The first one we were sent to kill, was a Mr. Martin Finnegan. He was the first of Cohen's "disciples", so to speak. Cohen rambled on about how Martin had been hiding out somewhere in Poseidon Plaza. Jack and I inched toward the entrance into the plaza, and then I stopped in my tracks.
"Wait! I hear something…"
We listened intently. The faint echo of a song tiptoed through the halls of Fort Frolic. The voice of a young girl sounded out.
"In the garden we are growing, many changes there'll be flowing! If you wanna be amazing, see the flowers we've been raising!"
Jack and I turned around, and followed the sounds as they repeated two more times. We then came upon a machine. I read the top: "Gatherer's Garden".
"Hey! This is the machine that gave me the electric stuff!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah, this is a Gatherer's Garden. These things sell different plasmids. You got any ADAM?" Jack asked.
"Yes, I have some from the little sister I saved earlier." I replied.
"My daddy's smarter than Einstein, stronger than Hercules, and lights a fire with a snap of his finger! Are you as good as my daddy, mister? Not until you visit the Gatherer's Garden, you aren't! My daddy gets spliced at the garden!" the machine sounded.
"Lights a fire with the snap of his finger? Hm… that sounds like fun!"
I pushed a button on the machine labeled "Incinerate!", and out popped another red glowing vile.
"Well, drink up." Jack said.
I popped the top off of the vile, as if it was a bottle of soda, and gulped down the liquid as quickly as possible. Immediately, I felt a change in my body, my temperature was rising. I felt a sudden burning sensation in my arms all the way up to my fingertips. My glowing blue veins were replaced with luminous red and orange ones, and my skin turned black like ashes. My entire hand looked like a volcano, just waiting to erupt. Jack and I stared in shock, I lifted my finger and a small burst of flame shot out of my hand and ignited a nearby plant. In a few mere seconds, the fern was reduced to a pile of ashes on the floor. I looked at Jack, and he looked back at me, both of us stunned.
"Whoa!" Jack said in amazement.
"That…was… AWESOME!" I blurted, "Did you SEE that! I just burnt down that friggin plant! With one little point of a finger!"
"Yeah, let's go. I don't want you to get carried away with that." Jack said.
I giggled sinisterly as we walked back towards Poseidon Plaza. On the way I pointed at random objects on our path and set them ablaze. Each time I saw the ember fly off my fingers, I snickered even more. Jack walked slightly ahead of me. I lagged behind so he wouldn't see my little tricks. A nearby splicer caught my eye. He was screaming at a broken vending machine. Jack didn't seem to notice, his eyes fixated on the bulkhead door. I looked at the splicer, not saying a word, raised my fingers and snapped. The splicer immediately combusted, he started screaming. He started smacking himself in a desperate attempt to put out the fire that engulfed him. The splicer's panic seemed to break Jack of his concentration, and get his attention. We both watched the splicer run around screaming for a few more seconds, then watched him collapse to the ground. Jack just stared, I burst out in laughter.
"What the hell was that?!" Jack asked in surprise.
"HAHAHAHAHA! I just set that guy on fire! HA!" I laughed.
"Come on, let's just go."
"Hehehe, okay." I agreed.
We resumed walking, again I lagged behind as Jack took the lead. I'd become a bit of a pyromaniac. I kept lighting things on fire and quietly chuckling as they burnt to the ground. I lit a trash can on fire and something inside it went BOOM. I started laughing a little louder. Jack must've heard me this time because he stopped and turned around. I was about to light another plant on fire when I heard his voice.
"What are you doing?" Jack said.
"AAAAAH! I WASN'T RANDOMLY LIGHTING THINGS ON FIRE IF THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK!" I exclaimed, surprised. Now I knew I was caught red-handed. Well, more like red, orange, and yellow-handed, but you get the point. Jack had startled me when he caught me- I thought he wasn't paying attention. I guess I was wrong. Jack just stared at me, obviously not amused.
"…."
"That…uh…that came out wrong." I said nervously, "I'm in trouble, aren't I?"
"Yes, yes you are." Jack replied.
Busted.
The bulkhead door opened to a frozen tunnel. Every last inch of the hallway was covered in ice. Icicles hung from the ceiling, and the ice crystals glittered in the light. The floor was slippery, Jack and I almost slipped a few times. Suddenly, a voice came out of nowhere. It was grizzly and haunting.
"Iiii can seeeeee your brEEEEEAAAaaathhh….!" The voice said.
Jack and I seemed to breath in quiet unison. Warm puffs of air formed in front of our faces, rising then disappearing. I walked slightly forward, Jack followed. I listened intently to the sounds of our footsteps. I kept walking through the tunnel with Jack behind me; I heard two sets of footsteps, his and mine. I took a few more steps forward, then something changed. The air felt heavier, then lighter, as if it was moving. I dismissed it. It was probably just my imagination, or side effect from the plasmids, hallucinations. But then I realized something else: I heard only one set of footsteps now. I stopped, in a bit panic, and turned around quickly. Jack was nowhere to be found. I looked around frantically, scared to be alone in the iced-over passageway. I ran back the way I came. Then I saw it. Jack was frozen solid, paralyzed in fear, but before my mind could register what had happened I felt cold breath on the back of my neck. I tried to scream, but nothing came out. I looked at my hands. They were freezing right before my very eyes. I looked up, then my vision became glassy like ice. This was it. I was finished. Finished before I had even scratched the surface. Frozen and left to die in this godforsaken tunnel. Forever.
