I stared up at the big daddy in complete horror. Here I was on the ground near a giant Bouncer. All he had to do was step on me, and I'd be gone. Just like that, dead. I grabbed my pistol, and then he roared. I rolled out of the way of his charge. I stood up and aimed my pistol directly at his head. He looked around, confused for a moment. I fired my gun. He turned around, unharmed, and prepared for another charge, this time with his drill. I jumped out of the way of his charge again, and shot my pistol at him another time. Nothing was working, he seemed completely untouched by my bullets, even though I was hitting him. I may not be the super sharpshooter, but I can at least aim. He roared in frustration.
"Kill her, Daddy, KILL HER!" I heard the little girl scream. Have you ever heard a little girl scream "Kill her"? It's haunting. It's downright wrong, a small girl telling someone to murder another, it's wrong, just wrong! She was a sight for sore eyes. Her hair was dirty and tangled. Her dress was tattered—it had plenty of holes, totally ripped on one sleeve—and covered with grass stains, dirt, and something you would never expect to find all over a child's clothes: blood. Her eyes had this dead glow. They were bright green, all over. She looked positively ghoulish, but I felt sympathy for her. How could anyone do this to a child? Her life still hadn't really started, but she was like this, a monster.
The Bouncer charged at me a third time, I just barely missed his drill this time. I fired over and over again. He turned around. I aimed and pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. I kept pulling the trigger, still nothing happened. I was out of bullets. The Bouncer pounded the ground, and it shook like an earthquake. I fell over, now I was completely at his mercy. He walked over slowly, drill spinning in a gruesome circle, feet pounding like thunder as he trudged over to me. I put my hands out in front of me, and closed my eyes. Then I heard a roar from the big daddy, but his footsteps silenced. I looked up. The Bouncer was being electrocuted, but… how? I looked at my hands, the light was glowing even brighter now, but not because it was dark. I held them out again, they pulsed, and a lightning bolt shot out and hit the big daddy.
I took this opportunity, and I ran around the corner. I saw a pile of tall red tanks. I didn't know what was in them, but I picked one up anyway. It was heavy, but I carried it over to the trembling Bouncer and threw it. Upon contact with the big daddy the tank exploded and the big daddy flew backwards and landed lifelessly on the ground. The girl had fallen off his shoulder, she stood up from her little tumble, and ran over to the murderous thing. She began to sob, mourning the loss of her "father".
"Daddy? Daddy! Why won't you move Daddy? Get up Daddy! Please Daddy! Please get up!"
If you were around, you would have heard a loud crack, that was my heart breaking in two. She was screaming as if it was her real father who had died right before her very eyes. It was unbearable. I walked over to her. She took one look at me, and backed away. She fell backwards, but kept crawling back until she was up against the wall. I bent down to her level, she stared at me in fear with those awful looking eyes. I picked her up. She fought for her freedom from me. She kept screaming "NO!" and pulled on my arms, desperately trying to trigger their release, but to no avail. My hands started to glow, but not blue, white. I stared at my hands in astonishment. Now what was happening? First I can shoot lightning out of my hands, now what? The little girl tried to bite me, but I gently grabbed her head before she could. Her veins then lit up with the same white glow as mine. She stopped fighting and closed her eyes.
I let go, staring at my hands, what have I done?! Did I kill her? The little girl looked up at me, and I looked down at her. Her eyes were normal, her color had been restored. She said this to me, and this alone, "You saved me, thank you. Thank you so much." Then she ran off to a wall with a strange apparatus on it. It looked like a pink Sun with a black hole in the center, and then the metal would reach down to the floor and there was a small step. It almost looked like a bench, but it wasn't. She climbed up on the step, and jumped for the hole. She struggled to pull herself up, but finally accomplished just that. She successfully pulled herself into the hole and started crawling into the darkness.
I smiled, knowing she was now safe. I looked back at my hands, they were restored to my, now normal, glowing blue veins. I looked at the carcass of the big daddy that lay before me. He was rusty and dirty. His drill covered in dried blood from his previous encounters with other splicers. He had a face, but it wasn't a face. It was a big round shape with many circles of the color green. My dream! He was the monster, and I was little sister! What does this mean? Was it a flashback? Or was it just a dream based on experiences? The lights in the circles dimmed until they were completely black. I don't know. I'll have to talk to Tenenbaum about it. Tenenbaum! She hadn't contacted me in a while. I hadn't even told her that I met Julie! Julie! I still had to find her! I grabbed my empty pistol, and ran for the Rolling Hills (No joke intended).
