Tris pov
"They're from Erudite?" I ask.
"Yeah, it's one of our new inventions. They wrap around the closest artery or nerve. We're trying to find a way to use that for blocked arteries or nerve damage, the problem is we can't find a way to get them out without killing the host. Whoever did this, they either stole from Erudite or came from it. The only thing is, you can fill these with anything." He says.
"What?!"I say and place a hand on my stomach protectivly."What if she put some kind of poison?" Fear strikes me. This is a new fear that I've never felt before. It's a motherly fear. The fear of my child. Normally fear wakes me up, but this time is different. I faintly feel Tobias' arms around me as my legs go weak.
"Tris,"he says,"Tris, calm down." He places a hand over mine that rests on my stomach protectivly. "Think of the baby."
"That's-what-I'm-doing-"I gasp.
"Beatrice?" My dad asks as he grasps my hand. I don't say anything. I can't say anything. "We need to get her out of here and into fresh air. Away from the crowded room."
My vision is going vision when a blurry figure approaches.
"What's wrong with her?" Marcus asks.
"Nothing that pertains to you," Tobias says in his Four voice. I faintly feel him tensing. "So you should leave."
"Marcus,"my dad interjects,"maybe you should step back, people crowding her isn't the best for her or the child."
"Hmmm,"he says as though he's disappointed,"a grandchild I was not told about?"
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that, but that was their choice and right and it doesn't change anything," my dad says firmly.
I close my eyes and feel Tobias scoop me into his arms. That's when I black out.
When I open my eyes, I see a familiar single picture hung on the wall of my family. The only picture that we ever had of us, and the only thing on the wall. I'm at my parents house.
I can hear my dad talking to Tobias.
"-bble to hear. I'm sorry if I pried."
"It's okay, Andrew. Not many people are used to someone being hostile to Marcus."
"I suppose that's true. But you have every reason to be. Just know that you will make a great father. You are not a coward, Tobias. You are not like him. And if you ever need advice, Natalie and I are here for the two of you."
"Thank you."
It's surprising to hear my dad call him by his real name.
I move my hand to the firm bump under my shirt. I'm really starting to show. Especially with my tight shirt. The sound of me rolling over, gets the attention of Tobias and my father.
They both rise from their chairs and come to where I lay. Tobias crouches down in front of me. He places a hand on my cheek lovingly and asks,"how do you feel?" Etched into his face is worry.
"I feel exhausted. What happened?"I ask.
"You blacked out, love. I was so worried."
"Oh... is the baby okay?"
"The doctor came and checked you. He said that your blood pressure is a little high and that you need to relax more. He also took some blood to check for anything that could harm the baby."
I look to the bandage wrapped around my right elbow.
"He said you were in good enough condition to not have to be hospitalized. But you shouldn't do much walking for the rest of today. He said little to no walking, so your parents offered to let us stay here. I wanted to wait until you woke up to get some necessities from the apartment."
"Okay."
I sit up and have to steady myself. I feel really weak and dizzy. I can see why I shouldn't walk. I probably wouldn't be able to even stand and if I did I would probably walk into a wall.
My dad notices this and asks me,"are you okay, Beatrice?"
"Yeah, I just need a minute." I say.
Caleb walks into the room with Amelia, holding hands.
"You're awake,"he says with a smile.
"Yeah, I just woke up." I say.
"Where did Four go?"
"Back to the compound."
Anger crosses his features,"he would just leave you after you blacked out?"
"No, he went to get our things. We're staying here tonight. Four would never just leave me like you're thinking. And he waited for me to wake up."
"Oh, sorry, it was ignorant for me to jump to conclusions."
"Don't worry about it, many people don't understand him or know him as a loving guy, but he really is. He doesn't do things like that."
My dad offers us something to drink so I ask him for some water. Caleb and Amelia take a seat on the seats that my dad and Tobias were sitting in earlier. She leans into kiss him and that's when I notice a scar that she tried to cover with make up. It's on her jawline.
"I don't mean to be rude, but how did you get that?"I ask motioning to her scar.
"I was working on an experiment with my mom, when these people came and took it from us. I was only ten, and when they pushed me, I hit a piece of metal and it scarred me."
"I'm sorry,"I say.
"You have nothing to apologize for,"she says. I forget that Erudite don't like sympathy.
My dad returns with some water for me and takes a seat next to me. I take a sip of the water and it makes me feel so much better. I relax my hand on my stomach and ask them,"how long have you two known each other?"
"We met during initiation, since she has lived there all her life she helped me out and then we started spending a lot of time together. She was top of our class."
"What about you and Four?" She asks.
"He was our instructor and I guess it just kinda surprised us both. But it was one of the best surprises I could ever ask for."
"That's nice. You both seem really happy."
"We are. Especially with this one coming,"I say rubbing my hand on the small bump.
"So how many months are you?"
"3 and a half." I say.
"Wow, you're almost into your second trimester. That's when all of the changes happen, you start to grow more, by the end you'll be able to feel it move, your ankles will swell, and you might have some aches and pain in the back, groin, thighs, or abdomen."
