ch 16: Raising a pokemon
It was early in the morning onboard the SS Anne and Ash was up training his pokemon inside the recreation area of the ship.
"Squirtle use Watergun, Charizard Flamethrower." Ash said.
"Squirtle!" Squirtle shouted as he unleashed a jet of water from his mouth.
Charizard also opened his mouth and unleashed a medium sized Flamethrower, trying not to envelope him.
The two attacks met and kept each other at bay. Squirtle gave everything he had to try and push the flamethrower back, and eventually was able to start moving his water closer to Charizard.
"That's it." Ash said.
He had been up since sunrise training his pokemon. Squirtle and Bulbasaur were exhausted, while Pidgeotto and Butterfree weren't quite as tired.
"Alright that's enough Charizard." Ash said. Charizard ended the flamethrower as Squirtle began panting.
"Alright guys that's enough training for now. How about some breakfast?" Ash asked.
"Saur." Bulbasaur said nodding. Ash turned to Charizard and Pikachu .
"What about you two, do you want to eat or do your training?" Ash asked.
"Pika!" Pikachu said sparking his cheeks .
"Grauuu!"Charizard said puffing smoke from his nostrils.
"Alright I'll feed these guys, first then we can get some real training in." Ash said. After giving each of his other pokemon their food, Ash went back to Charizard and Pikachu.
His other pokemon watched as Pikachu and Charizard went through a harder training session then they thought they could ever do.
"Pika." Pikachu said panting.
"Alright guys, good work." Ash said as he wiped sweat off his own forehead. Ash always did the aura guardian exercises Felix taught them with his pokemon while they trained.
As Ash gave Pikachu and Charizard their food , Serena finished up the last lap of her 2 mile run. She stopped and tried to catch her breath before noticing Ash and his pokemon.
Absol stepped up behind her as Charla and Nidoran slowly walked over, trying to catch their breath from the run.
"Nice work guys." Serena said before returning her pokemon. She walked over to Ash who was using his work out shirt to wipe the sweat off his face.
"How's the training going Ash?" She asked.
"Morning Serena, It's going great. I got a session in with Pikachu and Charizard too." Ash said.
"That's good. I got my run in, Nidoran didn't quit halfway through either." Serena said.
That was when Ash's stomach growled.
"Oh I guess I haven't had breakfast yet." Ash said sweat dropping.
"Neither have I, I didn't want to eat then run." Serena said.
"Well they should still be serving breakfast down at the buffet area." Ash said before he returned his other pokemon and Pikachu climbed onto his shoulder.
Down at the breakfast area they met Brock and Lucy.
"So what time is the SS anne going to dock at Port a vista?" Ash asked.
"About 12:40. But debarking time is 2:00." Brock said.
"So Celadon city is our next destination, where are we going after that?" Lucy asked.
"Well my next showcase is in a place called Lavender town." Serena said.
"If we want to get to Lavander town the fastest way is through Saffron city." Brock said.
"There's a gym in Saffron city, but we can wait until after your showcase." Ash said.
"Yeah as much time away from that gym as possible." Brock said.
"What's wrong with the Saffron city gym?" Serena asked.
"My dad always said the gym leader there was really creepy and kept to themselves." Brock said.
"I've heard that too." Lucy said.
Later the group debarked from the ship and made their way out of the pier.
"Wow this place is beautiful." Serena said looking at the beach and ocean.
"Ashamed we can't spend some time here." Brock said.
"Didn't we just have a beach day like 3 days ago." Lucy said.
"Right." Brock and Serena said sweat dropping.
"You know, while where here do you mind if we stop at the guardian guild?" Lucy asked.
"Sure, why?" Ash asked.
"I heard an old friend of mine is going to be there and I wanted to catch up with her." Lucy said.
"Alright lead the way." Serena said. Ash and Lucy lead the others to the secret entrance to the hidden guardian guild.
When they reached the doorway Lucy placed her hand on the door and the center glowed blue. Moments later the door opened and an aura guardian wearing a white robe stood on the other side.
"Welcome to the Port a vista guild. If you're here to see the guild master I'm afraid she's out." The guardian said.
"We're not here for her." Lucy said as she walked in with the others.
The Port a vista guild seemed very similar to the one in Viridian city. There were several areas where a few guardians were talking, writing, or working on computers. There was also an area where they saw a pair of guardians locked in hand to hand combat with their pokemon fighting beside them.
"Who are we looking for exactly?" Serena asked.
