"What possessed you to go for a walk?" Coulson asked when he visited later that day.
"I got bored." Ward explained for what felt like the millionth time.
"Do you have any idea what havoc you caused?"
"I didn't mean to. I intended on being back in my bed before anyone noticed, but I fell asleep."
"Do you know what happened yet?" Coulson asked him. Skye had told him that Ward's memory was a little fuzzy.
"Yeah. It all came back last night. I saw May and Amber. Are they alright?" Ward asked.
"They'll be fine. I think you've had a bigger influence on Amber than we thought. Her injuries could be career ending and she's refusing to give up."
"And Skye?"
"I am surprised it's taken you this long!" Coulson told him with a smile.
"The way she was shouting at me earlier, I figured she was ok. Didn't really want to ask her when she was that hysterical."
"She's fine. Bumps and bruises mainly. Her broken shoulder is now dislocated too but she was given the all clear." Coulson told him.
"Good." Ward said.
"Has anyone told you what you've done?"
"Not officially. I know I have a few broken ribs, a pain in my hip and mummy bandages on my arm and leg."
"You are right about the ribs. You dislocated your elbow which is why is wrapped up tight. You have a small fracture to the socket in your hip, which is where that pain comes from and your knee. Well, surgeons here were doubtful they could repair it. Then the doctor that was here this morning arrived and took over your case. He took you into surgery to repair it."
"What happened to it?"
"He said you'd torn most of the ligaments holding it together."
"No wonder he was pissed off when I went for a walk!"
"Skye said he hit you round the back of the head."
"Yeah. The look on her face was funny." Ward said.
Coulson looked at him in concern.
"Painkillers." Ward offered in by way of an explanation.
"They sending you loopy?" Coulson asked.
"Quite probably."
"So how do you know the doctor?"
"What makes you think I know him?"
"He swanned in here uninvited and took over your treatment."
"Oh. That."
Coulson was starting to get frustrated. Ward was acting like he had just stepped out of an insane asylum. He could see Ward's attention wavering so he snapped his fingers in front of his face.
"Ward?"
"Yeah." Ward asked, snapping out of his trance.
"Who is the doctor?"
"What doctor?"
"Gahhh!" Coulson cried before he left the room to visit May and Amber before visiting hours were over.
Skye saw Coulson leaving and entered the room.
"How did you annoy him this time?"
"Wouldn't tell him how I know the good doctor."
"How do you know the good doctor?"
Ward smiled at her and held his good arm out. She took it and he pulled her in close for a kiss.
Skye pulled away from him.
"No more until you tell me why the doctor arrived and is in sole charge of your care, and more importantly why you are listening to him when you don't generally listen to doctors."
At that point the doctor arrived to check on Ward before heading back to his hotel.
"So tell me doc. What's this knee now made of?" Ward asked, nodding towards his bandaged knee, hoping Skye would get the hint.
"This knee is made of bone. The ligaments however, are made of a special gold titanium alloy blend only found in specific items on the planet." The doctor answered him.
"Hmm... Interesting choice."
"I would have used Vibranium, but we used the last of it in the other knee." The doctor told him, administering the last of the days pain relief.
Suddenly a light bulb went off in Skye's head.
"Wait, you're the doctor who replaced his knee?" She whispered.
"I am. When Natasha called me and said there'd been an accident I knew I would be needed. When I had taken a look at the scans I called Tony and he designed the ligaments so I could repair your knee. It was agreed a replacement would be a little on the extreme side this time. Now it's time I how wasn't here. I will stop by tomorrow."
