously it was still early in New York.
"Steve, it's Emily."
Skye and Grant walked out of the lab and back to the room where Maria slept peacefully, standing at her bedside.
"This is my fault." Skye said, resting a hand on her growing bump and sat down in a chair beside the other agent.
"Skye, honey, why would you think it was your fault?" Grant asked, kneeling down beside her as she began to cry.
"If I had never joined SHIELD, no one would be getting hurt because of me! I should've just stayed in my van and none of this would have happened." She cried, sobs wracking her entire body, Grant hugging her in attempt to soothe her.
"This probably would have happened anyway, 're not the only one who thinks it's your fault. Coulson does, Emily does, May and myself do."
Skye looked up at him, "But it's none of your faults. Maria could be dying because of me."
"Simmons said she was going to make a full recovery."
Skye sighed, "No one_" She started, only for Grant to cut her off.
"No one is to blame but HYDRA."
Skye nodded, "I guess you're right."
"I want to hear you say it, Skye." He said, looking at her expectantly.
"Say what?"
"What I just said."
The hacker gave a small smile and rolled her eyes.
"Ugh. Fine! No one is to blame but HYDRA."
Grant smiled and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Goo. Just keep saying that and you won't blame yourself. Now, you should get some sleep, you look exhausted."
"But_" She started, but he cut her off again.
"No 'buts', i'll stay with her and wake you if something happens."
"Promise?"
Grant nodded, "I promise."
Skye held up her pinky, "Pinky promise?"
Grant sighed and wrapped his pinky around hers, "Pinky promise."
Skye smiled and nodded, walking briskly out of the room as Grant took the seat that she had been sitting in.
The things I do for her...