That was when Brock saw another guardian sitting at a table ahead of them. She wore a blue and brown robe. She also wore a black belt with a blue stripe on it around her robe. She also wore blue gloves with her mega evolution stone on her left ring finger . The girl had dark brown hair and brown eyes with glasses on and looked about Lucy's age.
Sitting on the table in front of her was none other than an Eevee whom she was petting.
"I'm sure I'll find a home for you today." She said.
Moments later the woman turned over and saw them.
"Lucy? Ash? Serena?" She said.
The others turned and saw her. Ash and Serena realized it was none other than Diana.
"Diana!" Lucy almost shouted. She went over and hugged Diana.
"Geez how long has it been?" Diana asked.
"Too long." Lucy said.
"How do you know Ash and Serena?" Diana asked.
"Wait you know them?" Lucy asked.
"Diana I didn't know you were back in Kanto." Ash said.
"I didn't know you were back here either." Diana asked.
"So you know Lucy?" Serena asked.
"Know her , she's one of my oldest friends. She and I were both trained at the same time. But how do you know Ash and Serena?" Lucy said.
"Well five years ago during the incident in Kalos I was there with Dakota and when it happened. I offered my help to the Kalos guardians and that's when I met Ash and Serena." Diana said.
"Speaking of which, where is Dakota?" Ash asked.
"He's competing in the battle frontier right now." Diana said.
"Oh Brock, I'm sorry. Diana this is Brock." Lucy said.
"Pleasure to meet you." Brock said.
"So what brings you to Port a vista?" Lucy asked.
"Well a few days ago Dakota and I were traveling to Saffron city when we came across this hurt Eevee." Diana said revealing the Eevee.
"Aww, he's so cute." Serena said.
"There had been a storm there the night before and he broke his leg and became separated from his mother. So I decided to take him here and try to find him a proper home." Diana said.
"I see, well I'm sure the other guardian here could find him a home." Lucy asked.
"Some of them offered, but I was the one who found this Eevee. It's my responsibility to find him a proper home. Or at least it was. Truth be told I think it might have a better idea. I was going to head back to the area I found Eevee and see if I can find his mother. " Diana asked.
"Well we could help you." Brock said.
"It's ok, I couldn't ask you guys to do that." Diana asked.
"It's no trouble, it's right along the way we're going." Ash said.
"Yeah we'd love to help." Lucy said.
"Alright let's head out then." Diana said. She was about to pick up Eevee when he did something else. He leapt onto the ground and walked over to Serena.
"Eve." he said.
"Huh." Serena said.
"Eve!." He said smiling.
"I think he wants Serena to carry him." Brock said.
"Why?" Serena asked.
"I guess he just likes you." Diana said.
Serena picked him up.
"Alright we're going to find your mother little guy." Serena.
"Eve!" he said.
It took them twenty minutes before they got out of the city and to the wooded areas near route 7.
"Alright we aren't that far from where I found him. Hopefully we can find her soon." Diana said.
"Not too soon, this guy is just too cute." Serena said as the Eevee rubbed his face against hers.
"So how exactly are we going to find her?" Brock asked.
"Well we could ask the pokemon." Lucy said.
"Yeah we'd just need to synchronize with the aura around us to find some pokemon." Ash said. Ash , Lucy, and Diana quickly scaled the trees around them.
"Eevee!" Eevee said as Serena held him.
"You know you kind of remind me of Delphox back when she was a Fennekin." Serena said.
"Hey Serena, do you mind if I hold him for a second. The fact that Eevees can evolve into different pokemon has always intrigued me." Brock said.
"Alright." Serena said. She tried to hand him off to Brock, but as soon as she did, Eevee started to squirm and tried to get out of his arms.
"Woah are you ok?" Brock asked.
"Eevee!" He shouted as he jumped out of Brock's arms and ran back over to Serena.
"Eeve!" He said as he tried to climb up Serena's leg.
"I guess he only wants you to hold him." Brock said.
"Alright, I don't mind. Come on up here." Serena said as she picked him up.
"Eevee!" He said rubbing his head against Serena's face.
Once Ash, Lucy, and Diana reached the tops of the trees they synchronized their auras to the area around them. When they did they each saw a group of pokemon around the area.
"I found some". Ash said to the others via aura message.
"Me too." . Lucy said.
"Alright let's split up and ask them" Diana said. Each performed a leap of faith into a pile of leaves below and made their way towards the pokemon.
