Tris pov
"If you want to live, you'll drop that gun." Amelia says.
I look into Caleb's cold eyes and I don't see my brother, I see a ruthless killer. What the hell has she done?
Tobias doesn't budge,"go ahead, shoot me."
"Better yet,"she says and points it at me. I see a mixture of fear, shock, defeat, and anger in Tobias' eyes as he drops the gun.
"That's what I thought,"she says and kicks his gun away. "Caleb, tie her up."
She points the gun back to Tobias and says,"if you move, he'll shoot her in the stomach."
I feel my breath leave me. She can shoot me, but not my baby. I watch as he swallows hard. I've never seen him so vulnerable in front of some one else besides in his fear landscape, with Marcus.
Caleb sits me in a chair, my arms pulled behind it in ties.
"You see, I've been testing this little experiment on Caleb." She smiles,"and it's working very well."
I look to Caleb and he just stares at me coldly.
"Caleb,"I whisper sadly.
"My mother had a plan. A plan that you ruined. She was going to rid the world divergent. Only her serum was flawed. Mine has no flaws. You see, I snuck into Dauntless and contaminated the cake, I shot special bullets at the suspected divergents, and the best part is, Caleb doesn't remember a thing."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, as soon as this wears off, he has no memory of what happened while he was under."
She walks over to the table and says,"now I am going to press a button that will put everything into action. Every Dauntless member who ate the cake, and is divergent will be administered death serum only reacted by divergents."
My heart stops, I ate some cake and I am divergent. Tobias' eyes widen in horror. "I was hoping you would eat the cake, and you confirmed my hopes when you were at your parents house."
I look down to my stomach where my baby grows. I've killed you already, I think to it. All she has to do is press one button, and we're dead. And Tobias! He would die too!
"Say goodbye, divergent!"She says.
"Goodbye,"Nikki says as she points a gun straight at her from behind. "Drop the gun."
Amelia raises her hands as if surrendering, and then as quick as I can blink, she fires the gun at me. I only see a flash of black in front of me and a grunt of pain. I hear another grunt as Nikki knocks Amelia out with the butt of her gun.
Tobias lays on the ground gripping his chest in pain. "Tobias!"I cry. Ross runs to me to let me lose of my restraints. As soon as I'm free, I drop to the ground next to Tobias.
I can feel the tears slipping from my eyes as I move my hands to his arm so I can get a good look at his wound. "Tobias, "I cry.
"I'm okay,"he groans.
Uriah and Zeke come in and help Ross and Will pick up Tobias carefully. Nikki and Marlene have Amelia and Caleb cuffed and are working on taking them to holding. I follow the boys to the hospital and wait for them to finish retrieving the bullet from his chest.
I wait in the room for half an hour until someone finally comes in and says,"Mrs. Eaton?"
I look to the nurse concerned. "Your husband is in surgery. Everything is going well, I'm sorry that we weren't able to tell you right away, but if we didn't get him to surgery he could have bled to death."
"But he's alright, right?" I ask.
"They are almost done and everything is going fine," The nurse says,"I also wanted to do a check on you, if that death serum plan is true, that means it is in your system and we should be giving you an antidote."
"Okay,"I nod.
She leads me to a room and does a simple blood test and administers an antidote into my bloodstream. She runs a quick ultrasound and says,"if you'd like, I can find out the gender?"
"I'm going to wait for my husband,"I say and she nods, understanding. After, I wait in the room for Tobias. There's a knock on the door and Nikki pokes her head in.
"Tris?"
"Hey Nikki,"I say as I wipe my tears.
She comes in and sits next to me. She's starting to show.
"What's wrong?"She asks.
"Tobias is in surgery."
"Oh,"she says sadly,"I'm sorry."
"It's okay, they said he was going to be fine."I say.
"Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that you're worried." She says.
I nod. That's when I notice a ring on her finger.
"What is this?"I ask as I grab her hand.
She smiles and says,"Ross proposed to me."
"That's so great,"I say and hug her.
"Thanks."
The door opens and a nurse rolls in Tobias on a bed. He is asleep. Nikki stands up and says,"I'll leave you, so you can be with your husband."
"Okay,"I say,"congratulations."
"Thank you,"she says with a smile.
The nurse explains his condition and then leaves us.
He wakes up after an hour. I don't even notice at first. I was busy looking at his hand which I had clasped in mine.
"Tris..."His voice his hoarse.
"Tobias, how do you feel?"I ask.
"My chest hurts,"he says.
"You did take a bullet,"I say.
"As long as you are safe, I don't care. I'll take a dozen bullets for you."
He looks at me and wipes a tear,"don't cry, baby. I'm okay."
"I'm sorry, my hormones are crazy, I can't help it."
He moves his hand to my stomach and smiles. I feel the baby start to kick at his hand. He gasps and says,"oh my God! I can feel it!"
"What?! You can?!" I ask excitedly.
"Hi, baby,"he says as he rubs my stomach,"I love you so much."
Tobias isn't a very emotional person, but I watch as a tear rolls down his face. He smiles brightly at me and says,"I love you both so much."
"Sometimes when I'm bored, I'll do this." I take his hand and poke the side of my stomach. He looks a little confused until he feels the baby kick his hand. Then I move his hand to another place and poke. When he feels it kick again he lets out a laugh which is cut off by a groan of pain.
"Does it kick often?"
"Lately it has been."
"It- I don't really like calling it that..."
"Do you want to find out the gender?"I ask him, hopeful that he'll say yes.
"Yeah, I'd like that." He says with a smile.
The nurse who checked me said she can find out the gender, but I wanted to wait for you."
"Okay, let's get that nurse in here."
"I'll be right back,"I say and kiss him softly.
I search for the nurse and come up empty handed, so I go to the front desk and ask for her. The nurse there sends me back to Tobias' room and says the nurse will be there with an ultrasound machine soon.
When I walk in, he is almost asleep.
The nurse comes in with the machine, which wakes him up.
"So, you guys want to know the gender of your baby?"She asks excitedly.
"Yes,"I say with a smile.
"Okay, well I'm assuming you know the drill?"
I nod, lay back, and pull my shirt up so she can put the gel on my stomach. It's cold, but that's expected. She turns the machine on and it lights up when she touches it to my stomach.
She moves it around looking for the baby. She quickly finds it and says,"wow, it's a good thing you want to know, because it's spread out in there. You're having a baby boy!"
Tears well in my eyes.
A boy.
