Married: Chapter 7 - The Mission Part 4
Shadow's eyes narrowed in suspicion before he walked back towards Rouge and pressed his ears against the door, trying to listen for sounds other than the guards having a small conversation about nonsense.
His artificial heart skipped a beat in fright once he heard footsteps coming to a stop right on the other side of this door.
"Stand back!" Shadow barked. Rouge took a few steps back.
His right hand gripped the gun tightly as he took a few steps back himself. He felt no pain as the small scratches the fence had caused before had already been healed. Although the numb throbbing from the gunshot in his shoulder was still present, making it's presence known with a pulsating feeling.
The handle of the door was pushed downward, but it didn't open. The leader was probably telling who knows what to his henchmen.
"Seek cover." Shadow told his wife, she was quick to listen and hid behind one of the crates. Her husband did the same while he still had the chance. Hiding behind a crate that was just one away from her.
He hadn't been down for even a second before a clicking sound was to be heard throughout the storage area, followed by a set of footsteps.
"Where are those two?" A voice wondered out loud. This wasn't the same voice we had heard when we got captured. This must be someone else besides the leader. A second-in-command perhaps?
"Agent Shadow, agent Rouge, show yourself!" The second-in-command ordered, expecting them to follow it. He huffed when that didn't happen.
"Get in here!" He ordered his subordinates. They followed his command quickly and joined him into the storage.
Rouge gripped her gun tighter. She didn't know what expect next. She looked over at the hedgehog for guidance, but she could see that he was at a loss aswell. Their only option was to somehow fight them off, even though they were greatly outnumbered. Unless either one of the two found a less obvious option.
"If they won't come out of their hiding on their own, we'll force them out." The Second-in-command said and took a step back to give the other thugs the room they needed to fire.
Shadow cringed upon hearing gunshot after gunshot while Rouge released a startled yell.
"You idiots! Stop firing!" Came the voice of the leader, stopping them from emptying their guns on the crates without even having a real idea where the two intruders were.
The hedgehog looked over to his partner. She nodded at him, reassuring him that she was just fine. Shadow felt reliefed at that.
"Why the hell did you think that it was such a great idea to start firing at our goods?! Don't forget that our clients pay us alot of money for them!" The leader said, demanding an explanation from them.
It was the Second-in-command who spoke again.
"Sir, our technician has taken a look at our computer and noticed that all the files concerning the military base, G.U.N, are gone. Even the files on the back-up are missing." He said.
Their chief didn't like the sound of that.
"Of course. Why else would G.U.N send their top agents after us?" He paused, contemplating why he hadn't thought of that before.
"Why do this the hard way when it can be done the easy way." He suggested with a smirk, one that had gone unnoticed by his adversaries.
He walked backwards out of the room and his subordinates followed.
"Are you really going to do this? But our clients-"
"Our clients can wait a little longer! If these two get away with G.U.N's information, we will be defenseless against them if they decide to attack. And if I need to scrape their remains from the walls to get that usb-stick back, than so be it!" The chief snapped at him. He didn't care what happened to their loot, aslong as those two military agents didn't get away.
Rouge looked over at her husband, clearly unnerved at the fact that they obviously had something in mind for the two of them.
Shadow went to his knees and carefully looked over the crate, finding that the room was indeed empty. He went back down and looked back at her.
"Don't worry, we'll get out of here." He told her.
A hand was unconciously placed on his left shoulder. That was the downside of having the power to control Chaos Energy. It was a bit difficult to use the ability, Chaos Control, when he got hurt. The pain distracted him and rendered him unable to get a clear destination in mind, making him at risk for ending up in, for example, a wall or even the ceiling.
Shadow wouldn't mind it so much if it was just him, it would be easy to get himself free, but having someone else with him was a entirely different story. He wouldn't want something like that to happen to Rouge.
If there wasn't such a risk, he would've Chaos Controlled them out of here as soon as they got caught.
"Shadow? Do you hear that?" Rouge asked with a soft voice as a sound broke the silence.
It sounded like beeping.
"Get down!" Shadow yelled before throwing himself at his wife and protecting her from an incoming, deafening explosion.
Rouge covered her ears as it kept ringing in her ears. Shadow got back up groaning.
They were in luck. Neither one of them got hurt by the explosion.
"Come on, we need to get out of here now! I am certain there is more where that came from." The hedgehog said and helped the bat up on her feet.
Fire had surrounded them. Crates and their contents had been thrown all over the storage area from the impact. Even a whole stack had been blown away. Maybe that was for the best, because Shadow had noticed something that wasn't there before.
"There! We can get out through the window!" He said and pointed at the one window that hadn't been overly boarded up.
There was a row of windows near the ceiling with a platform underneath them, but they had all been board up. Seemed like they had forgotten to board one up. Shadow would've never noticed it if that stack hadn't been blown up.
The sound of beeping came once more.
Knowing that they had no more time left, Rouge took her partner's hand and flew them over to their only, and quickest, escape route.
But she wasn't fast enough.
The second explosion came, knocking the hedgehog with his ribs against the platform, he barely had the time to hang on to prevent himself from falling. The impact of the explosion send the bat flying out through the window, the shock making her unable to use her wings and sended her plummeting to the ground below.
She landed quickly and hard.
The last thing she heard before slipping into unconciousness was a desperate call from her husband.
