Chapter 27
Almost as if by some twisted kind of fate, Cora marched into the hospital room again, followed closely by Henry who seemed just slightly happier than a few hours ago. The brown-haired boy quickly made his way over to the bed and climbed on top of Emma's lap in order to have a closer look at his apparent other mother. It miraculously made perfect sense to him since once he opened the storybook; it had completed itself as if by force of magic. He just instantly believed in it. He was only a kid and the world was still so unknown to him. Believing in magic seemed to be an easy and appealing thing to do.
The boy breathed out in awe and smiled broadly as he spoke up. "Look, ma! Gina here."
The two women laughed at their son's cuteness and exchanged loving gazes for a short while. Emma thought Henry didn't understand what the book actually meant in its entirety and was thus the first one to say something.
"That's right, Henry. Regina is actually… well, this is kinda hard to explain…"
As soon as Regina noticed that the blonde struggled to find appropriate words, she interfered, knowing that her wife might underestimate their son.
"Little prince, you know exactly who I am, don't you?"
"You my mom!" Henry exclaimed happily, grinning as he instantly flung his tiny arms around Regina.
The older woman chuckled breathily and hugged him back while her heart fluttered like crazy in her chest. She was overwhelmed with feelings once more and tears slowly formed in her eyes. Regina was reunited with her family after six years of finding a way back to them and of about six months of not knowing anything about them. She had been trapped inside of Storybrooke with an utter emptiness inside of her, living a lie that somehow had been created. However, the brunette couldn't concentrate on any of these misleading and saddening emotions right now. She could only enjoy the moment.
"You're done?" Cora asked with an unamused voice, still standing in the hospital room when she interrupted.
"Oh mother, I'm so immensely happy to see you, too." Regina replied in a sarcastic manner.
Henry retreated then, looking at the brunette's mother and thus Regina was forced to let go of her son. And it felt as if she could hardly do so. She never wanted to let him or Emma ever go again.
"We have some more pressing issues to discuss." Her mother carried on, looking very serious and not at all moved by the scene in front of her.
"I have found my family. I am home. And you're not going to tear that away from yet another time. Have you understood?" The brunette hissed through gritted teeth as she eyed Cora intently.
"I suppose, we have to postpone this conversation then." Regina's mother replied with a smirk on her face before she turned around in order to leave.
The woman in the hospital bed spoke up nonetheless, stopping Cora right in her tracks, "I don't want to talk to you ever again."
Regina's eyes followed her mother's movements as the latter turned around and replied, "Believe me, we are going to talk sooner or later. And you will need to. You will need answers. I'm the only one who can provide them."
After she had said, she walked out of the hospital room, leaving a stunned blonde, a confused brunette and their son behind.
Emma frowned a little as she took her wife's hands in her own, squeezing them softly and spoke up, "Don't let her get to you. She can't separate us."
The brunette shook her head in response, a few tears slipping down her cheeks. A deep breath left her lungs before she managed to say something.
"She did it once. She can do it again."
"Mom." Henry whispered suddenly and his tiny fingers found their way through Regina's unruly hair. He continued with up tilted lips as soon as he noticed that the brunette locked eyes with him, "She don't hurt you, no. Henry and mama save you."
Regina gave the little boy a warm and yet watery smile and kissed him on the bridge of his nose, causing him to giggle lightly. The blonde nestled closer to the both of them by hugging Henry and pecking the brunette's cheek.
"Regina, love, let's just go home first. Your father and my parents have probably missed us like crazy."
The brunette smiled at her lover and answered with husky voice.
"You're probably right, dear."
After a few minutes at Mary Margaret's apartment
"Emma." Snow breathed out happily as she walked over to her blonde daughter and instantly engulfed the younger woman in a tight hug.
The warmth of the embrace felt welcoming to Emma and she felt even more at home all of a sudden. Until that very moment she didn't even know how much she had missed her mother, how she had missed this simple motherly attention. It came so naturally to both of them even if they had lived almost seven years apart from one another.
Emma didn't even know that she had parents for six whole years while Snow mourned over the loss of her only child. The woman with the pixie haircut had occasionally tried to speak with Regina, to make her feel better in some way, but it was pretty obvious that the dark-haired woman wished to be left alone. The princess of the Dark Kingdom harbored her feelings and lost herself inside of the darkest. Nobody had been able to help her out of her inner conflict and her obsession with finding her wife and getting her happy ending.
A few tears slipped from both of their eyes as they finally let go of each other in order to lock eyes. Emma smiled broadly at her mother who looked just as happy and relieved.
"You're home." The brunette whispered with a hitch in her voice as she took her daughter's hands in her own.
She squeezed them gently before she turned a little to face Regina and…
"Is that…" Snow breathed in shock and amazement alike once she had set eyes on that tiny brown-haired boy who looked strangely like her daughter…but also a lot like Regina. However, before she could finish her question, the dark-haired woman, standing close to him spoke up with a beaming smile.
"Yes. Meet Henry, our son."
