Chapter 38: The Cup of Life

Her friends waited for her on the outskirts of the Darkling woods. "Where is she?" Arthur broke the silence.

No one replied. They didn't need to, he knew where she was.

"We can't stay here all night." Gwaine stated. "If we get caught again, we might not be so lucky."

"Gwaine is right, sire." Gaius said to Arthur.

Merlin yawned. "And besides, it's late. We could all do with a good sleep!"

"Sefa and Eira have already found another cave, not to far from here." Morgana told them.

Merlin smiled weakly and walked in the direction Morgana pointed him in. Gaius said goodnight before he too, went to the cave, leaving Morgana and Arthur alone together.

He was leaning against a tree, facing Camelot with a look of dread on his face. "Arthur-"

"Morgana, don't." He cut her off.

"You didn't even know what I was going to say." She scoffed.

Arthur turned around, facing her. It was then he recognized her. Her hair wasn't matted and dirty anymore, her dress wasn't black and muddy. Instead, she looked just as she did all those years ago:

A natural, striking beauty with long black curly hair, milky skin and full lips. Her eyes were a beautiful bright green, but they could never replace Lyra's blue eyes that looked as if they'd fallen straight from the skies and into her skull.

His sister's beautiful dress of precious silk cascaded down her body in the most flattering fashion.

Arthur remembered when she used to wear dresses like that... deep, bold colours like emerald green, cobalt blue, royal purple and ruby red.

"What were you going to say, then?" He asked her.

Morgana smiled kindly. "Don't give up hope. We'll save her."

"You're not coming, Morgana. You'll stay here and look after Gaius and the girls." Arthur stated.

"But-."

Arthur cut her off. "Mordred will kill you for betraying him. And besides, I still don't trust you." He added.

Morgana sighed. "I was so naive, Arthur. I don't think I really understood what I was doing back then. But believe me, I have seen the evils in this world. And I know Mordred a lot better than you think. You don't know how much I regret everything that I've done! I just- I hope that you will forgive me."

And with that said, she walked off towards the cave. Leaving Arthur alone to mull it all over.

Lyra heard Mordred get up the next morning, but she didn't open her eyes.

She didn't want to talk to him, not anymore... He's ruined their friendship... That almost born relationship.

She heard him get dressed and opened her eyes as soon as she heard the door lock.

As slowly as she could, she stood. It hurt her, but she tried her best to ignore the pain.

The air was cold against her bare skin, so she put on the first dress she could find. It was a simple deep purple with a silver hem.

She felt so alone. Even Gaius was gone. She had a few friends here and there, but they couldn't help her.

Lyra sighed, as she braided her long dark hair. There was a knock on the door. "Come in."

"Milady?" It was sir Leon.

She smiled weakly. "Yes?"

"The King has asked me to escort you to the throne room, immediately." Lyra couldn't help but notice that he didn't look into her eyes while he spoke, as if he was guilty.

Lyra closed her eyes momentarily. "Why?"

"He told me not to tell you." He stated. "Forgive me."

She did. After all, she had known him all her life and as fa as she's concerned he was one of Arthur's best friends.

The hall doors opened. Mordred was sat on the throne. He was the only one in the room, apart from her.

Sir Leon had shut the door behind him as he left, leaving her alone with him.

There was something new. A golden chalice sat on the center of the round table in Arthur had put there the day he became king.

"What is that?" Lyra asked, being the first to brake the silence.

Mordred smirked. "The cup of life." He stated.

"What do you mean?"

"It's a magical chalice, blessed by many years of powerful sorcery." He stood up. "If water is drunk from it, the drinker will survive death."

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Magic always comes with a price, though. Even I know that."

Mordred nodded. "Indeed. Another life must be given in return in order for the balance of the world be restored."

"You're not planning to use it, are you...?" She knew it was a stupid question, but she didn't care.

He ignored her. "It has another use: it can give any person the gift of immortality."

Lyra's eyes widened. "What?"

"This can be done by placing a drop of a person's blood into the cup." Mordred explained.

Lyra backed away as she walked around the table, towards her. He stopped until he was less than a meter away. "When I find Arthur, it'll be his blood that I poor into that chalice... And I will find him, Lyra."

"As long as Merlin and Morgana are with him, he will be safe." Lyra hissed.

Mordred rolled his eyes. "You think I didn't know that?" He grinned at the look of confusion on her pale face. "I have spies, Lyra. And one of them is with your group of friends right now."

"No." She refused to believe it. "Who?"

Mordred smirked. "Wouldn't you love to know?"