Ash approached a group of Vulplix, Meowth, and Growlithe who were drinking from a small stream.
When they saw him Ash communicated with their aura to tell them he was friendly. After feeling Ash's aura the pokemon came over to him.
"Pikachu Ask them if they know about Eevee's mother." Ash said.
"Pika, Pikachu." Pikachu said asking them if they knew about a young Eevee and his mother.
"Moewth."
"Val". They said. Pikachu turned to Ash and shook his head.
"Dam, alright we'd better keep looking." Ash said.
Elsewhere Diana and her Blastoise came up to an Oddish, Bellsprout, and Rattata.
She used her aura to try and attract the pokemon and get them to trust her.
"Grooou." Her Blastoise said asking them about Eevee.
"Sprout."
"Odds." The pokemon said shaking their heads.
"Well they don't know." Diana said.
Lucy and her Seviper stood in front of a Jigglypuff, Mankey and Pidgeotto.
Like the others Lucy used her aura to gain the packmen's trust before Seviper asked them about Eevee.
"Ott."
"Mankey." Two of them said shaking their heads.
"Jiggly," Jigglypuff said nodding.
"Sevi!" Seviper said smiling as he asked more about where Eevee's mother was.
"Jigglypuff." Jigglypuff said.
Seviper's face became nervous looking as he turned to Lucy and explained to Lucy what Jigglypuff said through their aura connection.
"Oh that's not good." Lucy said.
A few minutes later Ash and Diana had met up the others.
"No sign of her?" Brock asked.
"We haven't found anything." Diana said.
"Neither have we." Ash said. He and Diana both noticed Eevee was gone.
"Hey where's Eevee?" Diana asked.
"Shhh." Serena said before she snuck up to a bush and then thrusted her hands inside. She came out with Eevee in hands.
"Found you." Serena said.
"Eevee!".
"Well you two seem to be getting along just fine." Diana said.
Ash was also intrigued by this. He used tried to read the Eevee's aura and saw exactly what was going on.
"How about that." Ash said giving a slight smile.
Moments later Brock saw Lucy and her Seviper come back.
"Hey guys, I think we found out what happened." Lucy said. Brock's face turned red as he rushed over and took her hands.
"I knew you would. You're so skilled at what you do, and so beautiful." Brock said as Lucy's face turned red.
"Well been a while since he's done that." Serena said as she , Ash, and Pikachu sweat dropped.
"What is he doing?" Diana asked.
"His passion lives close to the surface, and he loves pretty girls." Serena said.
"Uh, anyway , Eevee is your mother a Flareon with a grey birthmark on her side?" Lucy asked Eevee.
"Eve!" Eevee said nodding.
"Well that's what I was afraid of. I'm afraid she's gone." Lucy said.
"Gone? What happened to her?" Serena asked.
"Apparently she was looking for him this morning with the Jigglypuff we were talking to , when a young trainer saw her. He used a Squirtle to battler Flareon before catching her and leaving." Lucy said.
"Then that means." Brock said.
"Eevee!" Eve said still smiling, not understanding what was going on.
"Oh boy, how are we going to explain this to Eevee?" Serena asked.
"Maybe one of our Pokemon should." Ash said.
"Pika." Pikachu said nodding. Ash walked over to Serena as Pikchu moved to the end of Ash's shoulder and took a deep breath.
"Pika, Pikachu." He said slowly.
"Eeve?" Eevee said now sounding confused.
"Chu, Pikachu." Pikachu said as he finished explaining.
"Eevee." Eevee said as his eyes began to tear up.
"Eve!" He cried as tears ran down from his face.
"It's ok, everything will be alright." Serena said as she tried to comfort him as Eevee buried his head into her chest.
"That's so sad." Brock said.
"Well, what should we do now? I suppose we could bring him back to the guild and have the guardians there look after him." Lucy said.
"I don't know, he won't have much of a life there. But we can't just release him into the wild, he's too young. He'd never survive on his own."Diana said.
"Well, what if we taught him." Ash said.
"Taught him?" Serena asked.
"Yeah teach him the basis of survival." Lucy said.
"I don't know guys, that doesn't seem like the best idea." Serena said.
"Well, he's young but not too young. Pokemon at that age do absorb a lot of information. We could try." Diana said.
"Serena might be right guys." Brock said.
"It's no harm trying." Ash said.
"Pika." Pikachu said nodding.
""Sigh" Alright." Serena said.