"Oh, I didn't know that. We have our next appointment next week. I'm guessing they'll explain more then."
"Possibly."
The door opens and my mom walks in along with Tobias.
"Beatrice, I'm so happy to see you awake. How do you feel?" She asks.
"I'm still a little dizzy, but I'm feeling better."
"Keep drinking water, and hopefully the dizziness will pass,"my mom says," Four, follow me, I'll take you to her old room so you can set those bags down."
Tobias follows my mother upstairs to my old room. My father starts to talk to Caleb and Amelia, so I just relax into the cushions of the couch. I start to feel nauseous, so I close my eyes and focus on not feeling sick.
Finally I can't take it anymore, I stand up quickly, ignoring my dizziness and run to the bathroom. I hear footsteps behind me as I run. I make it to the toilet just in time to empty what I had in my stomach.
I feel big a hand on my back and one holding back my hair. I don't have to look to know who it is, I know those hands so well. When I'm done, I relax into Tobias and groan. He holds me as I cry.
I feel so awful right now. I'm sick, I'm dizzy, I feel weak.
He sits on the floor with me in his harms as I cry into his chest. I can hear him speaking to someone, but I'm not paying attention to what he's saying. His arms move up and down my back comfortingly.
He moves one hand under me and lifts me into the air, into his arms. I rest my head on his chest and look down the hall. I see my mom walking with a towel . She hands it to Tobias and he thanks her.
He sets me on the toilet and disappears for a second. He comes back with our bag and hands me my tooth brush and tooth paste. I brush my teeth as he draws a bath. He closes the door and helps me take off my shirt.
"I can do it myself,"I say.
"I know, but I just love taking it off of you."
I blush and allow him finish taking my clothes off and then he helps me into the warm bath. I sigh as the warm water relaxes my muscles. He gets out the shampoo and conditioner and starts to wash my hair as I wash my body.
After, he helps me up and helps me get dressed in comfortable clothes. He picks me up and carries me. "Tobias, you don't have to carry me everywhere."
"The doctor said no walking."
"Little to no walking."
"Well, you ran over here, so that can be your 'little' bit of walking."
I roll my eyes but don't say anything more. As we come into the living room, my mom calls for dinner. When we walk into the kitchen, well more of Tobias walking into the kitchen, I see that there are now six chairs at the table that always sat four.
My parents sit at each end of the table, Tobias sets me down in a chair at one side and sits next to me, Caleb and Amelia sit across from us.
As we all sat and talk in the dimly lighted room, I can't help but stare at Amelia. I know I've seen her at the meetings, but she also looks familiar in another way. But I can't place it.
"So Amelia, what's your last name?" I ask her.
"Matthews."
"As in Jeanine Matthews?"
"Yes, it's a common last name in Erudite." She looks a little uncomfortable. I look to Tobias who has switched to his Four mask. He's trying to hide something. He's not his usual Four self when he's with my family.
"What is your last name?" She asks.
Without thinking I say,"Eaton."
"As in Marcus Eaton?"
"Yes,"Tobias says.
"You must be Tobias then. I've read a lot of articles about your family." She says. "It's a little sad that-"
"Amelia,"Caleb says cutting her off.
She clears her throat and says,"excuse my comments, Tobias."
"You can call me, Four. That is my name now."
I reach for his hand under the table and squeeze it. He moves his hand to my bump, which seems to be his favorite thing to do lately. I move my hand to cover his. For a split second, his face changes to smile at me. But only for a second.
After dinner, I go to help my mom and dad clean up, but they shoo me away. So Tobias helps them. His Abnegation coming out. Soon Caleb and Amelia leave. My father speaks to Tobias so my mom comes over to sit next to me and asks me how I feel.
"I still feel sick."
"When I was pregnant with Caleb, my first trimester was terrible. I was sick every day!"
"It's only every once in a while that I feel sick, but when I do, it hits me for a while." I explain.
"I also always wanted cake, but that was something I've only had one time when I was little."
"Oh, really? Me too! But we have Dauntless cake. Except it made me sick earlier today."
"And your second trimester is usually easier because you aren't sick. But your ankles, fingers and face swell. And your back hurts. But as soon as you feel it move, you realize that it's all worth it."
"Oh, I can't wait for that. Especially since Tobias loves to put his hand on my stomach. He loves the baby so much already, and I do too."
My mom smiles at me and says,"that's good. Even though he is known as this scary instructor leader, I can see past his tough guy Four mask. Your dad and I really like him. He's a good guy, and a great husband."
"Thanks mom,"I say smiling.
Tobias and my dad walk in and take a seat. Tobias sits next to me and I lean into his arms. I close my eyes for a second and when I open them again, I'm being put in bed. I look around confused for a moment before I realize that I must have fell asleep. Tobias is stripping down and changing.
He gets into bed with me and pulls me into his arms.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you about Amelia,"I yawn,"I wanted to talk to you about her."
"Tomorrow, love. You're tired, I can tell."
"Okay,"I say and snuggle up to him.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Tris."
A/N wow this is a long chapter but I just couldn't stop writing!
