#60 Just Anybody
He didn't catch on right away; he didn't see the stares, the smiles, the flirting. It wasn't until he saw them eating lunch at school together that he noticed something. When he saw the two he couldn't help but feel his blood boiling, why was he flirting with Casey, his Casey? Sam had yet to say anything, so Derek didn't say anything,
One day they were hanging in out in Derek's room when Sam suddenly asked, "Hey so, I was wondering if you think I could ask Casey out on a date?" His head snapped up from his computer and darted toward Sam. "What?" He asked slowly. "I want to ask Casey out. You don't care right, I mean you're only step-siblings so it's not like she's your sister." He said quickly. "Why would you want to date her?" Derek asked quickly. "Uhh because she's hot and she seems cool." He said, as if it were obvious. Derek was getting irritated, Sam could not date Casey, she couldn't date anyone. "Hey bro I know you don't think we're related or that I even care about her but you need to not talk about her as 'hot'." Derek said, standing over Sam with his arms crossed, "And no you can't ask Casey out." He said firmly.
Sam now stood up, "I can't? Really D?" He asked angrily, "Because I'm pretty sure I can do whatever I want. I was just asking to be courteous. In fact, I think I'm going to ask her right now." He continued, moving around Derek. He stopped Sam, grabbing his shoulders, "No." Derek said firmly. "Yes." Sam replied, pushing Derek off him. "No." Derek repeated, pushing Sam.
Sam pushed back, and suddenly there was a pattern. The pushing started to get rougher and rougher, and finally Derek swung at him, Sam ducking just in time. The two fell on the floor and the punches started to fly. "I said no!" Derek yelled, and Sam replied, "Well I don't care! What's the problem?" He asked, and Derek couldn't answer so he just pushed Sam. Suddenly Casey and George came running in. "What is going on in here?" Casey demanded, George right behind her. Both boys stood up and dusted themselves off. "Nothing." Both boys said in sync. "Well look at both of you guys, you're a mess. Now get your butts downstairs." George demanded, making sure both boys went downstairs. Casey hung back and went back to her room.
George made both boys go sit at the dining table, right across from each other. Casey at this point quietly tiptoed to the top of the steps to hear what was going on. "Now you two are best friends, what's going on?" George asked. Neither guy spoke for a moment until Sam finally did, "All I wanted to do was ask Casey out and Derek practically jumped me." Casey ears suddenly tuned in louder. "Derek, is this true?" George asked. "Well I didn't jump Sam, but yes he asked, I said no, and he wouldn't take that as an answer." Derek replied. Casey couldn't believe what she was hearing, first Sam actually did like her, then he wanted to ask her out, and third Derek fought Sam, his best friend, over her. "Derek, I think you should let Casey make her own decisions, and if she wants to date Sam then she will. Sam you should respect your friend's wishes or be reasonable. Okay?" George asked, eyeing the both of them. "Okay." Both boys mumbled. George left to give them a moment. "Look I should probably get going on home. But we're cool man, I'll see you around." He said reaching out his hand. "See you man," Derek extended his hand back absently.
Derek trudged up the stairs and headed back into his room, and was startled to see Casey sitting on his bed waiting. "What was that about?" Casey asked, and Derek jumped, "Jeez Case." Derek said quietly. "Don't avoid my question." Casey said sternly. "Now what the hell was that about?" She asked again. "Case please." Derek begged, yes begged, and ran his fingers through his hair. "Der, c'mon talk to me." She pleaded. "Sam wanted to ask you out." Derek said frustratedly. Casey just looked at him blankly, "What about it?" She asked confusedly. Derek started pacing, "You can't go out with him!" He yelled. "But he's your best friend shouldn't he be too good for me, not the other way around, what do you want me to date a random guy from school?" She asked him.
"No. I don't want you to date anyone. Anyone except for me." Derek said quietly, looking down at his feet. "What?" She asked, completely caught by surprise. "You heard me. Casey I don't want Sam or any other guy dating you." He repeated. "Derek.." She started, soon interrupted by Derek, "Don't. Don't say anything. I can wait." He said seriously. Casey just left, she had a lot of information to absorb.