A few minutes later the group was nearing a set of oran berry bushes.
"Alright the first step of survival is finding a proper food source, like this oran berry bush." Lucy said.
"Severe" Seviper said.
"So just try to follow Seviper's steps." Lucy said.
Eevee felt his stomach growl.
"Sevip." Seviper said explaining they would eat soon.
Siviper slowly slithered his way through the grass with Eevee trying to follow.
A few minutes later Seviper had surveyed the land properly and located a large pecha berry bush.
"Seviper." He said smiling. He turned around to see that Eevee was gone.
"Seven?" He said. He slithered around the area until he found Eevee had gotten completely lost.
"Eevee!" He shouted.
"Seviper." Severe said sweat dropping.
A few minutes later he had brought him back to the others and explained to Lucy what had happened.
"Well that didn't work." Lucy said sweat dropping.
Eevee felt his stomach growl again and gave a short whine.
"Here, try some of this pokemon food." Serena said as she took out some of her custom food and gave it to Eevee.
"Eevee!" He shouted as he quickly started eating it.
"Well forging for food didn't go so well. But it's not the only thing that he'll need to learn." Diana said.
After Eevee finished his food Diana and her Blastoise stepped up.
"Alright the next thing you'll need to know is how to make a proper shelter of find shelter in case of a storm." Diana said.
Blastoise went below a tree and revealed a burrow made by another pokemon.
"Oou." He said before showing him another area.
Eevee tried to follow but every time he did he either couldn't properly use the shelter, or even see it.
"Grow." Blastoffs said sweat dropping as Eevee was stuck under a pile of sticks.
"Alright we're still not getting anywhere." Diana said sweat dropping.
Serena took the sticks off him and lifted him up.
"Maybe we should take a break." Serena said.
"Alright." Diana said.
Serena and Brock were with Eevee while Ash and the others sat a few feet away.
"So what have you been up to the last 5 years?" Ash asked.
"Not too much, Dakota and I got married 2 years ago."
"Oh congratulations." Ash said.
"We tried to settle down , but my work with as a guardian has kept us from my wedding I haven't been able to see you much Lucy. Except on the occasional assignment." Diana said.
"Well being a frontier brain takes up lot of time." Lucy said.
"Then why are you traveling with Ash and Serena?" Diana asked.
"Well, it's just that. I've been cooped up at the battle pike too long. I need to get out and see Kanto again. Any good guardian should do such a thing, reappreciate the land and life they protect." Lucy said.
"What about that Brock, I noticed you didn't seem to stop him when he took your hands." Diana said.
"It's nothing." Lucy said blushing.
"Right, of course. Anyway, Ash what have you been up to n the last 5 years?".
"Well I've been competing in the NPC. Now I'm trying to join the elite four here." Ash said.
"Really?" Diana asked.
"Daniel Rian made a deal with me. If I could win the pokemon league, he'll give me a recommendation for the elite four."
"Really, that's incredible. You could become a member of the elite four, and at such young age." Diana said.
Meanwhile Serena and Brock were with Eevee.
"Poor little guy, first he get separated from his mother, then he finds out that he may never see her again, and now he isn't able to learn anything on how to survive." Serena said as she petted him.
"I'm starting to think this whole idea isn't going to work out. This Eevee needs someone to look after him, while Diana had a point about him not having a very good life just living in an enclave under a city. I still think this little guy needs a proper mother." Brock said.
"You're right, but I suppose the others are just trying to help him." Serena said.
"The thing is though, he can absorb a lot of information at this age. But there's just no way he can master it this fast." Brock said.
"Plus next is battle training. I don't want this little guy getting hurt by one of Ash's pokemon." Serena said.
"Ash will probably tell them to take it easy on him." Brock said,
"Ash is good at training pokemon at most skill levels." Serena said.
"Maybe we're wrong maybe he'll do alright." Brock said.
"Yeah." Serena said as Eevee looked up at her.
A few minutes later Ash and Squirtle were standing in front of Eevee.
"Alright let's try some simple battling." Ash said.
Serena stood beside Eevee as he nervously looked at Squirtle.
"Squirtle you take it easy on this little guy." Serena said.
"Squir." Squirtle said nodding.
"And could you take off your shades, they're scaring him." Serena said.
"Squirtle." Squirtle said sweat dropping as he took off his black shades and put them in his shell.
"Alright let's start with one of the most useful tactics, dodging. Squirtle use water gun." Ash said.
