Chapter 5 – Detentions and Power

It had been two weeks since the first lessons had started for Edward and his friends. They were currently getting top marks in everything. They were currently sitting in the library, doing their latest transfiguration assignment from professor McGonagall, when Draco looked up. He groaned. "Look out guys, Potter and Weasel have come in." he said. Sure enough, in the doorway were the two, and they seemed to be looking for something, or someone.

"What are they even doing in here?" Daphne asked, putting down her quill.

"I don't know, but they are coming towards us." Draco said, as he saw the two moving over towards them. They stopped in the worst possible place for the two students to be. They had stopped right behind Edward. Weasley coughed. Edward still didn't budge from doing his work.

"What do you want; can't you see we are trying to work?" Daphne said.

"We are here for Thorn." Weasley said before Potter could open his mouth.

"What for?" Edward asked, still writing. "I am in Slytherin, and you two are in Gryffindor. We have no business with one another, unless it is me besting you in an intellectual capacity." Weasley was fuming, and looked like he was about to scream something, but Potter talked first.

"Headmaster Dumbledore sent us. He wants to talk to you." Edward sighed, but kept writing.

"Tell him I will see him when I decide to see him."

"You will see him now." Weasley said, cutting off Potter before he could even speak.

"I have nothing more to say to you, bugger off." Edward said, and Pansy, being opposite him, saw the look on his face. He was getting angry.

"Calm down Ed, you are getting angry." She whispered to him. He nodded, but that was immediately followed by a voice from behind him.

"Do you think you are better than me, just because you lick the mini Death Eater's boots?" As he said this, Edward slammed down his pen, making all of them jumped. He stood, turned round, and punched him in the nose. Weasley fell down in pain, moaning. Edward knelt down.

"I'm not going to tell you again. Annoy me again, and I will tell my raven to eat out your eyes. Are we clear?" He whispered menacingly in Weasley's ear. At that moment, Madam Pince came over with a book to put on the shelf. She saw Edward kneeling down next to Weasley in pain.

"Mr Thorn with me. Mr Potter, take Mr Weasley to the hospital wing." She said. Edward turned towards the table to get his things. He picked them up, and his friends could tell he hadn't calmed down from it, and they felt a shiver of danger run across them. He packed his things away, and walked off with Madam Pince, the two Gryffindors long gone.

Edward had soon found out where they were going. They had gone to the Headmaster's office. He was currently sitting in a chair directly opposite the Headmaster. McGonagall and Snape were there too, along with Madam Pince. In the corner of his eye, he could just see Weasley and Potter. Potter was looking down at his shoes, whilst Weasley was smirking at him. "Edward my boy, I am happy that you have come here." Dumbledore said, his eyes twinkling.

"Of course Headmaster." Edward said, though inside he was seething. Wasn't as if he had much of a choice.

"Now then, Mr Weasley says that you punched him in the library, is this correct?" Dumbledore said, and Weasley's smirk grew.

"Prick deserved it." Edward mumbled.

"I'm sorry my boy, what did you say?" Dumbledore said, and Edward knew that he had heard, though the others didn't. There was no point denying it. He had been caught red-handed anyway.

"Yes sir." Edward said, looking at the floor.

"Very well, fifty points from Slytherin and a detention with Professor McGonagall." Dumbledore said, and Edward looked up wide-eyed. That was such a small punishment for doing what he had. But there was more. "We are also ready for your resorting." At this, Edward's eyes darkened, and his expression grew hard.

"What?" He asked menacingly.

"Your resorting." Dumbledore said.

"No, there will be no resorting." Edward said, and even through occlumency shields, Dumbledore felt a shiver of fear. In the corner, Weasley's smirk had disappeared as well.

"But Mr Thorn ..."

"No, I refuse to be resorted, especially when you have no reason to resort me. I will be at your classroom tonight Professor." Edward said and he stormed out.

It was only halfway during their last lesson of the day, Charms, when the rest of the group saw Edward again. They could see that he was angry, but seemingly calm enough to take anything on. "5 points from Slytherin for being late Mr Thorn." Flitwick said. Edward nodded, and took out his things.

"What happened up there Ed?" Draco asked.

"I'm not going to talk about it."
"But ..."
"No Draco, no buts." Edward interrupted, and Draco fell silent.

"Calm down Edward." Daphne said quietly, putting her hand on his shoulder. Edward went rigid for a split second, then visibly relaxed.

"How do you do that?" Draco asked her.

"No idea." Daphne said a confused look on her face.

"What did I miss?" Edward asked, and his question was met with silence.

Later, Edward was leaving the Great Hall for his detention. He had a bad feeling about the detention. He hadn't been feeling himself ever since he had started to eat. He shrugged it off as a slight illness, and walked into McGonagall's classroom. He looked around for her, but couldn't see her anywhere. Shrugging, he sat down at a desk, before spotting a note on the door. He got up to look at it.

Gone for teacher meeting. Dust and clean room without magic. McGonagall

Edward looked at the note with disgust, before throwing it on the floor. Why was he being punished? Okay, he knew that but it was the git's fault in the first place. And cleaning the place without magic? He had gotten so used to magic in the past couple of weeks that he didn't feel that he could live without it. He could feel himself getting angrier, and at none other than Dumbledore. Why did the man want to resort him. He was having no trouble with Slytherin yet, and as far as knew, no one in Slytherin openly despised him. There were those who still thought he was a muggleborn, but that would change with time, when he revealed his ring. It didn't make any sense. As he was thinking this, he became angrier and angrier, until a desk went up in flame. He was now totally lost in his anger. Fire burst out from him in all direction, burning everything in the room. When the fire died out a minute later, he was unconscious on the floor.

