"She's got a way about her I don't know what it is….She comes to me when I'm feelin' down inspires me without a sound…She's got a way….I don't know what it is…but there doesn't have to be a reason anyway"- Billy Joel
John gave a deep sigh to help cover his true feelings. He had been dreading this day since the end of November, in fact if he was honest he was dreading the next two holiday filled months. Whenever the holiday spirit set in the feelings of ultimate loneliness and depression consumed him.
John looked at his old and beaten wrist watch it was 11:30PM, he had planned to stay in his apartment all day and hope some criminal somewhere in New York hadn't taken the day off to enjoy Christmas with their families. Eventually the restlessness got the better of him and he decided to just walk around New York.
Jon looked at his phone again Joss had called him 3 times today asking him to join her and her family for dinner and each time he declined; he lied and said he had a number. He had resolved to keep to himself he didn't want to intrude on her family.
He couldn't remember the last time he had a holiday meal with family and friends, all he remembered was it was before his father had died. John sighed as he walked into his apartment. Hopefully tomorrow would pick up and he'd have something to do to keep himself preoccupied.
As soon as he shut the door the aroma of food caught his attention, which was strange because he never had any food in his home that wasn't instant or canned.
He made his way into the kitchen and flicked the lights on and looked at the lone folded note on his counter sitting next to a chocolate bunt cake on a glass stand. John made his way over to the note and picked it up.
'Check your fridge didn't know what you liked so I brought everything.-Joss P.S. I know you lied about a number and you're coming over for New Years Eve even if I have to handcuff you.'
John smiled as he read Joss' note. It would never cease to amaze him how she could make him smile and lift the dark clouds that always hung over his head. After he sat the note back down he moved towards the fridge and opened it. He stared in surprise at the plates and containers of holiday food that Joss left him. He smirked and shut the fridge.
John pulled out his phone as he moved towards his bed as he dialed her number so he could thank her. But before he hit send he noticed a small wrapped gift box on his bed. As he moved closer to his bed he picked up the box and sat down.
After a few moments of tracing the delicate wrapping he slowly opened the box.
A smiled spread across his face as he stared at the gun metal colored stainless steel watch nestled in a velvet laced box. John removed the watch from the box and admired the detail as he turned it around in his hand. As he unclasps the watch to put it on, he noticed the engraving on the back, 'Stay out of trouble – J'.
He stared at it for a few moments before the small chuckle in his throat became a full laugh.