"Alright Eevee, when he launches the attack move out of the way." Serena said.
"Eve." Eevee said nervously.
"Squir." Squirtle said as he let out a very small water gun.
"Now dodge it Eevee!" Serena shouted.
Eevee tried to run out of the Watergun's path, but tripped over himself and face planted before being hit by the small water gun and hurled back.
"Eevee!" Serena shouted as she ran over and helped him up.
"Are you ok?" Serena asked.
"Eevee." Eevee said sounding sad.
"Well that didn't turn out well." Ash said as he, Squirtle, and Pikachu sweat dropped.
"Eevee why don't you try attacking. Use Tackle with everything you've got." Serena said.
"Eevee!" Eevee shouted as he ran at Squirtle as fast as he could.
"Squirtle hold your ground." Ash said.
Squirtle held his chest up in a proud stance as Eevee tried to run up and tackle him.
Eevee smashed his head right into the center of Squirtle's shell. Squirtle wasn't moved an inch, but Eevee fell backwards and onto he ground.
"Eevee!" He shouted as the tackle caused him more pain than Squirtle.
"Squir" Squirtle said as he sweat dropped.
"Alright maybe we should some status moves. Use Growl." Serena said.
Eevee got up and tried growling.
"Eevee!" He shouted. Squirtle felt almost nothing and scratched his head.
"Try tail whip." Serena said.
Eevee tried smacking his tail against Squirtle, but after doing so a few times his tail got sore and he had to stop.
"I don't think this is working Ash." Serena said as she picked up Eevee.
"Nothing is working." Diana said.
"Why did we think we could train a baby Eevee to survive in the wild in just a few hours?" Lucy asked.
"I guess we just have no choice but to take him back to the guild and have the guardians there look after them." Diana said.
"No, I have another idea. I'll look after him." Serena said.
"What?" Lucy, Brock, and Diana said.
"I really like this little guy and he likes me. I would love to look after him." Serena said.
"Serena I know you've raised pokemon before. But this is a lot different. Eevee is much younger and raising a pokemon that age is much more difficult. They require a lot more care and a lot more attention. Are you sure your up to it?" Diana asked.
"I know it won't be easy, but I know I can do it. Besides I'm not alone, I've got Brock, Ash , Lucy, and all of our pokemon." Serena said.
"I'd be more than willing to help with everything I know about breeding." Brock said.
"I'm always there for you Serena." Ash said as he put his hand on her shoulder.
"I'll help too." Lucy said.
"Pika!" Pikachu said nodding.
"Well alright. I suppose that way he'd be able to go around all of Kanto and be raised instead of just sitting in an enclave." Diana said.
"Well Eevee, what do you think. Do you want to come with us?" Serena asked.
"Eevee!" He shouted smiling.
"Alright." Serena said as she took out a pokeball and gently touched it to his head. Eevee was sent inside and stayed there for a minute before the pokeball stopped flashing, revealing he was caught.
"Well good luck raising Eevee, I'm sure you'll do fine. It was good seeing you again Lucy , but now I need to get back to Dakota." Diana said.
"Alright it was good seeing you too." Lucy said. Serena let Eevee out of his pokeball and held him in his arms as the group packed up their stuff and continued down route 7.
"Hey Serena, I think I know why Eevee likes you so much." Ash said.
"Really." Serena said.
"I was a bit surprised at why he came so close to someone he hadn't met before. So I read his aura and found out why. Apparently he is drawn to you because of the caring nature that your aura emits." Ash said.
"What?" Serena said a bit confused.
"Every pokemon can feel the aura that people emit. Eevee, having been separated from his mother felt your aura and was drawn to you because he could tell how caring and loving you are. It's a sign that you're going to be a great mother someday." Ash said.
"Really." Serena said. She then turned back to Ash.
"Wait, are you asking me to be a mother." She said with a sly expression on her face.
"What?" Ash said as his face turned red and Pikachu laughed a little.
"Eevee!".

In case any of you are wondering Eevee is this stories equivalent to Togepi. Sorry if that disappoints you but I thought it better since Misty's not in the group.
Also some of you think from the last chapter that I hate the magikarp sales man, I don't, that whole thing was just to show how hardcore jessie and James are in this story.
Anyway the poll results are in and we have a clear winner, one tauros. I was personally on the other side but I don't care too much.
I will tell you know Serena's Eevee will evolve into it's cant only evelutions, but I won't say which.
