As it happened, the switch that Fitz flicked turned the device off and May's words immediately started ringing around the room.
"That is so cool." Fitz told them, fascinated with the device.
"The robbers got in through the hole and they didn't set the alarm off." The manager told Coulson.
"The only reason we are here is to retrieve the device. We will forward all of the evidence we recover to the local police so that they can conduct the investigation. We don't actually investigate robberies."
"But what does the device do? And why are you the ones to retrieve it?"
"We retrieve it as it is too dangerous for one nation to claim it as theirs. It could start wars that we, at S.H.I.E.L.D would rather not see."
"So that's it. You are just going to let the robbers get away?" The manager asked, anger flaring up.
"It is not our jurisdiction." Coulson repeated, indicating to the team it was time to go.
Fitz packaged up the device and handed it to Ward and they headed back to the cars.
They were driving back to the 'bus when Coulson looked in his rear view mirror. He saw the invisible force hit the side of car May was driving with an impact that sent the car flipping over four times, coming to rest on what was left of it's wheels.
Coulson slammed on the brakes, pulled the handbrake and spun the wheel to turn his car around, much to the surprise of Fitz-Simmons and Kain. They hadn't seen the other car get knocked off the road.
He sped towards the scene and checked on his team members.
Coulson instinctively ran to May's side first, while Simmons checked on Ward. May was unconscious and bleeding from a nasty looking head wound, but she was alive, so Coulson checked on Skye.
She was awake and seemed to be alright, except multiple cuts to her body.
"Are you ok?" he asked her.
"I don't know." She said as her body started to shake with adrenaline.
"You're awake, so I think you'll be ok?" Coulson reassured her, before heading around to check on the others. He got to Amber who was in the back seat, noticing as he did the door had been caved in slightly. He tried to open the door and couldn't, so he reached through the shattered window to check her vital signs. She, like May was unconscious, but still alive.
Lastly he went to Ward, who Simmons had gone straight to. His door had clearly taken most of the impact and had crumpled in. Ward's badly mangled body was wrapped around it. He didn't look good, but Simmons was working on him through the broken window so he must still be alive.
Fitz had gone straight to the boot, where he had seen Ward put the 0-8-4, except it was gone.
Kain was trying to get Skye out of the car. He was struggling to unfasten her seatbelt. When he did, he slowly helped Skye to her feet, where she immediately dropped to the floor and vomited.
Coulson heard sirens approaching in the distance, so he got the emergency blanket out of the car and wrapped it around Skye. Figuring that it would be better to get her out of view of the car he placed her in the back of his and held her in his arms.
"Kain. Keep an eye on May and Amber. They're out but don't seem to be in any immediate danger. Inform me immediately if anything changes." Coulson instructed the intern.
Within minutes three fire engines and two ambulances arrived and shooed Simmons out of the way and started cutting the car to pieces, first removing the damaged windshield, then the doors and finally the roof came off.
May was extracted from the car first. She was fitted with a spinal collar and placed on a board before being ushered into the back of an ambulance. Coulson sent Skye with her to get checked over too.
Amber was removed from the car next and also put in the back of an ambulance.
Ward, taking most of the impact, proved more complicated to remove. The fire service found they pretty much had to cut the front of the car off to get him out. They were still surprised that he had managed to survive so far. They called for a helicopter to take him to the hospital where the emergency medical team would be waiting for him.
