"Move in with me." Said Magnus.
My boyfriend stood in the doorway to my room at five in the morning looking about as bedraggled as I felt. Given that it was Magnus, it must have been killing him to be seen that way in public. However, today he seemed to have something else on his mind for once.
Moments ago Magnus had been banging insistently on my door. At first I had thought it was Simon or Kyle with some kind of emergency. I'd shouted to just come in but when nobody entered I was forced to get up and answer in person. When I did, I found Magnus with this crazy look in his eyes like he'd had some big idea. This, I now realised, was because he had indeed had an idea.
"Stay with me all the time." Magnus added to his plea.
"You're kidding." I shook my head in disbelief.
Magnus had officially lost his mind. Who comes driving out at such an ungodly hour to ask - no, tell - you to move in with them? My boyfriend. That's who.
"Remember that talk we had about moving too quickly?" I pointed out. What I really meant was 'Remember how we wanted to kill each other the other day?' But bringing that up would keep me from forgetting about it. Which was the opposite of what I wanted.
Only a day ago I had thought Magnus and I were coming to an end. Now I knew we weren't, but I would have thought that my boyfriend would want to take a step back and assess our situation for a while. Magnus - being Magnus - did not trend towards the expected path.
"How did you even get in here?" I wondered out loud. I looked up and down the short hall but I didn't see either of my fellow residents.
"I banged on your front door until Simon let me in." Magnus actually sounded pretty proud of himself. Was that some kind of accomplishment in pure relentlessness?
"Uh-huh..." I nodded, but only to be indulgent. Magnus clearly had no concept at all of what 'slow down' meant. I was incredibly tired.
I turned around and went to sit on the bed. Magnus followed me in and turned on the lights. My eyes felt like they had been assaulted so I squeezed them shut and groaned. I heard Magnus laugh softly.
"I missed you last night." He said. "I want you to be there every time I go to sleep."
"Every couple wants that, Magnus. But you can't just rush out and do that right away." I sighed.
"Why not?" Magnus asked.
Of course he wouldn't see the issue. Doing things right away had pretty much been Magnus' thing for his entire adult life. His experiences of relationships had never involved going home to an empty apartment at the end of the day up until recently. I could only gather that he wasn't adjusting to it too well.
"You just... Don't." I said pathetically.
I wasn't a sociology student or anything, I don't know why people do things the way they do. Or why we have these unwritten rules about what constitutes appropriate. I just tried to follow them anyway, whereas Magnus didn't believe in following rules if he couldn't find the reasons they were in place.
"Your argument is not at all compelling Darling," Magnus was blatantly not convinced. He did love pushing social boundaries.
I sighed to myself. It was far too early in the morning to make decisions like this. Sleep deprivation and was going to cloud my judgement. Sleep deprivation was probably what had prompted Magnus to make this offer all of a sudden.
"You need to think about this." I told him.
"I did think about it!" Magnus insisted. He twined our fingers together and I squeezed his hand back. "I thought about it all night long."
Technically, that was only a matter of hours. I didn't think that really counted as a great deal of consideration. Then again, Magnus had been talking about the possibility of me moving in with him quite casually for a while. It just seemed crazy for him to make the formal offer right after a big argument.
Magnus had promised he would work on being less flirtatious with other people and I had promised myself that I wouldn't freak out after the tiny relapses. The little things like the way he spoke to his friends wasn't so bad because I knew nothing would come of it. After all Magnus had already changed a lot of the big stuff for my sake, and when all was said and done he had to be himself. From the moment I'd met him Magnus had been an outlandish character. He was confident with people; that had been part of his charm.
"I feel like all I do is change you." I muttered, mostly to myself because Magnus obviously hadn't been following my train of thought.
"With you I feel like I want to." Magnus assured me. Then, smirking, added. "And, besides, I know a change you can make for me."
"What's that?" I wondered, willing to listen to reason.
"Your address." Magnus grinned.
I rolled my eyes but I couldn't help but smile. Magnus could be very persistent when he wanted to be. I gave him a shove to the shoulder and watched him fall down onto the pillows. Suddenly I remembered how tired I was.
I crawled over Magnus' long legs and inserted myself beside him. It was a single bed so it was a tight fit, in spite of us both having slim builds. Magnus put his arms around me so that I wouldn't roll away.
"It's not worth going back to sleep now." He commented. "When do you have to get up for work?"
"I get up at six thirty." I told him. "Don't let me oversleep my alarm."
Magnus took one hand off me to get my phone from the bedside table. He checked the time before he groaned.
"Why do I have to be the one to stay up?" He questioned.
"Because it's your fault I'm tired right now." I reminded him, snuggling in to snatch the extra hour while I still had the chance. I tilted my head so that my boyfriend's shirt blocked out the light. "Banging on my door that way is not making me want to forgive you, by the way."
"It was a romantic gesture!" Magnus declared.
"It was annoying." I mumbled. "You've been watching too many Camille films..."
When Magnus tried to defend himself by saying he had to attend a lot of her premiers and watch the films in the past - seriously, how was he not more famous? - I put a finger on his lips so he'd shut up.
At six thirty I did hear my alarm go off after all. Then I laid there waiting to see if Magnus had stayed up to wake me or fallen asleep himself. When Magnus started kissing up my neck I realised he was going to make me regret giving him alarm duty. Yes, he would wake me up when I asked. However, his form of punishment was to make it so that I didn't want to get out of bed when he did.
Thank you to everybody reading, I hope that you liked the chapter. The next one should be 'Disappointment'.
(Fun-Fact: The original draft of this chapter was intended for 'Rent Worries Resolved'. Magnus was going to come try to save the day when Alec lost his job. I didn't like putting Alec in that damsel-in-distress role, though, so I changed the plan and put this idea on the back burner for almost twenty chapters... Hopefully it's better placed now.)