I kept coughing until I reached Julie's office. The air was still bothering me, but it seemed to be getting better. Finally when the door closed was I able to breathe easy. I turned on my radio to let Julie know I was here.
"Miss Julie? This is Eve. I'm here in your office, and I'm on my way up to your lab." I said into the speaker.
No response.
"Miss Julie? Miss Langford? Can you hear me?"
No response.
"Are you really busy? I bet you are, well, anyway I'm on my way up."
I walked up the walkway, and opened the door. I saw a window that was coated with a green ooze, and there were backwards numbers written sloppily on the window with the last one trailing off a bit. Next to the numbers that were scrawled on the dirty window were hand-prints that seemed to claw at the window, and they trailed off to the bottom of the window. Something had happened. I ran through the entrance of the lab, I looked over at the window. Under the numbers and hand-prints lay the corpse of dead woman. She wore a green and white dress, and white shoes. Her hair was cut in a bob style and her brown locks were curled. I walked over to her, and saw a pair of broken glasses and an Accu-Vox next to her. There was a message engraved on the back of the Accu-Vox. The message read: "Property of Miss Professor Julie Langford."
Julie! She was dead! That explains why she never responded to my radio call! It looked as if someone gassed her to death, since there were no gunshot wounds, and she wasn't near anything electrical of flammable. I turned around. I saw a wall safe wide open. The numbers! They must've been a code. She had written the numbers for someone to open the safe for her! I looked out another window, and saw that the trees were alive again! But how? Who saved them? The mystery person. It had to be them. But why would they kill Julie to save her trees? Wouldn't she be happy to help? She called me in to help with her trees, so why did they kill her? Maybe they didn't. Ryan! He killed her! He released the gas into the air, and then released the toxic air into her lab! Goddammit! He won't even let me try to get a leg up!
With newfound anger I charged out of the lab, but not before I grabbed the extra pistol bullets lying on a table. I had to find this mystery person. Though I hated to admit it, I needed more help.
"Miss Tenenbaum? Are you there?"
"Yes, mein child. You are in Arcadia, yes?"
"Yes m'am, I'm in Arcadia. I met Julie too."
"You did? How is she doing?"
"She's dead."
" Vhat!? You killed her?!"
"No! I wouldn't do that, she tried to help me! Ryan gassed her to death!"
"Scheisse! She vould have been very helpful, but now she's gone! Damn Ryan!"
"Miss Tenenbaum? I met a little sister, and somehow I saved her. I don't know how though."
" Did your veins illuminate vith a vhite color?"
"Yes they did, how did you know?"
" Good, zhen zhe plasmid vorks perfectly. Zhe plasmid I gave you gives you zhe ability to remove zhe ADAM slug vithin zhem vithout killing zhe girls. Thank you for saving my little von."
"You're welcome. I still haven't found the mystery person, I have to keep going, glad to hear from you."
"You too, good luck. "
I turned off my radio, and kept walking. I had to find another bathysphere station, maybe I could cut them off before they leave. I found a map and ran towards the next bathysphere station going to Fort Frolic. When I finally reached the station, I heard the bathysphere door shut, and I watched in disappointment as in sank down into the ocean. Dammit! I ran back to my original bathysphere to see if I could redirect it to Fort Frolic, I knew for sure that was where the mystery person was headed.
I ran faster than I thought possible back to my bathysphere. I pulled the lever and the sign changed to Fort Frolic. I smiled. The chase was on! My bathysphere moved through the water and soon I could see a large building titled Fort Frolic. The building was almost completely covered in advertisements for businesses and attractions. The bathysphere glided to the entrance, locked into place, and once again ascended up a shaft.
The Bathysphere door opened with a loud creak. I stepped out and ran towards the exit. I followed a sign that pointed towards the Atrium, and followed it hoping it would lead me to the mystery person. It did. Standing before me was a man. He had straight dark hair, and he wore an off-white sweater with brown pants. He held pistol in his hand and his hands glowed with blue light. I loaded my gun and pointed it at the man.
"Who are you?" I asked him. He turned around. I saw his face, he looked so familiar. Then I realized he looked like the boy in my dream, but that wasn't all. He looked…like me.
