Last Chapter:

The carriage stopped a few feet away; the side door opening and a pair of black leather boots, followed by dark brown pants came out first. A coal gray shirt covered by a single leathered strap also appeared, and I brought my eyes up to look at the person's face. Blonde hair, the same color as mine, and dark blue eyes looked up in this direction, an arrogant smile playing at the lips of the man who stood there, facing us.

Rei brought me closer to him, almost crushing me in his grip and half hiding me with his body.

"Rin…meet my brother, Len…"

Chapter Two: The Brother

I gazed at the boy, my eyes searching for anything of him that was similar to Rei's. To my dismay, there was none; this man seemed to give off a cocky and arrogant aura, quite the opposite of Rei's gentle and calm composure. I wasn't the only one looking though.

Len's eyes raked over my body, seeming to judge every little detail that he saw of me. As soon as his eyes met mine, however, his eyes narrowed into a hungry look and he ran his tongue over his upper lip. I involuntarily shuddered, watching his smirk deepen at my reaction.

"What are you doing here, Len?" Rei's voice was low and cold as he spoke up. Len's eyes shifted from mine and looked into Rei's. Rei's gold eyes held no emotion and his lips were pressed into a thin line. Len stared back indifferently, his mouth no longer a smirk, but more of a lazy half smile.

"You don't sound very welcoming, dearest brother. Here I was expecting a hug and maybe a kiss on the cheek." Len said shaking his head as though he were disappointed, but his eyes told you other wise. Rei grunted in response to him.

"You weren't supposed to arrive until tomorrow. I'll ask you again; what are you doing here?" Rei repeated. The air was becoming tenser by the minute. I cleared my throat softly and gently tugged on Rei's jacket sleeve. Rei stiffened at first, but instantly relaxed as he looked down at me. Len must have noticed the way I clung onto Rei, because he was looking at me in a peculiar way.

"I'm surprised, brother; I didn't know you liked children. I imagined you with some dark haired maiden, who was more...filled out." Len said, sneering at both of us. I felt my eyes widen and I blinked in surprised. I know I wasn't the most mature girl in the village, but there wasn't anything wrong with being a late bloomer, right?

"Len, it's best that you refrain from saying such things about Miss Rin. That is, if you want to remain amongst the living." Rei said darkly, stepping towards Len. I could see the similarities now between Rei and Len now. Their eyes were the same shape, along with their nose, lips, and jaw structure. They were almost the same height too, but Rei stood a few centimeters taller than Len.

"Master Rei, it's fine, you don't have to defend me. I'm perfectly capable of holding my own against his snide comments." I spoke up. Len looked up in surprise before he snorted, looking at me as he laughed.

"Master? She calls you master?" Len inquired. Rei turned a little red in the face and sighed softly. I, on the other hand, felt my self start to lose my patience. Not only had he called me a child and mocked my body, but he was also laughing at the way I addressed Rei.

"Miss Rin has manners, unlike most people I know. She has class." Rei retorted at Len. "You mean she has class…for a village girl." Len said, his demeanor changing. His eyes had a glint to them, something that put me off immediately.

"Ma-… Rei, shall I leave for the meantime? I need to go fulfill my duties for today...and it seems as though you need to sort things out with your brother." I whispered to Rei softly. Rei nodded and gave a small smile. "Yes, I'm sorry for holding you up…may I request your presence at a later time today?" Rei said, his breath coming out in puffs from the cold air surrounding us.

I quickly nodded and waved as I headed off towards the stables at the edge of the village. I felt the necklace bouncing against my chest with every step I took. The snow was picking up, and I quickly sent out a silent prayer that my father and the village men would come home safely and quickly from their hunt. I also prayed that they wouldn't come across the wolves.

The pack consisted of ten members; four females and six males. I bit my lower lip and began to think of the pure black wolf, the one who had saved me many years ago. I could see the stables up ahead, and quickly picked up my pace.

The stables were large and made from oak wood that had lost its yellow sheen for an old rickety gray color. I quickly opened the doors, smelling the scent of wet hay and peat. It was warm inside and I quickly shut the door, feeling the goose bumps rise as the warm air hit against my cold skin. I let out a pleasant sigh and walked among the stalls, my boots sifting through the hay that had been spilt upon the peaty dirt way that led through the stalls.

Neighs and the quiet thud of hooves against the ground could be heard as I passed each stall. I'd glance over the bodies of several horses before I reached the last stall that held Maya. The yellow colored horse with a white mane and tail looked up at me as she saw me coming and snorted softly in greeting. She had been my mother's horse, but when my mother had passed on, she had been given to me.

I reached for the saddle and reins hanging on a nearby hook as I opened the stall door. I quickly saddled her up and climbed onto her back before leading her out into the oncoming snow. The wind had picked up, and the cold air blew against my face, causing my teeth to chatter. Other villagers waved to me as I passed by on Maya, while others only glanced at me, shaking their head, mumbling about how I would get myself killed one day.

They knew where I was going, and while they had tried countless times to dissuade me from going into the woods, they had eventually given up, only biding me farewell until I returned. I headed for the narrow trail that had been made from me either walking in there myself during the summer and spring, or Maya during the fall and winter. It was covered in fresh snow, not having been disturbed by any living thing until now, as I lead Maya past the trees.

Maya's hooves made a soft crunch as she walked throw the snow. Everything around me was covered in white powder that looked so fluffy, and made you want to lay in it and sleep. There was no sound, much less movement for miles around me. Everything had either flown south for the winter or was currently hibernating. There was no wind here, but it was still deathly cold. I scanned the ground for prints. After a while, I almost gave up, that is, until I found a pair of lone paw prints. They were fresh too, the new snow barely covering them.

It piqued my curiosity, and I quickly climbed down from Maya and followed them, grasping the reins to guide Maya. I ventured deeper and deeper into the woods, seeing the mountains that separated the village from the Royal City. The tracks began going down hill, and I did my best not to slide in the snow. I reached the bottom of the mountains, the prints no longer visible.

I sighed softly and turned around, heading back up the slope. The sky had begun to clear up, and soon the sun was reflecting off of the snow. As I was almost over the slope, the snow caved beneath me and I plunged into a deep crevice.
