Skye and Ward returned to the banqueting room and retook their seats. Anabelle approached them and asked them if everything was alright. They said it was fine and she could serve the dessert when the kitchen was ready.
Within five minutes the dessert had arrived. Skye had a chocolate cake, but Anabelle had remembered Ward saying he didn't really eat chocolate, so had arranged with the kitchen to give him the alternative which was Lemon Cheesecake.
"And why do you have cheesecake?" Skye asked him, slightly confused.
"Because Anabelle is apparently very good at her job and has a good memory." Ward responded with a gleam in his eye.
"So it wasn't on that note you passed to her?" Skye asked.
"No. That was asking for her to make sure Tilly had cheesecake. She's allergic to chocolate. It's why I don't eat much of it."
"Why didn't you say something?"
"Would it have changed your decision. I knew you wanted the chocolate cake the second they brought it out. Here. Try this." He told her, breaking a piece off his cheesecake and feeding it to her.
"That is so much nicer." Skye complained.
"Then why didn't you pick it?" Ward asked with a laugh.
"It didn't taste that nice at the tasting."
Ward fed Skye another bite of the cheesecake, before pushing her the plate and pulling her chocolate cake towards him.
After two bites of it though he decided it was too rich for him and pushed it away.
"You don't want it?" Simmons asked him.
"No, you eat it if you want it."
Simmons pulled his plate towards her and split the remaining cake into two. She walked over to Fitz and placed one half of the cake onto his plate.
When the desserts had been eaten and cleared and waiters had gone around everyone and poured champagne Anabelle announced that it was time for the speeches, followed by the cutting of the cake.
"First we have Phil Coulson, who gave away the bride, then we shall hear from the groom and finally the best man." She almost shouted to the crowded room.
A round of applause erupted as Coulson stood up, holding neatly written note cards in front of him. He swallowed a few times and took a sip of champagne before starting:
"Ladies and gentlemen unfortunately it is time for a select few of us to arise from our chairs and entertain you with witty banter and stories reflecting on the bride and groom. So whilst I am sure the remaining speakers are DESPERATE to get up and give their respective speeches you will have to bear with me as I am first to step up to the plate.
As this is my first wedding let alone my first wedding speech I was given very specific instructions from those in greater authority as to what I am allowed to say.
For those who do not know me I'm Phil, I am Skye and Grant's team leader and I've been given the great honour of giving Skye away to Grant. At this moment in time I am full of admiration and pride for the commitment they have both made today.
Firstly I wish to convey my heartfelt thanks to everyone in attendance today particularly those who have travelled some distance to be with us on Skye and Grant's special day.
Today has been an absolutely fantastic day and all the credit in the world goes to the happy couple for putting in so much hard work into making today a success. I would also like to thank the photographer and all the staff here at Mead House who have made the day a success, especially the bar staff who I will personally ensure remain busy for the majority of the evening."
Coulson paused long enough to take another sip of his drink.
"Skye and I have always shared a close relationship. I can think back and remember some of the great memories we've shared. From the times she used to hide in my car and call me AC to make me sound cooler. From the time we caught her in a compromising situation with a person we needed to talk to and the time she relentlessly spent looking for me when I was kidnapped. I have always seen Skye, and Jemma, the Maid of Honour as daughters. Even then I never imagined in a million years that Skye would ask me to give her away. When she did, I must admit I was choking back tears.
I believe Oscar Wilde said 'we are all lying in the gutter... but some of us are looking at the stars' and I hope you will continue to reach for the reach for not only the stars... but another Bacardi.
To Grant. Where do I begin? I am delighted Skye has picked you to be the one she spends her life with. I started to suspect your feelings for Skye when you gave her your leather jacket. For those of you who don't know, Grant does not part with that jacket. I then realised your feelings were serious when I caught you on the roof."
Ward blushed. He had forgotten about that.
"So ladies and gentlemen I would like you all to raise a glass to toast the happy couple. Two of the finest people in all of our lives. Lets hope they have a long and happy marriage and may one day be blessed with a family of their own. Cheers" Coulson concluded, pointing his glass to the air, the 'cheers' of his speech being echoed around the room and his actions mimicked by the rest of the guests.