As Edward arrived at the classroom, a teacher meeting was happening in the Headmaster's office, consisting of the four head of houses. "Another year has begun my friends, and it is a pleasure to see you all. I need your reports on the ability of the first years. Severus, if you will begin." Dumbledore said, and Snape nodded.

"The first years are mediocre at best in my class, as they always are. However, Mr Malfoy seems to taking well to the subject, as does Ms Greengrass." McGonagall spoke next.

"The first years seem to be adjusting well to my class, but the best student by far is young Mr Thorn. He seems to be suited to the magic we perform." She said, and Snape smirked. Having a prodigy in his rival's class made him happy.

"Yes, Mr Thorn does seem to be doing admirably academically, but he still needs to be resorted." Dumbledore said.

"I do not see why Headmaster. The only danger is from blood purists, and he is protected by his friendship with Mr Malfoy. He is, as you know, also strongly opposed to the idea himself. It would be best if we wait for a reason to show itself to him." Snape said, making a case for his student. He didn't want to lose an academic brilliance from his house, it would be unacceptable.

"It seems that you are probably right again Severus. It seems..." Dumbledore stopped.

"What is it Albus?" McGonagall asked, and Dumbledore stood.

"There has been a large magical discharge in the castle. Specifically, your classroom Minerva." Dumbledore said, striding out. The four heads followed quickly behind him.

As they approached the classroom, Dumbledore went to open the door. As he touched the handle, he removed it immediately. It was scorching hot. He drew his wand. "I'm sorry about your door Minerva." he said, before casting a bombarda at it, smashing it to pieces. As the teachers walked inside, Minerva and Flitwick gasped. The entire room was almost destroyed. The tables were in two different states. Some were smashed, splinters lining the floor, while others were simply ash. Her own desk had suffered the second, a large pile of ash resting where it used to be. A caw drew their attention to the roof, where a raven was roosting. As they looked around again, they saw who they were looking for. Edward was lying there, completely unharmed, but unconscious on the floor. "Severus, take Mr Thorn to the hospital wing. Filius, help Minerva with her room. Ponoma, come with me. We will collect his friends."

"Are you sure I shouldn't come with you headmaster?" Snape asked.

"No Severus. I have a feeling his familiar has no reason to trust us. Who are we looking for Severus?"

"Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson, Blaise Zabini, and Daphne Greengrass."

"Very well, come Ponoma." Dumbledore said, and walked out, Sprout just behind him. As Flitwick and McGonagall tried to fix the room, Snape went towards Edward. He crouched down and picked him up. The raven soared down, and landed on Snape's shoulder, lightly tapping Edward's head. Sighing with relief, he took him to the hospital wing.

Down in the Slytherin common room, the group were playing chess. Pansy was playing Blaise, whilst Draco had just lost to Daphne. "Can't believe I lost." he grumbled.

"You lost because I am better." Daphne said, looking down on him. The group laughed. Suddenly the Common room door started to slide open.

"Edward can't be done with his detention yet." Pansy said, and looked shocked when Dumbledore and Professor Sprout came through.

"Mr Malfoy, Mr Zabini, Ms Greengrass, and Ms Parkinson are to come with me." Dumbledore said. The group looked at each other, before standing and walking over to him. He looked at them, and then walked out. They followed. Behind them, Bulstrode was listening to Nott. She had not hung out with her previous friends since the first potions lesson. In her view, the mudblood had to go.

Outside the common room, the four Slytherins were looking at Dumbledore as he explained the situation. They were shocked to hear that the transfiguration classroom had been destroyed. As they reached the hospital wing, Ponoma left to go and prepare herbology lessons. They entered. The group gasped as the saw Edward, sitting up and seemingly fine. Who he was talking to shocked them even more, it was Hermione Granger, the girl they had insulted on the train. They walked towards them. "It must be amazing, being the son of an ambassador." She said, gesturing wildly.

"It is for the most part, but father has to leave suddenly a lot of the time." Edward said, stroking Lilith as he talked. He spotted his friends. "Hi guys."

"You seem alright for someone who has just passed out." Pansy said.

"How is he Madam Pomfrey?" Daphne asked.

"Just fine. He has had a minor magical maturity. Rare, but not unheard of. He can stay here tonight, and will be ready for class in the morning."

"See, I'm special." Edward said, lifting his nose in the air, and Hermione laughed.

"Well, I will see you tomorrow." Dumbledore said, leaving the hospital wing.

"You have five minutes, and then I am kicking all but Ms Granger and Mr Thorn out." Pomfrey said, leaving them alone. As soon as he was out, the other Slytherins turned to Edward.

"Why are you talking to her?" Draco almost shouted. Edward was not shocked.

"I think we made a mistake rejecting her on blood status Draco."

"How so?"

"Look at her test scores. She is only behind the four of us in all lessons. She must be worth something."

"Not polite to talk about me when I'm right in front of you." Hermione grumbled.

"Plus she makes very good conversation."

"So, she is still a mudblood."

"So was I before we went to Gringotts, or did you forget?" Edward said menacingly, rising from his bed. He walked in front of Draco, and looked right into his eyes. "Do you think I am stupid Draco?"

"N n n no Edward." Draco said stammering, backing away from him. The others looked on in shock as Draco was backed into the wall.

"Then do not question me. You will accept Ms Granger, and we will take her to Gringotts at Christmas." He said.

"Every body out now." Pomphrey said, coming in to the wing. Edward had quickly moved away from Draco and was now back in his bed. The group left and as they closed the door, they heard Edward and Hermione laughing.
